I've been working on my game for awhile, and when I loaded it up today to work on it some more, it said 'Invalid editor.dat file'. Is there any possible way I can fix this, because I have no idea what happened to the file, I didn't touch it.

The editor.dat file seems got corrupted somehow. Are there any other error messages just after  'Invalid editor.dat file' one? Are you able to edit your game at all?

Jelly King

It just says invalid editor.dat file, and then the hourglass comes up as if it's loading.

...and? is it get loaded? Or does AGS just hang on?

I think it's maybe a good idea to move the thread to the technical forum so CJ can take a look in it when he is back.

It doesn't load, but I'm able to go up to the bars at the top and use those. I tried creating a new game, and whenever I load that one, it works.

Is there anyway I could get my game back, or is it pretty much screwed once the editor.dat file goes?

The file stores all the general settings and is important one I'm afraid. All the sprites data should be ok but without the editor.dat file AGS can't access it properly.

Have you tried open it via Load an existing game option?

Btw, how big is your game?

EDIT: oh, and what AGS version you use?

Jelly King

I'm using Version 2.60 of AGS. I tried opening the file in the load an existing game but that didn't work either. My game was pretty big, I was probably about 30% done.

Can you open the editor.dat inside Notepad?

I ain't sure if it's related but did you happen to browse through other projects via the top menu (File > load game...) ?

Well, if you can open the file in Notepad, then I dont think it would be corrupt.

Maybe you could upload the file to the net, or post it's content here and maybe someone could have a look to see if somethings wrong. I'm not really all that technical, but it might help.

The file can be corrupt anyway, like not all data saved in the file.

From what I could see the global header and the global script are stored in the editor.dat. Also the sprites list, not sure what else.

You can try this to see how much you can get back:
Create a new blank game.
Copy your game folder and do the following with the copy:
copy the editor.dat from the new blank game over the broken editor.dat in the copy
then start agsedit and open the copied game.
It should open without errors, but also only with the global script from the new blank game. Probably the sprites won't be in the sprite manager either.

when you open the broken editor.dat in notepad, then you can get the global script from there (or as much as there exists).
I'm not sure what else can be recovered, maybe part of the sprite table.
