Title: AGS and LCD Monitors
Post by: on Sun 16/04/2006 02:36:35
Hi all,

Recently I bought a Benq FP202W, and I must say it's been nothing but headaches for running old games in general. Thankfully MAME & Dosbox have configuration options to support its native resolution, and aspect ratio control. This particular model is widescreen so having the aspect control is a good thing.

Digressions aside though, I'm finding that AGS is completely crashing the entire system, because whatever resolution and refresh rate AGS is outputting is not known to the LCD display. Both DVI & VGA outputs report a signal not found, and then the entire system crashes.

Is there any way to control the output of AGS? In terms of what resolution to display and at what refresh rate? What refresh rate does AGS output to?

I guess finally, if a future version of AGS addresses this problem, can games made with older versions (of AGS) be retrofitted with the new AGS engine? Or must they be re-compiled by the authors?

Many thanks

Or, in the meantime, run the game windowed.

I am using Samsung 770p (lcd) and i don't have ANY problems with older games/low resolution. Same was with my older samsung LCD model.

Did you check drivers CD for your monitor, maybe it contains some "force aspect ratio" program, or something.

I wish! Had I bought a Dell, I believe I would not have a problem.
This is a combination between owning ATI hardware, which does not offer a fixed aspect ratio option at present (although mobility chipsets do), and an LCD display which also cannot be set. So in effect, it isn't necessarily a problem with AGS per se.

Further to the issue though, is that 320x200/240 is the resolution which this display cannot support. Running games at 640x400/480 does work, albeit stretched to width and centered.

I do bring up the issue however as I believe in the future, more users will be encountering problems regarding LCD screens, which I hope the manufacturers of either the LCDs or the graphics hardware will begin to compensate for in the near future.

Recently though I have been learning a little bit about the SDL library which dosbox, scummvm et al uses to display their graphics. The SDL is completely configurable for aspect ratios, fixed resolutions, as well as different display modes. Through this, graphics filters can be optionally used such as hq3x etc.. Perhaps the AGS engine would benefit from allowing game authors to use these filters? or users to turn them on and off?

Sorry if that point's been raised ad nauseum already :)

Edit: Just noticed graphics filters have been implemented in the new beta!

If you're having issues with the video mode, run Setup and switch on letterbox mode, or try changing to 640x480.

Also, when you have a TFT make sure that the "85 hz" setting is NOT ticked.

I have a TFT screen but haven't had any problems, as you say it must depend on the manufacturer.
