What with this being the month that Mittens is taking place, I think it's now time to start gathering intelligence as far as the next mittens is concerned. Right now there are no secure plans, as nothing other than mere chit chat has been passed between fellow USA AGSers. But here is what I think what will be happening...

It'll end up being on the east coast, making a central point that takes less time all around for everyone outside the US to get here.

It'll probably be in the months of June/July

It'll be anywhere from 1week to 10days

That's about it. I know of a campsite near where I live that I could probably get everyone in for however long, but I'm not sure on price yet (it's got a ropes course, and I think we can get served meals for breakfast/lunch/dinner but still this might be a variable on how much people would be willing to spend). And as we still haven't determined a location for it, it's still up for grabs. It won't necessarily be on the east coast, but I feel that's the best route.

So that said...I make a bid for it to be held in Florida.

When we get more bids everyone will vote on it.

TerranRich

I say it should be on the east coast, ,although getting time off from work for Mittens 2004 might be tough...I'm already planning on going to Portugual between July and August for 2 weeks. I can't ask for TOO much time off. If it's close enough to Massachusetts,  I could go for a day or two.

:)

Sylpher

Wherever it may be, come hell or highwater I shall be there. I kinda hoped for NYC just because I mean its the big apple...But setting isn't a big deal for me. As well as long as a jack in the box or Carls Jr is near by I am feed for the trip.

Anyone else who may be going that are in the Southwest and would not like to travel to far off lands alone let me know perhaps we can work something out...(Even, Pesty..??...Cornjob!?)

Squinky

And here I sit, way over on the oppisite side of this country...bah...

scotch

I hoped for NYC too ._.

It's closer ;)

MrColossal

just to clear something up

saying NYC is misleading

there's no way to camp in new york city, New York especially upstate is great for camping
"This must be a good time to live in, since Eric bothers to stay here at all"-CJ also: ACHTUNG FRANZ!

scotch

no! I want to camp on a building roof or in an alley.

But otherwise Florida or anywhre will do.

juncmodule

I'm really excited about this. ;D

I hope we do not decide on NYC. That sounds like a bad idea. Rooftops and alleys and all.

Florida sounds okay but, what about someplace a little more west? How far can/will people travel?

Personally, I am going to try my best to go no matter where it is. Places like Florida and NY are a little "touristy". In the summer going to those places is going to be pretty expensive. I'm really lacking in suggestions....perhaps we could do Gettysburg or some hokey "American" place.

What about those overseas? At least those that are going to try to come...what piece of America do you want to see? I would hate for someone to come all the way to America and not see anything but us ugly American AGSers.

eh,
-junc

MillsJROSS

I don't live in the touristy part of Florida, I live in norther florida. There's really nothing to see where I live. And, the NY thing, I'm sure not all areas of NY or touristy either.

I think I'd only go as far as to say the eastern side of the central zone would be as close to the west as I would get. But it's all up to everyone.

-MillsJROSS

evilspacefart

am i the only one in Seattle?

m0ds

I know myself and a few others were wondering if it could be tied in to fit around E3 in someway. I.e., the week before E3 or something. That way at the end of it we could all go to E3 and then go home.

;)
m0ds

Andail

There is a chance I might show up. If Leks comes to sweden now, I've promised to do my best to be in USA next year.
I wouldn't want to miss any mittens anyway.
Of course, it's too big a deal to make any vows, but I'll certainly do my best

cpa'ge

I guess I'm the only one here who was hoping west coast

Dave Gilbert

Yay!  Mittens USA!  :-)

Heh, coming to NYC sounds good to me, considering I live there.  The less I have to move my butt the better!  There are YMCAs and such to stay in, and I'd be happy to put some people up if they need it.  But I live in a 500 square foot studio (and that includes closets and bathroom), so I don't know how practical that would be.

Camping in upstate NY is an excellent idea, Eric.  Lots of... mountains and stuff.  I really know next to nothing about the area.  And if you're keen to see the Big Apple, we could always take a day trip.

Florida.  Hm.  I love Florida.  In the WINTER, I love Florida.  During the summer... I dunno.  It's bone-meltingly hot there, so I've been led to understand.  Grundy would be the one to ask.

-Dave

Unilin

Somewhere northerly is better for me, not only because it's closer but because I am intollerant of heat.  Upstate New York sounds good.

Nothing in the universe is certain, probably.

MillsJROSS

I'd just like to point out that New York in the summer is hotter than Florida in the summer. Florida has a reputation for being hot ALL the time, because it's closer to the equator. But if you already know that the earth is on a tilt, than you'd realise that the tilt, during summer, would bring the northern cities/states closer to the sun.

I'm interested in going to NY, though, as I've never been. And it seems just as good an idea to me, as long as we have someone who can get everything up there.

-MillsJROSS

Timosity

Typical New Yorker, can't move outside manhattan, j/k

how about Kansas, isn't that like the center of the country, equal for everyone, maybe Dorothy is still there.

Well it's probably Easier for people outside the US for it to be relatively close to a major city like New York or LA,

How about Las Vegas, we could all become millionaires

Or somewhere in Florida sounds sweet, or is anyone from southern California, I've heard it's pretty nice there too.

I have no idea if I could make it or not, too far away at this stage

bspeers-o-rama

Relight and I both live in Canada on the West coast, while Rode and Dragonrose (I think) live on the East.  I'm thinking they would prefer the east, but I can't speak for them.  Obviously, because I live here, I would love to see mittens on the West Coast, so I could go.  Like Seattle, Portland, or (dare I say it) Victoria BC! We've even got a "Helm's Inn" and our mayor is AL LOWE!!!!.  We used to have a "Bargain Quest" store, but ironically, it died off.

If I can afford it and I'm not doing something else equally important (hah!) I'll bring my lowly self over to tha' east and scare all the natives.  Literally.  St. Regis Mohawk Tribe, look out!  Assuming we don't all have to wear american "Freedom" ribbons and scorn the French. (Durn that there J. L).

Plus I will bore you all with my complex and vaguely irritating juggling skills! Howzabout that for an invitational.

bspeers-not "logged"

Oh, and just reminding all that Cornjob lives in Hawaii... for future reference and all.

m0ds

East coast if you want people from this side of the world to show up, West Coast if you Americans are being all private and fiendish.

Does that mean you've nominated yourself for hosting Mittens 2004, Mills? ;)

m0ds

Matt Brown

Ive seen most of the states east of me, (ohio), and if its camping and traveling ease, I recomend upstate new york, although carolina might not be such a bad idea. Things are cheaper there, but its would be hot, and I dont think thats closer for anybody except those FAGS (florida AGSers :))

I doubt I'll be going if its out of state, which it will be, since my parents arent too keen on my going camping with a bunch of dudes that I oinly know from teh internet.

??

Isn't E3 in LA? Or does it change? I'm confused. I think that is a good idea but, if it would prevent some overseas AGSers from coming...not good idea.

As far as Americans going back and forth about East/West coast...Come on guys!! AGSers are coming from across the ocean and you can't cross a few states!? Show some dedication here.

Bspeers: Yeah, I'm East coast. And you forgot Unilin! He's in Ottawa.

I'm definetly if favour of an East coast Mittens- New York State I might be able to make it to.

Oooo.. a girl coming to Mittens. Scary.

m0ds

And I heard you were having an affair with James Slaughter ;)

A NY Mittens would sooooo rock.

m0ds

Sylpher

Yeah, E3 is held in california and there is a few problems with that. A. Money and B. you have to be a member of the asscociated press or apart of the gaming industry to even think about getting a pass..Unless you have good friends in good places.

The reason why East coast is ideal is because as of the first discussion about a Us mittens most of the Us AGSers lived on the east coast...at that time about 30-40 were center/east coast and about 5 were center/west coast. I have no idea what the numbers are now but I am pretty sure east coast is still winning.

MillsJROSS

I think, at the moment, the general consensus is eats coast, NY. But I'd like to hear numbers from either side. Still, the point in the east coast is to get a majority of the AGSers who don't live in the U.S.

QuoteDoes that mean you've nominated yourself for hosting Mittens 2004, Mills?

Not really...I just wanted to get some planning going, before someone else perhaps stole it away from the U.S. (Like the aussie's, because they have a strong claim too).  I do want to play a part in it's comming together, though. As I've not been able to go to the Mittens last year or the upcomming one.

Like Seattle, Portland,
Everybody loves Portland!
But since the east coast would be more convienient for about 99% of AGSers, I guess that a west-coast mittens will have to wait for another year.
Some day...

TerranRich

I too nominate upstate New York, which is where Lake George is (where I recommended earlier on). i live only like 5-6 hours away. :)

I want to go, I do, but I have a lot of things barring my way. Besides having a paranoid father who thinks everyone is out to get me (which is only true 90% of the time), I'm not sure how I would PAY for the trip. I don't know where I'll be or what I'll be doing a year from now, job and school wise, so I really can't promise anything. I'm looking at some schools on the east coast and by that time I would probably be over there already, which would be just dandy indeed. Unfortunately everything is unsure. Phooey patooey.

I mainly want to go so that Dragonrose won't be the only girl. And I want Dragonrose to go so I wont be the only girl.

...'Cause I don't know if you guys are out to get me.

* Pesty  eyes everyone suspiciously.

Edit: If it were in Vegas, the chances of me being able to go would be greater, because it's much closer to me.

Mills, it was already decided that 2004 would be in the USA ;)

2005 on the other hand has to be somewhere paradisic, like, hawaii or spain or something. ANYWAY. Lets not jump ahead of ourselves. 2003 hasn't passed yet.

m0ds

bspeers1000

East Coast is good, regardless of whether I can go or not.  Upstate New York sounds workable.

Though to be clear, it's probably farther from the West Coast of Canada to the East Coast of USA than from England to New York.  And possibly more expensive, considering dollar values.

Whatever.  As long as I have a chance to finally get that pesky Pesty.

Sluggo

Just to throw another suggestion in, didn't someone mention New Hampshire a while ago? I can't remember who.

MillsJROSS

I wasn't aware of it. Last year I thought we were going to plan for a Mittens USA 2003, but it ended up in Sweden. I was just taking the initiative. But Hawai is USA, too, m0ds. Anyway we wouldn't want to go there, I hear it's too crowded with tourists. But we'll get to planning that next year, I'm sure.

Pesty - There's still plenty of time before people even need to know who is absolutely comming and who isn't. So no rush...you have a year to save money, and convince your dad. If you don't succeed, put that money into next year, or some other equaly enjoyable trip.

QuoteThough to be clear, it's probably farther from the West Coast of Canada to the East Coast of USA than from England to New York. And possibly more expensive, considering dollar values.

Yes, that's probably true, but England isn't the only people we're trying to attract here. And I'm not sure of the rates over sea flights from Europe versus the flights from Canada.

We also have to put into consideration, that there are more Europeans than Canadians.

-MillsJROSS

Pumaman

Yes, well, as m0ds says, let's not get ahead of ourselves - Mittens 2003 might turn into an orgy of hate and destruction, starting a chain of events which leads to the eventual implosion of these forums.

Which would kinda mean Mittens 2004 got cancelled.

Allright, who's been leaking information?

evenwolf

I don't think there should be much debate of where in the U.S. Mittens should be because I think the greatest factor is:

Does an AGSer live anywhere closeby AND is he/she willing to organize the event?

So Northern Florida or upstate New York are both ideal locations, provided airport travel and all that, but is eric, dave gilbert, mills, grund, whoever willing to take some responsibility on the ground?

I'm just saying- it's probably not a good idea to hold mittens somewhere none have us have ever been before- like Chunky, Mississippi...
well actually.. Chunky is kind of nice that time of year.

I vote for where the balls is.

And if there are no balls I vote Austin TX, because it's the live music capital of the country, hotter than a homeless dragqueen's armpit, and I'll blow tons of shit up for you guys.  Oh yeah, and the girls..

But hopefully there will be some eat coast balls

May I sugest Iowa? Iowa has plenty of camp sites, a few gambling boats ;), hotels for cheap rates, flying here I would think for be cheaper and its in the middle of everybody. I would love to go but it would be hard if it was far from here. We could aways have a travling across the USA tour or something where we pick everyone up in a van or bus. Just some ideas...

Matt Brown

hmm, LGM is in Iowa isnt he?

the problem with Iowa is that it might be too far into the midwest. if cheap midwestern airfair is what people were looking for, then going too much farther then illinios would be a problem.

it was forecast to be hotter in florida than it was in new york EIGHT out of the next TEN days, and it's hotter NOW too.

flordia is sinful hot in the summer, on the plus side, if you camp next to a beach maybe  in north central florida, it would be pretty cool.

man, its hot almost everywhere around the east in the summer! Michigan, northen Ohio, pennsylvania, Minnisota, states that normally aren't very hot, are cooking right now. The weather reports say only about 91, but the northern states have huminity that is a bi-atch. I think new york is the same way. is going to feel really really hot wheverever you go. I would try to book a campsite within 30 min. of a beach or something.

Scummbuddy

Yeah,  I live in the center of the East Coast, good ol' Maryland or America-in-minature, as its sometimes called.  There are a lot of nice places around here to mess around in, but really, I think either Florida where Gloves is currently being held, pretty much everyday probably, or, as it sounds like New York State could be a good for others.

I, for one, will be one of the first to sign up for an East Coast Mittens.

Personally, I feel that if it were held in Florida, South Florida would be the place, as it's more shall we say "populated" than the northern areas of the state. Of course, that would mean I'd probably have to host, which is not something I think I can do. I'd love it if it were on the East Coast, especially the northern area since it's been ages since I was up there, plus the scenery is pretty, and much better for camping were we going to do that.

And, contrary to popular belief, you can't camp for days on the beach.
