It really takes time...

... to create an AGS-Game. Do you sometimes think that this time could be spent somehow or somewhere else? like reading a good book or learning a language (just for example)

sometimes i think: c'mon, you could have been learning for the english test for 2 hours. instead, you're sitting in front of this damn thing and draw pixel-guys.

i wish i could freeze time, in which i do all the stuff i really enjoy, but which takes time

give me you opinions

As long as you draw a line as to how much time your spending on it, vs. real life. I see no problem. Is reading a book more important than the act of creating it? I don't think so. So making a game is important too. The act of creation is important. If you want to pass your test, than surely you should study for it. And if you want to make a game, then you should make one. It's all about your desires.

Reading a book is consuming.  Creating a computer game (for instance) is producing.

I'd much rather be a producer than a consumer.  Besides who says reading is time well spent over creating something?

I agree with Mills -- gotta balance the two out.

Consume information and produce creative ventures in equal amounts.

i agree with all of the above,....but i get the impression(from your post) that you don't really really really feel like making games instead of other things.....!....am i wrong?(i hope so.)

King_Crimson

i really enjoy making games, more than reading a book or something. but maybe i have the paranoia that time spent in front of a computer is lost time (which is true if youre playing computer games  <-- my opinion). and my parents also say: you could do other things than creating this game

danny*

sorry to say but,if you really think that playing games is a waste of time,...then why bother to make one? ;)

I think you are asking wrong questions here. Instead of "what *should* i do?", ask yourself what you *like* to do. If you enjoy making games, then it's certainly not a waste of time.
Life is short.. and it's yours ;)

Also, some things that may seem as a waste of time (or not important) at the moment, may become your way of earning money someday.

maybe i've expressed myself wrong: i do like playing computer games, i do like creating computer games, I like the whole world of computer games. but this world can also take too much of your time away. you have to find a balance between playing games and doing other stuff. unfortunately, playing games does not prepare you for other things, like a job or social competence, so you have to do something, which prepares you or enriches your experience. i hope, you are able to understand what I mean. I only say, that you shouldn't get lost in the world of games, although it is very invitingly.   ^^

This is an interesting question King Crimson, I think if you want to make a full on game, time is no issue, just do it at the pace that allows you to do it, not neglecting more important things, like communicatation (not via internet, person to person physically) family (if you have one) and friends (if you haven't neglected them)

with that out of the way, and you have free time outside of School, Work, University or other form of education, and you still want to continue with a game project, means you have the right desire to create a game, then it is just part of your life as many others around here,

the longer it takes to make a game, generally means your lazy, have a major social life, or are just serious about making something you've always wanted,

good luck with your pursuits, and may your desire win out in the end

Edit: There is no rush around here, patience is a virtue

Making a game should never take over your life, but it's a nice hobby to have as something to do in your spare time.

Sure, we all need to go to work or school, and we all go out and socialize in the evenings and weekends.

But you don't go out *every* night, do you? And what do most people do when they sit at home? Watch TV, of course.

If it's a choice between sitting as a couch potato in front of the latest pap being dealt out to us by the media, or doing something creative like making your own game, I know what I'd choose.

if you think about it, a lot of the people that use AGS have already learned another language...
i spend more time on irc than i do on anything else, sometimes i wish i spent more time thinking up plots for games, i'd much rather make a game than spend hours on end talking about nothing inparticular, i just find irc easier i suppose...
