Heh, maybe.
I think he'd probably be as good as any of the other candidates. I don't think anybody can fix California. :)

Honestly, novelty value aside, I'd be REALLY wary of electing Arnold to run our state.

Half of me says, "Go for it, he can't be half as bad as some of the other guys, notably Gray Davis."  The other half reads the interviews and shakes its head as it senses massive stupidity.  Hell, I might vote for him just to avoid voting for some of these other assholes.

Las Naranjas

Well, unlike many candidates, when an actor applies you can be more sure that he'll just be a figure to the advisers who'll really run the state.
With the other options, you get the feeling they might be tempted to actually try to do some governing themselves, and that could be tragic.

Excellent point, Las..  Davis (our current gov) is an excellent example.  He walks into an office for a state that is currently in the black a good 8 billion dollars.  After a couple months he thinks to himself, "Hey, I ought to get off my ass and do something with that extra cash.  I know!  We'll spend it like crazy."  Currently, California's in the red for about 50 billion.  I know that anyone can be corrupted and anyone (even those who seem remotely honest) can be misanthropic. However, I think I might trust Arny to be the lesser of two evils in this case.  At least we know he'll be a figure-head and a dumb-$h!t.  We don't have to worry about massive business opportunities for the governor in the guise of legislation.

Of course, this topic'll die out fast due to its limited facets and the fact that only 2 out of X # of AGS'ers are actually affected by the result of the vote.

Nacho

You´re surprised about Arnold? There is a porno actress (Called Mary Carey or something like that) who is also candidate. Arnold rules, but man, if I were californian... I would vote Mary!
Are you guys ready? Let' s roll!

I have no idea who the hell I'm going to vote for.  This whole thing is a friggin joke.  I'll probably go with Camejo (Green Party) who wouldn't have a chance in a normal election but who just may with this ludicrous surplus of candidates.  Anyway, that's pretty much all I have to say about that.  I think Yak's right; this topic doesn't have too much life left in it.

actually, I think this election also effects the entire political scene...at least in america. A recall is forming in Pittsburg, and I think one other city. If Arnie wins this, other arrogant actors with no political experiance will try and run too. I think he'll prob. win, but I'd rather see the state's lutenant gov. win.

arnold reminds me a bit of my least favorite american president: ronald regan

Archangel (aka SoupDragon)

Arnie isn't an idiot, and he does have charisma and a self-power. What else do you need in a governor? I mean, a sensible, intelligent, wise, good man would be nice, but the problem is that most wise people are wise enough to not go into politics. So I think Arnie would make a decent governor, as long as he had some good people behind him who could help pull California out of its huge debt.

m0ds

I say go Arnold. Even if he doesn't win this time over, he'll be back.

it would be great to see Arnie get it, but like  panda the thought of an actor in power worries me, FFS when
ronald regan was in the white house, i was sure he was the one who'd kill us all! i live in the UK so i guess we just saw what we wanted to see, but Ronnie came across as a puppet with a "bomb the bastards" attitude, the real ppl in power stuck their hand up is ass controlling him and using him as target pratice!

Isn't there a democrat available in California?

Arnold would a *bad* idea, in my opinion. This is from my strictly liberal point of view. Arnold is a republican, and in his interviews he has already shown he's not the most tolerable person around.

Personally, for me, the fact that he's against same-sex couples marrying, ruins it for me. So much for enlightenment, Ahnuld!

DGMacphee

He has Rob Lowe as his campagin advisor.

I think Arnie's been watching too much West Wing.

Hobbes: Yes, there is Cruz Bustamante.  He would be my second (and probably more practical) choice after Camejo.

Arnold's not as right-wing as some Republicans, but in California you have to be pretty damn moderate to have a good chance as a Republican.  I wasn't aware of his stance on same-sex marriages until now, but that certainly lowers my opinion of him a bit more (not that I would vote for him in the first place).  It's going to be hard for him to push that kind of conservative social agenda in this state.

No, of course not.  He only just got into politics.  He has absolutely no experience in public service.  All he's done is make wildly successful films, which certainly aren't box office hits for their brilliant scripts.  He's had no opportunity to ruin himself so far.  I'm not saying he ISN'T going to last or anything, but you can hardly say he's succeeded right now.

I have no trouble with actors becoming political figures, but it's an uphill battle for them to be taken seriously.  The only one I feel to have pulled it off successfully is Sonny Bono.  He had been out of the spotlight for awhile so people didn't associate him with his entertainment career too much, and he even asked a TV network to take "Sonny and Cher" reruns off the air.  Arnie is running for governor right after the release of Terminator 3.  If he was serious about running, he would wait a few years, stay out of the entertainment spotlight, and distance himself from it entirely.  Saying "I'll be back!" to reporters isn't the way to do it.

Matt Brown

#30
personally, I'd take him more seirously if he didnt jump right into this, having no experenance whatsoever. If he was really serious about a job in public service, maybe he ought to join a political think tank, or run a  smaller town in california or something first. being gov...even more so in a very populated and powerful state, is a big job, and I dont think he's ready
word up

remixor

I agree Panda (and DG).  It seems pretty arrogant of Schwarzanegger to expect people to take him seriously when he has no history of public service whatsoever.  It's not even so much that he's an actor for me as it is that "being an actor" is just about his only qualification.  I'm sure he's reasonably intelligent, but in terms of politics, he's no different than anyone else running for the goverornship.  If he wasn't already famous, he wouldn't have a chance, because he hasn't demonstrated any degree of political prowess or even experience.

Also, I'd like to say something about the state's general state (ha) of affairs.  There are a ton of candidates running, but people are honestly making too big of a deal about that.  Yes, there are a stupid amount of people on the ballot, but it really doesn't matter because most of those people are not at all serious contenders.  The real problems with California (of which there are plenty) have nothing to do with, for example, Larry Flynt running.  The only actual big candidate with a chance of winning who doesn't really make sense is Arnold.
Writer, Idle Thumbs!! - "We're probably all about video games!"

DGMacphee

I especially wonder about Arnie's position ethically when you consider the recent allegations and older footage (i.e. the orgies, the drugs, the racial comments about South Africa).

Flynt I can understand running as Flynt has been responsible for some liberal press freedoms in the US.

I don't care about his porn factory -- I care that people can't sue for libel or defamation when others are critical (or more so satrical in Flynt's case) in the US.

If only Australia would adopt the same law.

In any case, if I was Californian, I'd vote Flynt!

Well, Flynt's platform includes rather questionable goals like keeping all the illegal immigrants we have and then bulking up California's borders to keep out all the rest of them.  This certainly doesn't actually take a stand on the issue, and it doesn't address all the illegal immigrants who commute daily, without whom California's agriculture industry would be severely impacted.  When asked about the education problems, he said (quote) "Whatever the education problems are, we have to fix 'em."  And generating state revenue from slot machines would certainly bring in money, but it seems a rather shaky economic plan to balance our deficit.

I don't even know anymore.  This whole state is going to hell :P

Not meaning to floss a dead horse here but for those interested, we received our ballots recently.

The list of candidates is 135 names long!  Lotsa choices here.  ;)

And the notice given to Governor Gray Davis listing the reasons for the recall election is as follows:

"Gross mismanagement of California Finances by overspending taxpayers' money, threatening public safety by cutting funds to local governments, failing to account for the exorbitant cost of the energy fiasco, and failing in general to deal with the state's major problems until they get to the crisis stage. California should not have to be known as the state with poor schools, traffic jams, outrageous utility bills, and huge debts....all caused by gross mismanagement."

I have to agree with the poor school system statement as the above quote has a couple grammatical errors.   ;D

anyway, I know this doesn't affect many of you (unless it sets a precident for other US states) but it is an interesting situation and an amusing one at that.

TheYak

Ok, it was almost a joke at the time but now it would appear that Arnold is our governor (for all 3 of us Californians in AGS)...  crazy shit...  He won with 51% of the vote.  At least it wasn't a situation where a candidate won with 15% of the vote (as was stated to be possible in this election between 135 candidates).

I have to say that I knew from the beginning he was going to win.  It was scary, but obvious.

Maybe ... just maybe this could be a good thing??

I try to find a bright side to any situation so let's look at it this way.

If there were 135 names on the list, and Arnold got 51% of the vote ... well ... unless he cheated somehow, that's a majority of the people behind him.

So if he can use his name/popularity to get that 51% spurred into action to actually be productive it could possibly be a good thing.

Of couse ... that 51% could be all the beach bum/body builders who don't have a clue what an election is and said "Whoa dude, Ah'nold is scopin' politics and I can vote for him??  That's bodacious dude!"

Time will tell ...

I wish him (and California) good luck!

cheers,

The 51% was of those who wanted a recall. There were more people who wanted to keep Davis than those who wanted Arnold. But at the same time there were more people who wanted Davis out than those who wanted to keep him. Tricky, huh?

Deficit under Gray Davis: $34.6 million

Question.  According to my ex-califronian sister, the deficit was caused because Davis was promised around $30 million in aid from the government. So he spent all that money, true, but he also expected the state would get that money back.  Is this true?   If so, the most Davis could be blamed for is trusting in his own government.

Dudes.

Bill Clinton was great. His woman-chasing antics did not affect the way he governed America. You had 8 years of tranquility. He was a bloody good President. Bush is a two-faced lizard-president, according to popular conspiracy theorists. But seriously, I don't trust that man as far as I could throw Manhatten.

As for Arnie, well maybe he gropes women. Maybe he did drugs or whatever Arnie does in his spare time. But is that going to stop him from governing California properly? Is he going to be too busy with breasts to sign in new whatever-it-is-he-needs-to-sign-ins? Is he going to have too few hands to fondle AND work at the same time? Is he going to have too little time to govern while he gropes? Will his one-time-steroid-enhanced muscles fit into the arms of his good business jacket???

I know these people should set good examples and crap, but it really isn't going to make them a better or worse governer. In fact, I think it's a pretty good thing you have a Governer that knows about the bees and the birds, because it's going to make him all the wiser as a governing-dude.

Arnie may not be the best choice, but time will tell whether he's a better Governer than he is Actor. And you'd better hope he is.

Dave Gilbert

Clinton was a Harvard Law school graduate and Rhodes scholar.  Arnie is a former bodybuilder turned movie star.  It's impossible to compare the two.

At least Sonny Bono and Ronald Regan spent a chunk of time out of the spotlight, studying politics and law, before running for government office.

Everybody knows it's actually Maria who's running California now. And she is using this as an opportunity to get her kids to run for president.

Seriously, uh, does he remind anybody else of Duke Nukem!?

We've had an actor for President (Ronald Reagan), a wrestler for governor of Minnesota (Jesse "The Body" Ventura), an actor/singer in Congress (Sonny Bono), now deceased and an actor for mayor somewhere in California, i think. (Clint Eastwood)

Arnold for Governor didn't surprise me at all, and probably couldn't do any worse than their last Governor. I just hope he has some extra time to make more movies. (Total Recall is my fav.)

oh, by the way, Howard Stern was going to run for Governor of New York but dropped out of the race.

In Australia (and soon PNG) it's impossible for someone to get elected without over 50% of the vote, this being achieved by preferences.

Instead of voting for one person on the ballot you number them in order of preference.

So if no-one gets over 50% with No. 1's, they take the parties and candidates with the fewest votes and use their preferences, and then the next smallest etc. until they find a candidate which is prefered by over 50% of the population.

If such a system was in the US, I can see alot of relieved Greens voters, because the debate between principals and a lesser evil would be gone. THe primary vote can go to the Greens and preferences can be directed towards the Democrats.

And hey, you wouldn't end up with Dubya or possibly Arnie.

I agree that Arnold wasn't the best choice. Save his financial conservatism, he's pretty much a flat-out liberal. McClintock was the only real conservative in the race, really. But I suppose that Arnold still is financially conservative, and at this point, that's the most important thing.
And, as for that Australian voting system, to be honest, it would kind of worry me to have that kind of system. The Green party always made me a little uneasy. But I suppose that was because I, along with a lot of my friends, grew up in what was pretty much poverty, since environmentalists ruined my hometown's main (and pretty much only) job supplier, logging, to save a couple of spotted owls. I always thought that a lot of environmentalists had their priorities a bit mixed up, IMO.

Las Naranjas

I think the preferential voting is more Democratic, but I guess some would rather it more Republican.

BA DUM CHING!

Just on other things in Australian democracy. As part of a civics course in Yr 5 we had to write definitions for various things. One was the secret ballot, I looked to Encarta 95 and it directed me to "Australian Ballot". Like the Australian Crawl, a term that I never heard until it came from an American source.

And as a point of interest, when, in 1894 South Australia became the third place after New Zealand and (ironically) the isle of Man, to grant female suffrage, it was something that was brought about by evangelical christians more than any other segment of society (bar women of course). There's a simple reason for that, which I won't give because I don't feel like it, but it jars with the general impression of evangelical christianity being very socially conservative.

As far as the rest of the world see's California, we only really know about Hollywood, which is what? a Suburb, or City within LA. I guess there's SF too, but anywhere else is just not really well known.

People in California must look up to TV/Media too much eg. they think are as cool as the kids from 90210 or something, therefore voting for people that look sophisticated (but aren't) rather than someone who might actually help them, not just their own careers.
I think the world in general is falling into the same traps.

It seems as though it was inevitable from the start, I feel sorry for the state, I guess it's society's own fault though, falling for the publicity stunts, and voting for a Moofie Star. wonder what will happen after the Novelty wears off.

It's a bit of a laughing joke over here in Australia (as it probably is in America and rest of world), but we're far enough away to laugh.

I guess Arnie just married into American political royalty and his motive has always been to rule the world, well I guess Hollywood is that fake and shallow that they think they rule the world already, So lets hope Arnie thinks he's achieved his major goal already and stops there.

Just hope the real people running the state can do a good job.

As long as Steve Irwin, Russel Crowe, or Kylie Minogue don't run over here, (or polititians) I'm happy :(

I also heared someone say Arnie was in charge of the best state in the best country in the world, get off your High Horse, They obviously got their facts wrong as Arnie will never be in charge of NSW, AUS.

Nellie

What does everyone mean, Arnie hasn't got any political experience?  He's groped women and lied to the public, hasn't he?

Andail

Exactly, Nellie...that guy has enough political experience to be the bloody president

DragonRose

Nah, Arnie can't be president.  He's too easy to understand.

I don't care about Arnold.
I'm scared of the real TERMINATOR  G.Bush Jr

Gregjazz

I think because Arnold wasn't born in America, and can't run for president is why he is going to be a better governor over California. Sure, he's probably not the right man for the job, but he's definitely better than Davis or McClintock.

Oh well, I don't want to argue with you guys. It just makes me mad when you talk about how wonderful Clinton was and our "8 years of peace". Do you know how many wars we fought while he was in office? Well over 8!

You call that peace?

Trapezoid

Not that I'd want Arnold for prez, but is there any real reason that people born off of American soil can't run for president? It should be the voters' decision...

m0ds

Would you want Mohammed Sajid Terrorist running YOUR country?

Las Naranjas

Especially when one of the things that has always been part of the American dream was the aspirations of migrants. But that seemingly doesn't penetrate through the state.

This brings up the point of how long does someone have to live in a country until they become accepted. I'm not talking about being born in the country. (this goes for any country, not necessarily just USA)

cause a lot of immigrants still refer to themselves as though they are from another country even if their family has been there for many generations.

Unless you are a native to your own country, the only reason you are there is because of immigration, then our governments say we don't want other immigrants in the countries our ancestors stole. our society is a bunch of hypocritical world fuckers.

The Baby boomers generation is the downfall of our society as we know it, the majority of the people that rule most aspects of this world, are from that generation (including my parents) All these people will be cashed up big time and retired in a few years, leaving the rest of us with all their mess, and not enough money to live in the world they fucked for us. Then they will expect us to look after them.

It will just create a much bigger gap between the rich and poor, and the 3rd world will become the 4th and 5th world.

who the fuck needs 100 million dollars, a year, or ever? then why don't they help anyone else, Maybe they have there CHARITIES, but that is just to help THEM pay less tax, while looking like an angel.

Maybe if Arnie and his mates got together they could pay off the states debt, they are probably part of the reason there is such a huge debt.

Greedy Liberal fucks cause all the problems, then turn a blind eye and hope it goes away. Then have the nerve to say they worked hard to earn their money, and at the same time others work harder for more years for much less.

Geez, It would be so hard to say 'I'll be back' 3 times in 20 years and earn millions for it, some have it so hard.

I've gotta think of a good one liner

"hastala...." - no

"bond......." - no

"yippee ky...." - no

"clint eastwood, I fuct em....." - no

Did I ask for fucking fries

TheYak

Rename the topic immediately to "Timosity for teh Governor!!"

Las Naranjas

For those confused by Timosity's comments concerning "Liberals"....

what in the US is refered to as a liberal is here called a "small l liberal" as the largest conservative party (who is now in government with the other large, but useless conservative party) is called the Liberal party. This name was undertaken to reflect British rather than european liberalism and refers to Liberal trade, as to say enterprise, to contrast with the apparently socialist Labor. It was formed when the Free Trade and Protectionist Parties merged against a common enemy.

That's all.

And Viva Multiculturalism.
I was in Cabramatta last week and I can't help but love that suburb.

In that case, I vote Chris Jones.

Whadd'ya mean, he's real?

Domino

if CJ were to run for governor of my state, he would have my vote, unless Howard Stern decided to run again. Then i would have to go with Howard Stern.

Imagine a debate between Chris Jones & Howard Stern. Man, that would be a thing to see.

Long live Baba Booey!!

My election promise would be Free Beer for All!

I challenge Howard Stern to beat that.

...who's Howard Stern?

Timosity

Yes, If only Homer Simpson could run for President,

Free beer
no taxes
work the days you could be bothered

etc

Sure the world would fall apart, but how is that any different to now?

Vote 1 Blinky Bill (google)

Las, So you needed to pick up a few supplies in Cabramatta, eh, something to ease the pain of the HSC, they'd run out in Newcastle or something? well it's closer than Amsterdam I guess.

Las Naranjas

Yeah, they're deadset out of Taro in Newcastle

My buddy Duy is a Panthers fan, so we all became honourary panthers fans for the Grand Final and sat in the rain at the stadium.
Since Duy is under 18 I had to place his bets for him as well. $5 on Rooney as first tryscore paying $15 to the dollar, and $5 on Priddis for the Clive Churchill medal, paying $24.

He had a profitable night.

Then we went to Cabramatta for lunch the next day and I had a drink with what Gilbert later tells me is a vegetable like a potato.

CJ, Howard Stern is a morning radio Shock Jock, who is very popular in the US and Canada. He also did a movie some years back called Private Parts, and two books also which he wrote.
His first book was Private Parts, and the second was called Miss America (i think thats it)

Howard Stern got pulled off the air in Quebec for making jokes about french people.

I guess all the jokes about jewish, black, italian, female, short, tall, fat, skinny, rich, poor, dumb etc people were okay though.

Why is Howard Stern an Asshole?? Please elaborate.

Moresco

Now that Arnold is the 'governator', I think it's funny what he said.  They asked him if he still intended to look into those allegations about his past and his clever one liner response was simply "old news".  Heh! GO Arnold! I voted for Gary Coleman.  Oh wait, that was Gary Coleman for the male porn role in Mary Carey's next film. WOO!
