Annoying Signature Lines :(

Has anyone else noticed the recent profusion of annoying signature lines some people have been using here?

IMHO, it's annoying to wade through a thread where the signature's are 10 times larger than the content of the post.  I think it's a rude distraction we can all do without.  

Just to be clear, I'm not referring to the little 20 pixel banners folks sometimes use to promote their current project.  I'm talking about one with gigantic graphics (50, 100+ pixels)  and/or  8 or more lines of text.  

Not to be mean or anything but do we need to includ some guidelines about this in the "Read This First" rules?   What do you all think?

As a person with 56k dialup (Not pointing any fingers, but fuck you, Eircom, goddamn lying whores) I hate huge signatures, naturally.

Excessive signatures are pretty useless. I hate them. I say down with signatures. Well, big unnecessary ones, anyway.

Thirded.  Few signatures contain any useful information at all, so if yours is exessive, just get rid of the really useless bullshit and keep the slightly-less-useless bullshit.

I don't know ... I agree with RickJ's post.  But I also know that a lot of people, well, this'll only put their backs up and we'll probably see some even longer sigs now.

But you never know!  Maybe they'll see the light.

Rick, you're a bit of an old fart, so you tend to get disgruntled easily. I totally understand that, and do not hold it against you. But I've yet to see a truly offensive, humongous signature. Granted, I avoid the tech forums, announcement forum, help forum, and any other forum directly related to ags, save the AGS Gen forum. And I don't read every single thread in the gen gen because frankly, there's only so much complaining I can take (unless i'm complaining, in which case I can take it all day.)

A polite request that users consider those people with slow modems and desiring a streamlined asthetically pleasing forum should be adequate. Those who ignore the request should get the Boot of Righteousness, a smack upside the head, and a knob of ginger up the ass. But to make a rule dictating signature size is a bit extreme.

Personally I think large sigs are abit annoying, but may not hurt that much, unless there's a HUGE picture in it.

Actually, I remember Yurok (an old user) really ticked me off with his signature.

He doesn't hang around here anymore but he had that huge-assed Star Wars signature that included a pic of him dressed as a Jedi (with a mullet).

His sig was way bigger than that though -- It was about the third of my screen!

Now that I look closely at it, though, he doesn't have a mullet.

Anyway, it was a wise decision to remove the sig -- I nearly ripped my eyeballs out after seeing that gigantic thing one too many times.

RickJ has opened a debate in a very polite way, thanks Rick for that, I can think in many people of here who could have started the same topic in a very different way  .

If you want my opinnion, it should be a good idea to put a limit to the sizes of the signature, but I can´t really recall one of that "big and annoying" signatures... I dunno, maybe this thread will be enough or Rick, couldn´t you PM to that person(people) whose signature(s) is(are) too big?

Yeah I hate big sigs. Especially as i'm on dialup. I think that if the sig is bigger than your post then its too big. I'd say a maximum of 5 lines is enough. Maybe more with a picture or something.

This is one of the reasons that I don't like the Tierra forums that much. Some of the sigs there are massive.

I don't think yours is that bad jannar. Probably tahts as big as they should get.

To clarify things a bit... the larest sigs in this thread so far, have been Trap's and jannar's  which I think are fine.  Trap's sids takes 5 lines but each one is a hotlink to somewhere presumeably of importance.  Jannar's little banner is just that ... little.  

On the other hand,  song lyrics, 100+ pixel pacmen, and other distracting blather are not appropriate, IMHO.

I don't find Inkoddi's or Scummbuddy's sigs annoying at all. And as for the "i'm on a 56k", it would take about 3 seconds to load both Scumm's and Inkoddi's sigs. I don't see the big deal.

All sigs in the posters at this thead are fine, I think. But some newcomers on the tech forums just have too big sigs. Like, not pointing at anyone, a picture with transpearent space above and below the actual pic like 50 pixels, or 10 lines of text. They are annoying, since they interfere with the posts.

I haven't seen too many annoying signatures. I think there was one kid who had a list of every single band he liked in his signature, but it was pretty unobtrusive. If I see a signature I find particularly offensive to my noggin, I just send a private message to the person and ask them to change it. Usually they're polite about it and fix the signature. It's kind of like telling someone politely that they smell.
