I'm new to AGS and the forum - I did a search but couldn't find this so pardon me if this has been discussed.

I'm going through the tutorials and found an important typographic error in one of the examples.

It's on this page - http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/ags/tutorial/scripting/1/

QuoteDisplay(It's quite a large, ominous looking door.");

Yet right underneath in the recap it says this!

QuoteSo, did you remember these vital points:
Strings are surrounded by double-quote marks.

Good thing I DID remember that vital point or the tutorial would have broken my first game!

Khris

Granted, but the line is prominently displayed twice before, both times featuring both quote marks. And the scripting tutorial builds on the main tutorial, which adds the line to its example script, also without the error.
So while the error should of course be corrected, only a braindead moron would go ahead and deliberately break an already working command like that, just because it suddenly has a quote mark less, especially if it's so obviously a mistake, right...?

You make it sound like the error is extremely well hidden and can only be overcome by exceptional powers of perception...

djbriandamage

Thanks for the warm welcome. I'm gonna like it here.

Ummm, wow, that was kind of dickish. :-\

Welcome to the forums, djbriandamage! I'm sure one of the web people can correct this typo. :)

Andail

Yeah Khris, that was a bit unnecessary. Djbriandamage was just trying to be helpful. I think you owe him a better welcome than that!

Yeah, I guess I do, especially now with the secret police watching my every move.

Edit: And just in case anybody had missed it: joining a community by pedantically pointing out a missing quote mark, THAT'S "dickish".

LimpingFish

While sarky, where is the direct insult in Khris's reply?

We should, of course, be welcoming to new forumites, and while the error highlighted is technically valid, the initial post, under the circumstances, is hilariously pedantic. Perhaps on purpose?

My only intent was to help other noobs like me who rely on the tutorial to do what we love.

I don't want to get off on the wrong foot so thank you all very much for your welcome.  I really look forward to chatting and learning from you.

I think Khris just automatically assumes at this point that all new forum members are idiots due to his experiences in the Beginners Forum.

One might remember that the internet, and indeed our forum, should not be a place to scores one's ego points over those who perhaps might be less skilled.

AGA

"Only a braindead moron" is being a dick. Don't do this. Also, please don't report multiple posts in the same thread, djbriandamage. Other than that, welcome!
