Title: AGS facts
Post by: Peder 🚀 on Wed 22/09/2010 01:04:05
So, I was thinking to make some sort of AGS facts feature on AGSArchives.com that will show a random fact about AGS on the website.

So why am I posting here?
Because I would love for some peeps on here to help me add some facts!
It could for example be things like:

"As of 2010 there has been made over 1500 games with AGS"
"The Adventures of Fatman is the first AGS game going commercial"
"The first AGS version was released in XXXX"

Basically anything AGS related, either funny or just informative.
Any help with this would be highly appreciated!

Thanks,
Peder Johnsen.

"Addendum: Urban legend has it that two men, Ben and Vince as some sources call them, unknowingly came close to discover Yahtzee's secret by coincidentally starting their game titles with symbols rather than characters or numbers. According to more gruesome variants of the tale, these men are now on the hit list of the (almost certainly) mythical "6 Day Assassin"."

People people!

"We all know that the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse are called Fountain of Youth, Run Hot, The Legend of the Lost Lagoon and The Legend of Leitor's Edge. When you see any of them appear, you know that hell has frozen over and the end of time is nigh."

AGS used to run in DOS until version <foo>
AGS runs in Linux since version <bar>
The editor sometimes inserts lines that say "DO NOT EDIT OR MODIFY THIS LINE" but nothing bad happens if you do.
The Make My Game For Me button really works!
The empty game template isn't entirely empty.
The AGS game with the most rooms is <qux>
The AGS game with the least sprites is Vector Vendetta.
The standard "poster" and "blue cup" items are hand-drawn by Chris.
The standard "Roger" character is a handmade attempt to duplicate Roger Wilco pixel-by-pixel.
The standard font is also from Space Quest.

...afaik

Which limits would that be? Because there's several limits, and most of them have been changed once or twice in the past decade.

304, the Number of the Ben (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?action=profile;u=4786) might refer to:
- a Sri Lankan card game
- the most common type of stainless steel
- Peugot 304
- a fictional class battlecruiser in the Stargate universe
- 19 x 16

It refers to the paganist recitation in Judas Evangelion (a powerful mech).

"The man who shall make 304 games, shall gain boobs, asses, and stamina. And eventually will end the world."

COUNTER:

Nice! Not sure if it's a fact, but I'd like to find out:

The first trilogy in AGS was The Book of Spells by Spyros. In fact after research, if that's the case, it'd also qualify for first quadrilogy.

The only franchise that ends in four parts is Book of Spells and Lone Case, which surprised me when I figured out. I think also Demon Slayer by Squinky ends in 4 parts.

AGS wants you to enjoy Christmas with your family.

The Princess Marian series saved SSH's marriage (I don't know if this is true or not, but I say let the tabloids sort it out).

Bill Cosby was the first celebrity to appear in an AGS game (I think).

The Barn Runner series has never won a single AGS award. (Shocking I know).

And that's about all I can think of at the moment.

I'm sure there are several games in French, aren't there? If games with translations count, then Portuguese and Czech should be on there. First game using translations? Game with most translations? First game with windows executable? First game that lacks a DOS executable? First game that uses the movie play module?

Also, your "first compiled joke game" predates your "first compiled game, any category".

In my list the games are without english translation.
Games having English + other languages could indeed be added but I can't search for that easily...

First game with windows executable: I found this one but i'm not sure if that's the first windows game:
First game using Winsetup.exe - Island Quest [demo] - by OneThinkingGal and ._. - 2002-02.

Fix the predating error btw, thanx ;)

Hey Arjon,

I'd just like to mention that I've released "Alles Euro" on Feb 24th 2000 ;)
The development started in December 1999 and I'm also pretty sure I've released a demo back then.
I even remember that CJ found it "pretty impressive", hehe.

It's common knowledge that Lassi Quest (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?action=detail&id=17) was the 1st ever made game (I couldn't remember whether it was still in AC era or AGS, but if it was AGS, then there was no single game compiled with AC) but none of the 'first xxx game' categories here listed it.

But how can you then explain that Lassi Quest uses the character from Alles Euro. That guy that I "open sourced" after my release.
Another proof is that Visy imported Lassi (who I named Mac) without blocking the palette, hence the strange colours.

Btw. that's a new fact: first public available character beside BeMan and Roger. :D

Heh, maybe you're correct, as I remember both games appeared at approximately the same time, but I couldn't tell which was first, though I think one point people did argue at the time was that LQ was a "full game" or something like that. I couldn't judge as I never played your game for obvious reasons (it wasn't even in English, right?) and I didn't even know they share graphics. ;)

I know Lassi Quest is know as 1st ags game ever, but:

Alles Euro/Everything Euro [Original version] by abstauber has been compiled in 2000-02
Lassi Quest 1 [Original version] by Visy has been compiled in 2000-12

Does that mean that I do not have the 'real' original version?

EDIT:
Abstauber already proofed who was first, hadn't read that post when posting this one...
Anyway, the compile dates mentioned in this post "might" be a proof too ;)

OK, I thought "Alles Euro/Everything Euro" [compiled/released 2000-02-24] was the 1st ever ags game but now I found this:

Stickmen v1.0 by DGMacpee has been compiled in 2000-01 5:45 [short games]
Ultimerr by DCMacPee has been compiled in 2000-01-01 5:02 [short games]

So, can someone validate what the real 1st AGS game is?

That's still possible, so build dates aren't concrete proofs (but other stuff are, as settled in the above discussions and I'm sure you're aware of them), unless you can confirm that the files are indeed the first version.

One problem was that the Wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adventure_Game_Studio#History) even lists LQ to have been released in as early as late '99. I don't know who added that (but at least the page in our own Wiki doesn't have this claim), and I couldn't confirm it as it's been a long, long time, but if that's true then it at least shows that you cannot judge this by build dates (not to mention that dates can be inaccurate and it's those favourite "millenium-bug" years).

Edited:
I'm quite sure that the Euro learning game and LQ predated DG's games. That's possibly an indication that your files weren't the original versions/build dates couldn't be taken seriously.

Updated the fact list part "At 2010-09-28 the AGS database contains 1188 entries" from 1192 to 1188.

Because these entries are no ags game entries:

entry 84= is only an entry to notify about the RON games serie
entry 1123 = only a notification for the "enter the story" serie [1201 & 1202]
entry 1299 = is only a short animation, not an ags game
entrie 1334 = is a a gamemaker file [.gmk], so no ags game

Good news - I've archived my complete ac folder back in February 2000. So here's the final proof:

www.sonores.de/temp/ac.zip

Inside you'll also find my first (compiled) test game ever, dating November 99.

Enjoy :D

PS. I also have Alles Euro as an installer - but this ancient ac folder is much more interesting and contains TEH SOURCE  :=

A-w-e-s-o-m-e-!
And thanx, this one goes into my ags games museum in a special glass case ;)

B.t.w.: All 3 games run smooth on XP and after setting the soundcard to 'autodetect' even the music and sfx works ok. :)

test = indy-looking-guy test game [1999-11-29]
demo = demo quest [1999-12-29
pu = alles euro [2000-02-01] => 2000-02: so now you've officially beaten "Lassi Quest" being the proven 1st evah AGS game :D

Questions out of curiosity:
Does the indy-looking-guy test game got a 'real' name?
Where stands PU for?
Is this PU/'alles euro' version the complete game or a game in it's beta phase?
Has the other two demo's/test games ever been completed?

Thanx again Mr. Hochrotations-zerstäuber!

Haha.. cheers :)

Well demo is just Demo Quest, which came with AGS. It's also a reason why I chose AGS - it was the only free engine which could compile it's own demo. Oh well, Indiana Java could do that too but didn't have an IDE: roomedit ftw!

That test game is really just a small learning test. Just something small to see if AGS was capable of what I had in mind of Alles Euro. I know that there were bigger plans, but that cheesy recolored Indy were just a tad too cheesy.

PU stands for Projekt Unterricht, which means project education class - so yes, it was a school project in the first place. And a 1st class excuse to make games in school :)

The archive should contain the most recent version - although there is that installer, but the contents shouldn't differ.

'glad you had fun :D

This here says Lassi Quest is late '99.

http://en.academic.ru/dic.nsf/enwiki/499552

So do a few other sources, some of which seem to have the exact same text but this is the first in the google results I spotted.

And has anybody asked visy for counter proof or have you just ruled over the whole deal?

My next step is indeed to ask Visy about this.
Also because in my opinion such documents like you posted ]http://en.academic.ru/dic.nsf/enwiki/499552] (http://en.academic.ru/dic.nsf/enwiki/499552)are not really proof worthy. Only Visy's answers can clear up questions for me.

Still this is a strange fact:
Quote from: abstauber on Wed 29/09/2010 07:52:35
But how can you then explain that Lassi Quest uses the character from Alles Euro. That guy that I "open sourced" after my release.
Another proof is that Visy imported Lassi (who I named Mac) without blocking the palette, hence the strange colours.

But I like to make clear that I'm not doing this to change the well know fact on this forum/community that Lassie Quest should be the 1st ags game ever.
So sorry if I'm stepping on someone's toes... :-[
I did this only for the 'ags facts' which Peder asked for... Thats all. :)

Though that can also go the other way. The thing is whoever created the character made the first AGS game

This image shows that the character fits this game more. So question is was the character given to visy/public after the release of Alles Euro?

There was no screenshot in the DB and I wanted to see how the game looks (and I love watching playthroughs)

I'm still confused because in the beginning the video says "it is seen as the first finished AGS game" and later on it says "The main character sprites are from a game called Alles Euro"

Is there also a youtube playthrough of "Alles Euro"? Didn't find one.

Definitely it answers a main question, now the only question remains if Abstauber released the sprite before the game(Lassi Quest).

Added 4 ancient hourgames to the Quest list:

Ninja Quest to the Quest-list: Ninja Quest by Ghormak [2002-03].
Kikme Quest [2002-12]
Interresting Basket Quest [2002-11]
Annoying Quest [2003-05]

Most used noun in [database and non-database] game titles "Quest": in 146 AGS game titles (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=41870.msg555178#msg555178).

These are the files Visy released back then, the suomalainen version dates March 11th, 2000.

Yet another correction to that list: "Osher Bli Gvulot" is not the first Hebrew AGS game.
"Who sent me to Avadon" (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=23492.0) predates it by about two years.

I can say for sure that Gorthor of the Cave People (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?action=detail&id=379) was the first game released that used the Windows editor.

STEPHEN FRY: Now, what was the very first AGS game released?
ALAN DAVIES: Lassi Quest.
STEPHEN FRY: Oooooohhhhh!

*BRUUUM, BRUUUUUUM!*

I think that a cool AGS fact could be all the members of the forum that have some variation of "Chasing the Dream" under their avatar.
