When I start up the editor the 'Adventure Game Studio' box will not disappear(the one with the mug) and a strange message appears saying the network resource is unavailable asking for an installation package called HpSdpAppCoreApp.msi. I have used the editor on Windows ME and wonder if it has anything to do with XP compatibility?
That's bizarre. Do you have any plugins installed? If so, try removing them.
I use AGS with Windows XP and never had any such problem.
A couple of things to try:
Check to make sure your Window's critical updates are current.
"HP" is a file related to "Hewlett-Packard" software.
A "msi" file is a "Microsoft Installer" file.
Did you recently delete or install some software? Some important file could have been accidentially deleted or overwritten.
If you recently un-installed some HP software, you might try reinstalling it to see if it reinstalls the missing file it's looking for.
Scan your system for any viruses or spyware that may be lurking on it:
TrendMicro has a free online scan for viruses:

Ad-Aware is a good free utility for scanning for and removing most known sypware:

Also, the following suggestion may also work for you:
1. Click Start and then Run.
2. In the Open field, type: msconfig
3. Click OK. The System Configuration Utility window opens.
4. Click the General tab and select Selective Startup.
5. Click the Startup tab and remove the checks from any tasks that
do not contribute to the system or are unwanted. If unsure
about a task, write the name down and research it on the
Internet.
A good place for checking for various startup applications, what they are and what they do and if it's needed, is over at:

6. Click OK to accept the changes, and then restart the computer.
7. Windows is now running using Selective Startup, which means that
the tasks you selected in the previous steps will not load when
Windows restarts.
CAUTION: If Windows or other important software stops working
after a checkmark is removed from a task you were unsure
about, start Windows in Safe Mode and replace the
checkmark. To start Windows in Safe Mode, turn the
computer on and when the first screen opens, press F8
