Ok just spent the last 20 mins catching up on all the drama..

Well what can I say, its left me feeling a little confused.

Yes the first day I came to these forums I said Hi < to meet you all :) >
then asked about what makes a good adventure game,

The rest of my posts have been mainly art advice and trying to get to know you all.

Now I am really new to the world of adventure games having played only one, Little Johnny Evil, but I loved it, and it made me want to find out more about them, how they work, what makes them so god damn fun.

I ended up here.

I have learnt so much in my first week, from never playing adventure games, never drawing, I have after one week have my first character well on the way to being finished < thanks to alot of help from DM>.
My first background drawn in rough. And many great web links and sites for me to use.

but I ramble,
Have I been asking for too much help? i never intended to upset anyone and I am sorry if my many posts in my first week has done this <have posted 10 times this week>, i was just really happy to find such a great place, and am very keen to learn from you all.

So if theres any advice, tips, rules for all us newbies why not post them here, so we dont make any more mistakes :(

I also hope if i have been over posting <not sure whats over posting or not> someone would tell me.

thanks for reading this, and sorry its so long.

chris

<note> my first game should be finsihed at the end of 2005 at the speed I draw  ;)

no, not at all... i liked the idea of someone 30years trying to start on games....:p I can only advice you to always look in the helpfile of ags, before you post! ;)

PS: You can mail me at peter@w8ff.com about the game you wanna make, and I would like to help you with it... backgrounds objects etc... scripting ;)

Ginny

youv'e played one game? *fills with envy*
You get to experience them all from the start, ah...
Don't use walkthroughs! They ruin the game, instead, use hints only when absolutely neccessary ( www.uhs-hints.com ) or ask in the Hints and Tips forum.

"well since you're a begginer, why don't you practise the first step? Blo..I mean, Play!"
lol, sorry, random quote came up, anyway, I'm still not quite sure what games to reccomend, in commercial games the easiest was syberia, but then again the puzzles are mostly mechanical so I dunno. The Longest Journey (TLJ) might be a good start but maybe a little later on. As for amteur games, just go here.
All games made in AGS, sorted into categories.

As for making, all I can say is start with a story, then when it's complete think of polished, after that it might be a food idea to expand your story to full detail, then work out a scene by scene layout (you can sketch each scene or just describe it) and at the same time detail out the puzzles.

Oh and read articles! Articles are fun to read, imforming and just plain useful! ;)

Tutorials are also very useful. There's a list of tutorials in the tutorial thread in the critic's lounge. :)

Are you completely new to Adventure games? I mean entirely, know nothing about them?

As for being a newbie here, just be yourself and don't imsult anyone, that's all really. :)

Misterx, I don't think any of the oldies has any gripes with you.

From what I've seen, you don't post like a madman.

I only encourage you to keep working on your game, make it something special and playable (not just one room, but something bigger).

Could you tell us more about your game? Have you developed your idea about Room number 5?
I saw the drawing of the main character (I think he's the main character, though I could be wrong), and it looks great!

edit: And of course you've done nothing wrong. No mistakes to learn from lol.

I think that its posts like misterx's that earn them respect. I already respect you.

When i first started i drew a character walk cycle. I thought it was pretty good, but then i realised it wasnt that good, so i changed it. Its pretty good now. I then made a couple of rooms and made a small game with like no puzzles. I then left it for ages. I came back and decided to scrap that and work on a new game, which is still in development...

Get some tutorials, and practice. It works, i've been doodling a lot at school, and i gotta say that my drawing skills have increased dramatically.

In my opinion, you're off to a great start!  But then again, like me, you're almost twice the age of most of the members of this forum :) So I don't think the complaints were leveled at you.

I don't think the 'vets' on these boards mind posting about games/productions/tech ?s ... I think the drama is more pointed towards those that post random meaningless crap just to up their post count so they're no longer considered 'newbs'... that's all.

I feel like I've been posting here forever and I have only 157 posts.  I tend to bump heads with some of the vets but I respect the seniority and I don't start threads for no reason.

Stick with what you've been doing ... I see nothing wrong with it!

And please keep me posted on your game.  I'd really like to see my name in the credits of a completed game :)  Even if in just the small part that I helped!!

Welcome misterx,

One of the better introductions we get, especially considering the times,
I just checked your character in the critics lounge too, and I love it, what makes it more outstanding is it's your first character.

Hope you enjoy the ride.

Im sorry, i just do not understand you. I am here for a week orso, and have 160 posts. In my eyes that is an average posting count, and I have done maybee a few wrong posting without knowing, like posting in wrong forum etc... but don't just call me there a newbie... loser... or whatever!

AGA

No no no no!!!! I've been an AGS member for almost 2 years now and I have 578 posts. 150+ posts in a week is an insane amount. What the hell do you find to post about?!

Gilbert

I agree with AGA, let's say the top 15 posters:

http://www.agsforums.com/yabb/index.php?board=;action=mltop
You'll see that even the top poster (Pumaman... who can that be?) had only made ~2500 posts or so, it looks like a large number, but compare the length of his existence here to one week, you'll see that 150 post in a week is probably too much.

Actually we want quality of posts not quantity. It's not a race as if to win something by posting many, but how you post and gain others' respect in this community.

Moreover, Pumaman paid for web space and the bandwidth of these forums, so we shall just behave if we're just going to post something that doesn't lead to anywhere.

Privateer Puddin'

yeh, stop bloody posting so much :/

Minimi

ohw im sorry... oop i did it again, but i just can't figure out why you shouldnt post in a forum where you should be posting? ???

im not posting messages like

"yes"

"ok tnx"

"blablabliebloebla"

Im posting normal messages and im here to help others... just check the forum, I always try to help others as it should be as a member of the forum... so stop wining, then I will try posting lesser... to not overflow the bandwith of pumaman, where you ofcourse have made a good point.

So my apologizes for too much in your eyes posting, I'll post lesser in coming time.. k?

DGMacphee

Minimi,

As much as I should encourage people making competitions, AGS Pacman games, and making 160 posts per week, it would be preferable if you released an actual adventure game before doing anything else.

Finish 'Undeniable' before anything else, cause that's what I (and I'm hoping a lot of others) am waiting for.

well.. then you can wait a long time, cause I just finished 1 character and 1 scene ... and the demo is going to have 3 scenes at least... and the full game over 20... and being busy with only one game... is making me sick, cause i have alot of ideas... and im still as a matter of fact new to the AGS, so im practising with "shitty" games like Sam&Moos and also 2 another 1 room 3d rendered games comin up... got the point?

another question, what games did you release??

Scummbuddy

This is copied from the Ol' Yufster Hate Thread

I lurked for 2 months trying to get a feel for the place, then posted minimally.

Then made my original 4-room Dark Hero demo, then Ultimerr, and posted a little more.

Then Stickmen, then started MAGS, then wrote articles, then AGS Academy, etc, etc, etc.

And working on the final Dark Hero release now.

Minimi, don't take my previous post as a something harsh -- I only meant it as something to focus you.

I know what it's like to have many ideas -- but the sad thing about having too many ideas is it takes away from your main idea.
