Hello everyone.
I tried for several days to repair this problem, but to no avail :
when playing most AGS games, I have no music during the game (but I do have sounds).
There are some exceptions, such as the Ben Jordan games and apprentice 1 deluxe, but for all the others (5 days a stranger and its sequels, two of a kind,...) I have no music.

I tried every solution I came across but I still have the same problem. However, I still think the solution is easy but evades me.

Some help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I have this problem too. Also if I make a game using midis the music dosint play but mp3s work. this may be the problem.

Sekoria

Yeah but I'm not sure how to make an already completed game works with music. I finished some games without music, but for some of them I heard that the musics were quite good :(

So if anybody has an idea, feel free to share your knowledge (especially if you had the problem and solved it).

I was going to start a new thread about this but I somehow managed to find this one. It looks a few weeks old, but it seems like no one's posted a possible solution yet.

I am having the exact same problem as the others here. There is no music on any AGS games I've played, only sound effects. There must be a simple solution. Anyone have any ideas? I've tried messing around with the sound settings in setup, but I havn't had any luck.

Gilbert

Try setting up the game and experiment with different device settings for music (if there're more than one option), you may also try upgrading DirectX, make sure that your system does have a MIDI driver installed.

I've tried messing with different audio settings in the game setup, but nothing seems to work.
I know I do have MIDI drivers so I don't get why I'm not getting sound.

In my device manager, under sound devices I have two things listed with MIDI functions:
MPU-401 and Realtek AC'97 Audio

In their properties, both of them are set to "use MIDI features on this device"

Does that have anything to do with it? Are they maybe conflicting with each other or something?
Will changing some sort of setting or property on my MIDI devices fix anything?

Gilbert

By the way, check your mixer setting, in case you may accidentally muted the synthesyser channel.

dodgethesnail

nope, nothing is muted whatsoever

If you've got two MIDI devices listed, make sure that the correct one is set as the default. If you try to play a MIDI file in Media Player, does it work?

dodgethesnail

no, it does not work when i play midi files in media player. i have no idea what is wrong.
which midi device is the "correct" one? and how would i set it to default?

Snarky

The Realtek AC'97 is almost certainly the right device, unless have an external MIDI device you want to use.

To set your default device, go to your Control Panel and select the "Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices" category (if you have categories), then "Sounds and Audio Devices". This, predictably, will open the properties dialog for sounds and audio devices. Select the "Audio" tab and look at the "MIDI music playback" box. There should be a dropdown for the "default device".

Choose Realtek, try playing MIDI files in Media Player. If it doesn't work, try the other values. There might be an entry along the lines of "Windows GS Wavetable SW Synth", which is the Windows software synthesizer. That will probably work, although it sounds pretty crappy.

dodgethesnail

ok thank you, i will try that out and see how it works.

dodgethesnail

ok, i tried that suggestion and it works now. i feel stupid for not figuring that out on my own. anyway, thank you. consider this one solved.

I have similar problem with mid in AGS games. But in Windows (Media Pla, Winamp) all mids work.

Recently I've solved this "bug". In "Start" (Pusk) - Control Panel - Media (Sounds) - section Audio. There is "MIDI" at the bottom. I set Default Midi Device (instead of soundcard's device - SoundMax).

And one more solution: I had a problem a while ago where I was editing my game and whenever I tested it, I could hear the music, fine, great. Then I opened WMP and listened to other midis I could use for my game, then closed WMP again. After that, midi files refused to play anywhere: my game, online games, whatever.

The problem was that for some reason, whenever WMP plays a midi and then is closed, the synth volume is reduced to zero. The synth volume is what plays midi music, so I was hearing silence. Just open the volume control on your computer and move the bar back to max. The problem should be solved. Until WMP goes again.

Of course, this may just be my old computer  :P
Check out my games! (Not all made with AGS)
