Ben Jordan in Le Chateaux Macabre - a fan-film by Screen 7 featuring a bundle of people from the AGS community, filmed at Mittens 2008! 35 minutes of mystery as we follow Ben on his investigation of the strange suicides taking place in a French hotel...

The film is online! This is the first cut, so there's still some rough parts (mostly sound) and a few other bits that I've since changed, but I won't be able to put up the best edition until next week or the week after. Still, here's the movie! I can't offer a download URL yet either but may do that later tonight if I get the chance! Some parts of the movie don't convert well into WMV, so maybe some special free DVD versions are in order. None the less, ENJOY!!!

ps, Some dialogue doesn't quite work or tie the story together...but I suppose that happens when you make it all up on the spot :p

I quite liked it!  The only problem I had dialogwise was trying to understand Davy.  I only managed to get about 40% of what he was saying most of the time (partly because of the voice mastering and partly because he was laying on the accent too thick) but otherwise I think it's great fun.  I would've liked the climax to be more serious, but for what it is it's pretty enjoyable.  Nice work, guys!

And what's with Percival's silly walk? ^_^

Hahaha, that's amazing! I like how people in my school might spend MONTHS on short films that turn out to be 5 minutes long in the end, whereas you managed over 30 minutes in a WEEK. And to be honest, this film is so much better than most short films that get produced in my school. Fantastic work, m0ds and everyone! If you ever put this on dvd, I'll have a copy, please.

I haen't watched the whole film yet but I already love it! But I already know that some bits of my acting which I'd like to have done differently, I'm hard to please (particularly by myself ;D). But I'm amazed that you've done such a good job on such short notice, I suppose I could have expected such a good job in editing with your experience in doing that.

I must say the scene where I fall into the river was very nicely done (talking about your editing, my own acting does come up for some self-criticism, that stupid fat grin on my face does seem quite out of place given the part).

I originally felt that the plot where the ancestor died there was a bit cliched, but if you want to prevent all cliches, get a paid scriptwriter! It did work beautifully for this film though.

Oh, and Bob (and the rest who were by the river or elsewhere talking to Ben) thanks for your kind words :)

So Mark, I'd like to close off by telling you my judgment on this film (and the process of making it): het was zo mooi.

So, any ideas yet for Miamittens09? If we start coming up with script-ideas soon it might even work out better than this (can perfection be betterred?)  And having just watched the whole movie, I'd like to ay that these were some fablous acting performances by all of you, ladies and gents. And the last special effect is also beautifully done, it worked better than I dared hope for)
But I still find it slightly ironic that Radiant's character was named Claude, while his real name is Pieter whixch is obviously much more similar to Pierre, so we'd have had Jean-Pierre  talking to Pierre (that acting looked almost professional guys!), not an uncommon occurrence in France, esp. not over some wine.
Oh and I also loved the humour in there. Shame I couldn't quite hear Davy and Ryan's comment "So, you're the Englishman?" "Yes" "You sleep in the cellar". That was a great ad-lib gents!

 Oh man, some of my acting is TERRIBLE! :( I seem to do pretty well except when I'm actually trying to act. :( Every one else is well awesome, though. Hooray for every one else!
Mark, this is really amazing, never thought it could look quite this good, or hang so well together for something we pretty much made up on the go. Much kudos, matey! :D How come Ryan don't get a front credit though? :P He's definetly a major character.
Favorite scenes - Marco's and Lorena's scenes, the Tipy bar scene climax, the finale(s).

Haha great work m0ds, I can't believe how quickly you've edited this all together. It all works really well -- great job.  If there's any way the sound can be rebalanced for the final version to bring out the voices more that'd be excellent.

That was amazing!  It was a real pleasure to see all the seemingly random scenes come together to make a damn impressive movie.  Of course, M0ds is a pretty great director, so it's no wonder it came out as quality as it did.

I'm eagerly awaiting the gag reel, we have some pretty funny stuff on there.  :)

One minor gripe: You misspelled my last name in the opening credits!  :P

So fun to see almost everyone in there. CJ's part as Quentin Jones was great and a surprise as I didn't know he was in it. Hell, there were many people I was surprised to see.

This was an awesome movie, and I'm in awe of everyone who helped make this movie in such a short notice! The acting was also brilliant, and there were only a few times where I actually noticed some "weird" moments with the script/acting. A very professional and absolutely entertaining movie! :D

I now also hate myself for not coming to mittens...

As I have media as my major, I can second this... I'm embarrassed on how long we spend on making movies that are absolutely horrible compared to this one-week work of awesome!

Ah oui oui, bon! Thanks for all the kind words about the film, and for your youtube ratings - which got it into the top 70 today, hehe!! Sorry about all the spelling mishaps of the title and certain names, these will be corrected in the next version -- though you and I have sealed its fate on YouTube really, I don't wanna take off that version as it now has all the comments and ratings!

This film came out of the blue on the first full day of Mittens. Despite Grundislav writing a cease & desist letter to me (which I will scan in due course) when I mentioned the idea to him...I ignored it and carried on :P My camera, which I've had since November, had been gathering dust. With all my friends at uni, and the girl I wanted to video naked with it in Spain, It hadn't been touched apart from one wedding video and some shots of my friends kids. BJ was not only a homage to mr Grundislav and Ben Jordan but also a big test for me to see how well the camera could perform. It's actually a fantastic little camera! Throughout the film there are quite a few focus issues which annoy me, but I can see how to rectifiy this in the future now. Also, the sound is abismal - which is a great shame. There's no mic input to the camera which is a big downer, but this helped me grasp what kind of sound it can do. And apart from that, I was filmually frustrated that I hadn't shot anything since summer 2007. 2008 is generally a bad year for me so it seemed the right thing to do..it will probably be the only movie by me this year!

Normally at Mittens I would concentrate on game-making but as my games were all pretty much running themselves at this point, I felt it better to make a movie. There were some game things I should really have done now that I look back on it, but, well as I said, since summer 2007 I've done some music, game stuff etc but no films. So it had to be done .^^

Indeed, it is hard - but I think that's part of the fun. I cracked up so many times because of his accent. Some of my favourite lines from Creed are "Aye, that manager gaj" -- is gaj a word? :p And of course the scene where I couldn't stop laughing, "On a Thursdee, the minger man would come round"... hehehe!!

Very kind, cheers Pete! Obviously a lot of short films are only 5 minutes or so because they condense great set dressing, lighting & all that jazz into a small product. But you know me, I prefer blockbuster style films :p And more importantly, have fun! BJ was just about having fun, that's all!

The acting was superb, I was amazed at how easily everyone got into their roles, and without rehearsing or anything - so well done and thank you peoples! Marco, it'd be nice to do another one at Miamittens -- but I didn't set out to Mittens en France thinking "I'm going to shoot a movie". I turned up, relaxed, drank booze and then realised the potential was there, and that it would be easy. In Miami, I might turn up, drink some booze, go to a beach and see some boobies -- and not want to make a film at all...

But saying that, I did discuss with Grundy whether he'd be happy for a BJ movie trilogy. It'd be something I'd like to do, as I know the 2nd and 3rd films will only be better. So it's definitely on the cards for next and future Mittens, however, I don't think it's something we should think about until Mittens. Maybe next year people can pull together to form more of a film-crew, ie, script-writing, producing (finding locations or asking owners of places if we can shoot a quick scene in their shop/strip club etc :P)

Thanks CJ! It just had to be done. I have a wedding video to edit one weekend but I wanted to get this done and online first, otherwise it might sit in the midsts of time for months (what with my current housing situation). The dialogue and levels will all be enhanced! When I edited I only had some in-ear headphones to hand, which suck for editing, but I'll take my round-ear headphones that I usually edit with next time which will help me get all the sound perfectemondo :) Great job as Percival Quentin Drunk!

Thanks Chrille! WMV does not do it justice though. The frame rate looks fantastic on TV or in an even LOWER res WMV, but in the one on youtube, meh, there only seem to be 4 frames or so. Still, it WAS a fantastic shot and much of that is owed to Miez and his superb model building skillz!! I hope you liked what I did with the horse, the sound effects...cos it was all I could do lol :D

Very kind of you to say Blajez with several lines through several letters of your name! Always a pleasure to see you at Mittens, and even better to get your acting on there too. You know I admire your crazy voice acting! I'm going to have to replay Fatman, there's one line in there you say that always cracks me up. Hopefully your short appearences in this movie will make up for your absence in Melt the Limit 3, and your tiny cameo in Melt the Limit 2 ;) But it can never compare to Melt The Limit (1) !!!!!

Joking aside, it was truly a great effort, considering how hard it is to pull off a film project like this. 30 mins of finished film requires an enormous amount of editing. And it turned out very professional in the end. The most apparent flaws are the bad lighting (which is hard to achieve without proper studio lamps) and the voices, which are too soft and often drowned by background noise.

The acting exceeded my expectations by miles, and many of the "actors" are really photogenic. Layabout was great to watch (maybe you should start cleaning tables near hollywood and see what happens?), Grund suited perfectly for his part and Davy with his original style and talk really made for an interesting side kick.
CJ was absolutely hilarious, Blazej and Dominika made a perfect free-spirited artsy couple and even the Dutchmen played their parts great.
Perhaps Eric pulled off the greatest acting feat, and his comical contribution really made the movie worthwhile.

Impressive work, all of you!

Stick it on a DVD-R and post it to me and I'll upload it if you want - I have a fast enough connection. Although you can make a 2-hour XviD be pretty much flawless quality at like 700MB.

And with x264 you can squeeze it to even smaller with similiar quality. So I think the filesize could be between 100-200M, that's a reasonable size to upload even on dialup ;)

I just have to say I'm quite impressed.  When you guys were mentioning there was a video filmed during mittens, I was expecting a piece of crap joke video with scenes lasting 5 minutes with no editing.  Bravo.

I really liked your directing technique.  The swing set and rope being in front of the characters was great.  And how Creed took the step off the 'roof' was a great shot.  If I hadn't looked at the mittens photos, I would have no choice but to believe he actually jumped off the roof instead of the porch.

I couldn't stop laughing with most of Grundi's scenes.  The adventure-style 'key in door with newspaper' idea was brilliant and funny.

I couldn't help but drop my jaw when I saw Layabout storm over to the Donkey with the racket, just picturing the owners or other guests watching him do that, might have gotten you guys into some trouble.  lol

Grundi and Layabout getting dirt thrown into their faces and their reactions was top notch.   :D

I loved it guys, great work, awesome acting!  --Looking forward to a sequel!

I was almost afraid to ask you if I could have a part (I don't think I had even talked to you yet), and then you told me I had a character who would reveal a big part of the plot. Having never acted in anything before (unless you count last year's Mittens video), I was a bit nervous, but seeing how much everyone laughed at the dailies put my fears to rest. Now my mom is showing it to everyone and there's nothing I can do. :)

And hey, I'll admit...I've watched it through twice today. Aww, Mittens...I'm missing everyone already. :}

My brain went spinning when I first read the rumors that a BJ movie existed, and though I at times felt that Ben wasn't really in character considering that he never stole random items from everybody, those thoughts disappeared when we got the newspaper-key-scene and the vast amount of notebook use. Yes, the sound could have been better, but apart from that everything was just awesome.

Mods: I want a DVD, but I don't want one for free (it's a noble gesture to give them away to everybody who participated in the film, but you'll be a broke man soon if you give free dvds to everybody in the forums who want one). So if you put me down for a DVD, I'll upload twenty pounds plus shipping to your Paypal account. Deal?

I won't go critiquing as this is not a c&c thread, but one technical thing did bother me :). You should have deinterlaced the material before scaling and encoding.

Just watched it! What a great short film that was! Mark - GREAT directing skills considering it was made in a few days.

And Gundislav, lol, you ARE Ben Jordan my friend! I found you really fun to watch. Everyone in it was great at their part too which made it more the worthwhile to watch it.

Hey folks, old thread, old film - but looking back it seems some people were at one point interested in a DVD version.

Unfortunately I can't produce a DVD for you but I would like to offer you the film in high quality AVI on USB so that you can make a DVD out of it if you want. The film has been updated a little - sound is better & some of the editing has been cleaned up.

Each copy would cost £20 and I can only do a limited amount right now. For £20 you'd get the movie in HQ, you'd get this on an 8gb USB stick which you can of course do with whatever you wish afterwards. I should be able to fit HQ out-takes and extend them onto the stick too, plus the DVD intro movie/trailer whichever you prefer to call it.

I'm offering this out so I can raise some funds and pay Hajo my website bill for hosting on the AGS server. If 10 people are willing to buy a copy, I'll be able to get the memory sticks and also pay Hajo. So, please, if anyone is still interested in obtaining the high quality version on USB, please say so here - and if enough people are interested, I'll give you the details on how to get it.

Grundislav seems okay with this, and perhaps, as it's on USB, any remaining space can be filled with some BJ movie & game extras :) But I'll need to talk to him about that first! :P

Brief update, the USB's im trying to get are out of stock, so I'm going to wait a week or so before placing an order to see if they come back in! If not it's not really a problem, the alternatives are only a little more expensive.

Also the commentary is going to happen over the next fortnight, so this will delay your memory sticks a little further I'm afraid dudes - but means the content will be uber-jordany!!
