Ok... I've done some research for a friend of mine, on removing all those annoying ads, that keep popping up, and those yes/no popups to install adware.

You might already know this, but just for the once that don't i'm sharing this info.

The first thing you should do is downloading and installing the application Ad-Aware by Lavasoft. Download it here : http://lavasoft.element5.com/support/download/
Install it, and run a deep scan on your harddrive, to remove all adware on your pc.

Second you should protect your pc against the adware so it won't come back. To do this there is the great program SpywareBlaster. This program blocks your pc against all known adware, so you can freely use internet without those thousands of popups. You can find Spywareblaster here : http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
Install the program and check all the items of the list shown in the program, and then click the button to protect your pc from them.

Now you are free from adware! Though it is a good idea to check for updates sometimes, because theres also coming new adware to the web. I hope this is useful for some of you.

Thanks for sharing, Minimi!

I've been thinking it would be nice to have an application to prevent the Adware from getting on my computer but obviously I never actually searched for it. SpyWareBlaster seems to be exactly what I was thinking about - thanks!

I am testing this stuff now... If it is some kind of virus or something strange, like a solidus software trojan I´ll kill ya, ok?  ;D

one thing you should know about adware removing progs is that once you use it, if you're using regular kazaa it won't run after, they can also delete stuff that isn't adware...

No boyd, that's not true, because if you are using kazaa lite : http://www.kazaalite.tk it keeps running. Though if you have normal kazaa, it won't run because of built-in adware. And if you even want it not removed, you can uncheck in the program the kazaa files, and keep them on your harddisk. That's the same with Virusscanners. For example when explorer.exe is infected, a virusscanner asks you to delete it, but it's a program you need, for running windows, so you can try to only fix it, or leave it alone. An adware program or a virusscanner, will never delete files without asking you to delete them, only if you selected in the program to delete without asking. But by default this option is off.

I really, really hate to be the one defending BOYD, Minimi, but he did specify 'regular' Kazaa.

Minimi

ok, I really really hate to admit it, but I was wrong, because didn't read the 'regular' word ;)

And not only that, Ad-Aware does pick up files and registration keys that aren't spyware and doesn't tell you "These files and keys aren't spyware and they are necessary for a certain piece of non-ad related software".

Before you install it, it even says in the license that LavaSoft isn't responsible if Ad-Aware fucks up your computer.

I personally think Adware is a much greater risk to my computer than the removal or blocking programs. To date, I've had no problems with them. Should there be any problems, I take the consequenses as they are. At least I made the choice to install the program that screwed up my computer.

Thank your lucky stars you're not using Spybot then.

Spybot's trickier to use compared to Ad-Aware.

EDIT:
Also, I think there's some spyware, like DLLs, that Ad-Adware has trouble with because the OS is using them. (i.e. You can't delete a file that your computer is using)

I read a newspaper article once that said Adaware ITSELF is spyware. You can never be sure in anything.

spybot search and destroy

and you're covered.

I just use Spybot S&D.. no problems so far..  the only program I use that it would mess up is easily ignored by un-checking a little box.  I haven't had any virii, excessive pop-ups, spyware or other crap emerge since I stopped letting other people use my PC. (Some dumbasses'll click anything)
