I am trying to think back, but i believe there was a version of Kings Quest on the Nintendo Entertainment System.  I recall that Kings Quest 5 was ported to the machine, but i can't remember. If anybody knows or even has any screen shots, that would be appreciated.  I also think i saw screen shots that looked nothing like the computer version of the game. Forgive me, when i think about it, it all seems to be a blur. Thanks

Hi Shawn, great name.

I just did some searching and actually saw a pic of KQ5 on NES, but i don't know how to show it. I guess i wasn't dreaming. I would sure like to get my hands on it though.

Shawn :-)

Nostradamus

Why would they do a version of game of such capablities on a lame system like the NES?

Get a NES emulator and find the KQ5 rom at:
http://www.iwn.fi/~timod/games_nesroms.htm

(scroll down, they're sorted alphabetically)

It's actually pretty fun to play a conversion of games you know from other platforms. Also note the Maniac Mansion rom further down the page.

Edit: D'oh! The links to the roms seem to be broken. But really, it shouldn't be hard to find. Google-search for "nes rom king's quest 5 emulation" or something like that.

Edit2: http://www.romnation.net/ seems to have it, but I didn't check if it worked. Those porn banners scared me away.

At least www.vimm.net has it, and it works, and that site has no porn banners. ;)

And yes, I've played it. Surprisingly good conversion actually. Sure the graphics are quite crappy when compared to the original, and the interface isn't the greatest, but considering how few adventure games NES has, it's a nice addition.

As for Maniac Mansion, I have it's Swedish version on the original cartridge. It started my interest in adventure games, by the way. ^^

Krynge

haha this is ridiculous!! What a joke - this was probably the poorest port I've ever seen.. Especially for an adventure game! I wonder if anyone actually ever finished it - I mean the game was hard enough to finish on the computer, let alone dodgy graphics.. By far Sierra's biggest mistake.

It was on the NES because that was the nicest console system available at the time.  Why else? Oh and not to mention the market was probably growing so much & they wanted to see if they could get a piece of it.  Makes perfect sense actually.  Unfortunately it didn't work, probably could have on the SNES.

Edit:
Here is the game & the emulator if you want to try it out.  This is the best emulator that I know of, it's fastest & has just about everything supported.  Works great for KQ5.  You will think the sound is messed up, but it's not.  Heh.

King's Quest V NES
This is a rar file, it contains two files: The King's Quest V.nes(the game file) and the zip file containing the emulator(NNNesterJ in English).

Heh, King's Quest 1 is also for the Sega Master System. I got the ROM if anyone wants it.

PS
Would anyone happen to know of an NES emulator with TVmode or at least scnalines with blurring? I'll be cornswabbled if I can find one.

Yuck. And miss out on all the pixely goodness?

Domino

well, i got a chance to play it tonight, and was less than thrilled. I thought the interface was too cumbersome to use with the keyboard, plus the graphics stunk. Why were they only using like 4 colors? It's like comparing apples and oranges when comparing NES KQ5 and PC KQ5. Hey, and thanks for the links you gave me, appreciate it.

Snake, if you're talking about Tv-scanline emulation, that's in almost every Nes emulator I've used.  I know it's in NNNesterJ & probably in FCEUltra(though I don't recommend it, it's slow). :)

So there you go.  If you have NNNesterJ(it's in the link I made in the previous post), it's on the Graphics section. Can't miss it.

I can't complete my nostalgic ways without it looking as close to a tv as possible. Pixely goodness is for adventure games ;) One of these days I"m going to buy one of those video cards with a TVout thingermadoodily.

I've tried quite a few and those that I tried don't have any blurring options. Yes, most have scanlines, but scanlines are junk without blurring. The best TVmodes I've seen are for GENS, MEKA and HANDY. With GENS you must select a scanline option, like 50% then select fast blur. MEKA and HANDY have a TVmode option and they rule (they don't blur, but they still rule). GENS comes the closest I've seen to a real TV.

--EDIT--
Funny you should mention NNNesterJ, I just downloaded it like a half hour ago.

Well it's by far my favorite.  Especially since it's in English & Japanese.  That just is awesome.  :)

Just out of curiosity, why do you like the tv-modes? To me, tv is really yucky looking.  Maybe hdtv is better, I've never seen it. ?? Either way, just wonderin. :)

:P
When I was a kid I played NES all the time, and I mean all the time. That's all I did. Forget going outside and playing, I stayed in a played Nintendo (which is probably why I'm so fucked up today...but that's a whole different thread that I'll probably write one of these nights I get hammered again :P ). When I play a ROM, it's not the same. It'll never be the same anyway, I'm not a kid anymore and I just don't have a working NES with every single game. So the closest thing to it is emulators with TVmode or scanlines with a fast blur type option. I remember when I first download GENS and popped in my Willy Beamish CD that I haven't played in AGES. I could never beat the damned thing because my SegaCD died like a year after I got it...
Anyway, I put the scanlines on, turned on fast blur... holy shit. It made me fell like a kid again. It weirdly brought back a shit-load of memories. Same as playing NES roms.

That's why.

Well that answers my question. :) I like emulators to play the japanese games that I didn't get to earlier cuz I grew up in the US.  Basically if I can play it I'm happy, but yah my childhood was the same.  Indoors all day with the nes, and later the snes...only game I had was StreetFighter 2, which is still my favorite game. ^^ Good times.
