Hello

I was just wondering if any - older or current - version of AGS will be released under the GNU GPL license, or open source licences equivalents.

I work on some games, and I plan to release them with the full project, for people to improve them, change them or take parts of it. I wanted to release thoses games under open sources licenses, but as far as I know, AGS - as it's not sharing its sources - is proprietary, then I can't use the license I wanted.

Will you release them ? Or , do you have an alternative for me ?

Thank you

Pierre

There is no restriction on how you publish your own work.   Many years ago I created an AGS  open source GUI script/template  for other people to use in creating their games and released it as open source.   Many others have also done so, publishing their work with LGPL, GPL, CC, etc.  The AGS Editor  is just the programming tool so why does it need to be open source?

After asking a cleverest friend, it appears that I was wrong.

Thank you, And for those you have the same question than me :

you can publish your work under open source licenses ( any ) , even if the "compiler" is not open source itself, which is the case for AGS.

Yes, I mean you can create games using Windows but it doesn't mean that they need to use Windows's licence agreement...

I'm not familiar with those lincense thingies, but I'll say it should be a different scenario than developing something with windows and letting it run under windows, as the package of the product needs not contain any components of windows in it (maybe that's one reason why most products out there aren't distributed with say VB or VC dlls that are required for them to function), as opposed to most cases of the AGS games, where a closed code engine executable is included in each package.

However, since the problem is settled I think there is nothing to fear.

(Even though if it does volates those errr...  rules, I think nobody really wastes his time and resources to care about those legal stuff, as long as you're not pirating big companies musics and movies, etc.)
