I'm not really familiar with which servers are better or worse, so I'll leave that to everyone else that does.

I figured this would be a great topic for people who are looking for a host since that question is asked a lot.

There is a good hosting server on http://narod.yandex.ru
It supports files up to 5 mg.
Unfortunately it is in Russian.

It's also really great for hosting websites - no ads or anything, they just put ads on the 404s.

The catch? No web-based upload/download system - you have to use FTP (which really isn't all that bad).

Except it only works in the US & Canada

some of their sites work elsewhere but not all, and a lot of people that have used it, have had problems with people downloading from it, so it's not as good as it seems.

I also used to use it, and for no reason without explanation my site was deleted, I emailed to see why and got no reponse.

Also if you use it make sure you choose an option somewhere that's for a non adult site or the 404 errors will give links to porn sites. Most Eurpeans won't be able to download from the site either even if they can see the page.

DomainDLX seemed quite nice but they don't allow any exe or zip files on their servers...

Currently I'm using FreeWebs but they're pretty slow... Every free server seems to have something that makes them pretty much like crap...
I haven't made any games yet so I'll keep on using FreeWebs.

Are there ANY sites that have atleast 50 MB space, no filesize limit and servers that are faster then a stone?

has what you want in the above quote, but they also have ads and sometimes popups, they also have PHP & MySQL, It's the best free one out there considering what you get with it.

but over all there is no such thing as a good free server

www.prohosting.com is pretty good. I am currently using lite.prohosting.com or something like that. They do have a free plan I believe.

I have just bought an unlimited hosting account. Once i have received login details etc and set my site up on the new server, i am considering creating a seperate page for people to upload content to.

I use http://www.freenet.de (60 MB web space, no proplem with zip files, size limit for single files 1.5MB)
It works fine for me.
But, well, it is german.
