Is there a way to make speaker music like in old Larry?
if not.. fix it! its an important thing for us oldies...

Privateer Puddin'

i guess, Internal PC speaker

Synthetique

PC Speaker.. you know... the speaker inside that big can with lots of electric stuff in it..

Archangel (aka SoupDragon)

Eugh! I hate internal pc speaker music with a passion. If anyone made a game with pc speaker music I would destroy their pc, kill them and their family, then their town, then most of the population of the world. Unfortunately.

Synthetique

good for you..  ;D
but some of us likes it..

Gilbert

Nope, and unfortunately not many people have an internal speaker (eg. me) any more so they won't be able to hear the music.

The best way is to make MOD files with cheesy samples like the speaker tones.

Synthetique

cool.. that will do..

scotch

Wow, I've never heard of a pc with no internal speaker ._. guess mine's just old.

Synthetique

mine's new and i have internal speakers

Ishmael

I have a like one year old comp, and I have a speaker. I (and and the others in Dima) have made lots of Finnish text adventures with speaker music...

* running away screeming like crazy *
I used to make games but then I took an IRC in the knee.

Isn't it built-in by default to beep system alarms etc? Or is there only integrated sound cards now? Anyway AGS doesn't support speaker I think but it's not needed as almost all people have sound cards. And you could simulate it if you get a nostalgia like me sometimes. :)

Pumaman

Sorry, I'm not going to implement PC Squeaker support into AGS, it may be old-school but I'm not sure it's possible to do any more under Windows.

Ishmael

Well, QBasic can do it...

Nope, there're actually some new computers without built-in speakers. Moreover, my computers at home were all assembled ourselves, and we didn't bother putting teh Speakers in them.

Mennuz

If you do qbasic "beep' in windows, jou hear a wav "duw" sound

Synthetique

Ishmael

Yes, but

PLAY "T120 a8 c7 d5 b7" will play the speaker.... I like the beeping...

QBasic is not a Windows application.

It would be cool to have PC Speaker support in AGS, but I don't believe it is technically feasible to do, as the Win32 API provides no reliable way of accessing the speaker.

Fuzzpilz

To do the really neat stuff as in the intro of Maniac Mansion PC or something (or the old Russian game Perestroika, does anybody else remember that?), you'd need direct access to various hardware - you'd have to install fairly complicated interrupt handlers and so on. Doing that well is high programming art (unless you want the crap produced by e.g. QBasic's play instruction). Doing it well in a program running under Windows is (probably, I'm not entirely sure) impossible. I think it would work if CJ wrote a device driver for this (which might have to replace the standard system speaker driver), but I really don't think it's worth the effort for either the designer or the player.

Pumaman

Yep that's right, a device driver would work - but I doubt anyone would want the associated hassle of having to install the driver properly in order to use AGS - not to mention the effort for me to write it.

In conclusion, nice idea but not practical I'm afraid. :)

Synthetique: You could fake it by playing a one-channel XM with only looped square-waves for samples. That would sound just like the internal speaker, and would also be much easier to turn off ;p

SPEAKER.XM

Haha, yes, that's excellent sound!

For some silly reason, I felt like expanding it a bit. I was bored. :)

I do know the internal speaker isn't capable of multiple voices, but like I said, I was bored, and boredom doesn't have any rules!1
Achtung Franz! The comic

Pumaman

lol guys, that's great - it still can't quite match the tinny echo of the PC speaker though ;)

Privateer Puddin'

man they were fantastic :) :D

Synthetique

cool tune... but i allready said that ;P

Or the inevitable, mind numbing, piercing volume
