Come on, the rest of you.  Don't be shy.

I work at Publix, an East Southern chain of Grocery stores. I am currently a bagger, but not really. I'm just not an official cashier for a few more weeks. I've been working at this job for over two years, and while the pay isn't the best, they work around my schedule. And whether I'm at college or home, I have a job. The hours, during the summer when I'm the available anytime, are long and can range from morning to night (anyone who has worked retail knows how this is), and I don't have a weekend to speak of. I enjoy the job, though. They've treated me well, given me regular raises, and it's a fun atmosphere to work in (no matter which store I'm in).

So I am currently happy with my job, it's something I might consider doing long term, if my Computer Science degree doesn't pay off...or I don't win the lotto.

I work For a small company called Digital Mastering Solutions (DMS) we just changed names from APS (Australian Production Services) I tried to get the 'P' changed to a 'G' but we don't sell goats.

I'm the Production Manager, which sounds better than it is really, but it's a good job, I never think, shit, I don't want to go to work today. But it's also contract work so I work when there's work available.

It's a wicked setup though with some very nice and expensive equipment.

We Transfer LP's (33.3, 45, 78) Cassettes (normal & mini) reel to reel (not often) to CD

Mainly peoples personal collections of records they want converted for themselves only (totally legal, no copyright infringement, as you are allowed to make personal copies of your own music etc as long as you don't lend, sell, public broadcast etc)

Video to DVD

Mainly Weddings, Birthdays (kids, 21st, 50th etc) occasionally porn

Convert NTSC to PAL, PAL to NTSC

All sorts of other digital stuff, with slides, photo's etc but not as much of that.

I also start work at 10am to avoid the main peak hour, and finish at 6pm to avoid the other peak hour (there's still usually a fair bit of traffic but it saves me about 15-20 mins in travel time each way than if I worked 9-5)

So there's a bit of detail,

So, Robert Eric, I guess you must be an unemployed bum seeing as you asked the question, then can't even say what you do. Come on confess what you do, it can't be all that bad, maybe you just want ideas for what jobs you could do, which is also a good idea. Shit, your probably a Doctor, Lawyer or Pornstar?

Hobbes

I'm a teacher. Working full time with a group of 10-year-old kids. And right now it's the summer break... that explains my free time. :)

Synthetique

I work in a terminal storage facility.. or you might call it "taking care of old people at the hospital".

Timosity, that sounds like the coolest job ever in the world!!!

Actually, as it happens, I'm a student looking for a "placement" job for my sandwich degree. I'm a computing student, so they want us all to get desperatly dull database management jobs.

PLEASE tell me DMS needs a database managed! In fact, the uni pretty much lets us do anything, as long as we can demonstrate that it's connected to at least 1 module of our horrible course. And since one of those modules was "Computer Systems Architecture" I could just about squeeze a job that simply involves understanding how a computer works...

I've been applying for jobs in the games industry for monthes now, but I don't have any contacts, and people are pretty mean when it comes to replying to CV's these days...

WAHH! SOMEONE TELL ME THEY NEED A COMPUTER STUDENT FOR A YEAR! I JUST DON'T WANT TO END UP MANAGING THE DATABASE OF A COMPANY IN WHICH I HAVE NO INTEREST AT ALL!

*sob sob sob sob sob*

Also, I have tonsilitus at the moment, so I could do with the cheering up!

I juggle on the Victoria Inner Harbour.

This fall I'll be doing research assistance and TA work in a Sociology Masters program, but for the summer, I'm doing shows.

I do approximately one 45 minute show a day (the rest of the time is recovering from that last show/practicing for the next), in a field with around 9 other performers, almost all of which have years more experience ~ more skill.  My call to personal pride is that my act is original--I don't steal any actual material (most other acts are actually stock material with the juggler's own personality thrown in--believe it or not, in our biz, a 9 foot unicycle finale or an escape from plastic wrap are cliche).

My act consists of comedy and juggling (lots of difficult tricks) with (yes), fire, knives, clubs, etc.  For my finale I wobble  on a walking globe, spin 2 devil sticks (1 of which is on fire) with a penguin standing on my head.  I won't be getting into finances, but a performer out here of moderate to high skill (Performance skill--not stage performance, becasuse a street audience is completely different from a stage audience, and not juggling skill, because only certain simple skills impress an audience) can make anywhere from 10$ a show to 300$ or even 500$.  First yearers are lucky to get one day show at about $25.  After a year or so, 45-65 is not uncommon, and after that, people try to break the 100 mark with constant honing and practice.

Next year I should be doing my "easy bake oven" act.  ;)

(BTW, to any west-coast Canadians, I offer a vactation to Victoria.  The acts here are of a world-class standing, next to places like San Fransisco.  For those in Finland, I suggest you check out Ville Wallo or Macksim Komaru (spelled wrong).  They will blow your mind.)

eVOLVE

Games Journalist... basically I write news, reviews, previews (mainly for PS2 games) of all the latest stuff, sometimes getting to go around the place to various games developers etc. (most recently I was invited to the Sony Computer Entertainment Europe HQ for an online trial of a new game, damn they know how to treat people well)... plus I get to go all expenses paid to events like ECTS and E3...

Also, I'm doing paid voice acting work whenever I can... also I'm creating cinematics and writing the screenplay for an upcoming 3rd person action game.. kind of a sci fi Resident Evil, but based a lot more on instant action.

And that's my lot...

Timosity,

What software / hardware do you use for your "Video to DVD" work?

What do you do your standards conversion with?

Matt

Layabout

I do pizza. thats about it...
I am Jean-Pierre.

Dave Gilbert

I work as a production coordinator for a denim manufacturer.  Our company makes jeans for various brands like Jordache, Polo and Mudd (Mudd being the account that I handle).  The company has started a few brands as well.  In the fall we're launching a "Jackie Chan" brand.  Seriously!  :-)

I'm basically a "liaison" between the factory and the client (in this case, Mudd Jeans).  So everyone yells at me with their problems and I have to figure out how to solve them.  My five-year plan is to avoid developing an ulcer.

I used to work for CNN and hated every minute of it.  Media careers ain't as glamourous as they sound.

Gonchi

I don't do squat. I write a lot, but chances of actually publishing anything are slim at best. I'm a decent artist but also, quite hard to make a living out of that. I have a few interests but nothing I could make an income out off... holy sh!t... I'm going to be a bum!  :o :(

I haven't personally done much of the physical stuff for the video section (I mainly do the music), but we use a capture card (not sure what brand) Adobe Premiere 6 to capture the video, and DVDit to build the DVD.

We have pentium4 2-3GB machines some running win2000, someXP, but it's just a side project for my boss really, cause we specialise in music

I wouldn't mind learning more about the section, I've dabbled with it, but my main job is recording, the music and removing the extra noise.

Does your work convert video to dvd too? What H/W S/W do you use.

I've also done some freelance web design

Captain Mostly:  We're a pretty small company, at the moment, It's just My boss and I working, occasionally we've had other employees, It means I have to work pretty damn hard to keep up with annoying clients.

The companies only a couple of years old, and has grown, but there's something lacking in it developing further at great knots, and it's to do with my boss trying too hard to make it grow too fast, then getting too bogged down in work to keep all the clients happy at once.

It's also to do with money too a degree, cause I don't think he's made a profit yet, and he's still gotta pay wages, rent (I don't know how much it is, but the location is in view of Sydney Harbour), and I'm about to ask him for more money.

We have three networks running, and My boss set it up, about 32 workstations.

I'll see how we develope over the next year or so, then start getting AGSers to come out on working visas, so we can take over the company.

I like my job but I wish it was more stable, we just need to get more famous, cause there aren't many companies round the world that do some of what we do, on the music side, there is a company in New York that does something similar, but to get the quality we get, there is no competition.

We are not trying to get global recognition, just locally mainly and throughout Australia, My boss is a rich bastard from a wealthy background, who used to be a DJ on a few Famous Sydney radio stations, he also does voice overs for a cinema advertising company, We've got some good plugs through his contacts in radio, but still advertising costs a fortune.

Ahhh, If I had his money, I would start recruiting AGSers to form a company that would take on and conquer the Adventure gaming world, it might stop CJ from importing and exporting drugs to support himself developing AGS

The company I work for is based within a recording studio, so we also deal with music including pure and faux 5.1 audio.

In terms of kit, we encode video from a Sony hardware encoder, or a Sonic hardware encoder, and encode audio on dolby and dts boxes.

Software for graphics is the usual Photoshop / Illustrator / After Effects setup with Sonic Creator, Scenarist and Spruce authoring systems.

When it comes to PAL / NTSC conversion we normally got out of house to a facilities house for Alchemist standards conversion.  90% of the work is done on digi-beta, with a little bit on miniDV (which we normally bump to digi).

Nice to bump into someone in a similiar industry   :)
