Title: OROW: Dates decided :D
Post by: Bulbapuck on Sat 29/05/2010 16:03:54
It's been quite some time since the last OROW competition. And I must say, I really like a lot of the games that have come out of previous OROWs. So I think it might be time for another one :D

So I decided to make this thread to see if there is any interest to start one soon?

Also: I wouldn't mind hosting it, but as I'm relatively new to the forums I don't know the general procedure of things. Anyone who's experienced one care to explain this?

EDIT:
The OROW is happening, and it's happening the 19th to the 25th of July.

I'm game. I haven't released anything and I've been here for 4 years so it's about bloody time I make something.

I doubt I'll be able to join the OROW, I could host it or co-host it, or help you out, but I've no idea who actually needs to be informed. I'm guessing Andail, would be the one to be officially asked. I suggest starting a small pole to see if actually people would really join. Then if you have about enough interest, you can really start it.

Who am I to be asked anyway? :-\

A few months ago I would have totally been ready to make an OROW game, but lately I've gotten myself into some team projects that definitely take away from my game creating time.

Yeah, this is basically what I'm doing with this thread. I want to know if there is enough interest to start it up.

@Saberteeth: Awesome ;D

I was talking about this on IRC the other day. I'm game, as long as it is soon.

Soon, but not next week as my final exams are at that time and I'd hardly have time to do anything.

I'd love to, and might even be able to.
Holidays?

Curse these pending exams!

My exams ended yesterday which is why I posted this (whoooooo! summer break ;D)

But there seems to be some interest, so I'll try to start it up soon.

But we could probably wait a few weeks. How about the 14th of June to the 20th?

That's perfect for me.

I'd participate in an OROW in July or August, but definitely not in June.

I second to that.

Bulbapuck has my blessing.
Starting it in two weeks sounds like a fine plan, considering people are probably busy with exams and stuff now.

Only July is good for me.  :'(

Alright, so there is definately interest. And I have Andail's blessing :) So this is happening ;D

The only thing left is to decide the dates. Now, the reason I suggested June was because I cannot host July nor August. We could move it up one week, but that would then be it. I'm sorry, but that's just how it is.

Fact is; I highly doubt that I'll be able to find dates that suits everybody. So I suggest that those dates are final.

But it is movable. So please post your opinions, if you want to join.

I just realised that I might be able to host late July, is interest high for me to move it 'til then?

Interest doesen't seem too high with the current dates...

That would certainly be better for me, as it's after my exams.

However, the further we get into the future, the less certain we can be of whether or not we can participate.

As it stands, am I interested for late July? Yes I am :)

I don't get why it is so quiet in here. I've been waiting for so long to participate in one of these. Some of the best AGS games were OROW entries. Well, I hope I can find the time and energy to participate, I sure want to. :)

The new date works better for me too btw.

Late July sounds good to me too. What is it with this two year gap that seems to have become the standard? We should change the name to OROWETY (...Every Two Years) or how about BOROW (Biennial One Room One Week).

Hopefully the next OROW will be before 2010 :P

If you keep waiting until everyone is satisfied with the date you'll never get anywhere.  Just a pick a date, hold to it, and people who want to enter will enter like they have every time before.  Problem solved!

I know, this is why I probably shouldn't have suggested July in the first place. But I did, and it seems like there is a lot more interest to have it in July. Hence it would feel odd to start it up tomorrow.

Which is why the dates are now final:
The OROW will be the 19th to the 25th of July :D

Hope to see you then.

Are teams allowed? just like a team of 2?

Sadly, I'll be in Toronto that very week, but I'll certainly be cheering everyone on!
Spoiler

And Calin, everyone knows what you're insinuating. You can just ask, "Can Ben and I team up again?"

Sorry I didn't realise I had to declare everything.

Asking if teams are allowed is a perfectly legitimate thing to do so stop being so damn snarky all the time.

In case there's no clear rule on the team-question I'd like to express how much I favor "no" as an answer. One Room One Week implies the shortest time restriction there is apart from one day or one hour games which are really mostly joke thingies. If two or more people work on these, the level of quality would rise dramatically but the challenge would be lower.

Sorry, I snark. It's what I do. Besides, you guys make a great team and I'm looking forward to what you and everyone else makes when I get back from my trip.

I do see your point. However, I believe that working as a team under such major time restrictions is quite a challenge in itself.

So yes, I'll allow teams. Unless I find some rule that clearly states that OROWs should not be entered by teams, which I haven't found yet.
Title: Re: OROW: Dates decided :D

I thought the only rule for OROW was "One room, one week"?
Title: Re: OROW: Dates decided :D

Rules from the third OROW:

QuoteHere are the rules:
-  You must make an AGS game within the next week.
-  You should work alone, but may find one person to help you if you need to.

So getting someone to help with the graphics or music or whatever you yourself suck at has been allowed in the previous competitions. I can't remember if the rules were different last time since curiously no teams entered. It might also explain why I tried to compose music for my game. (Thankfully, no one has died from it thus far.)

My computer should be back up and running by then so i'll definitely have a go at entering this. A focused exercise is just what I need to get me moving. Good stuff.

Well, there is a difference between someone helping, and teaming up. Mainly, a team can brainstorm on things, someone helping will only focus on making things and not inventing them. Most OROW games in the past have been the brainchild of a single author I guess. I have no idea how much it would and should make a difference. :)

Well this is embarrassing, I'm making a one room game right now. But I won't be able to finish in a week.

Teams of 2 have never been forbidden in OROW, so to run it in a proper manner that should hold (scotch and I worked on Blackmail In Brooklyn, Ghormak and Helm on Gladiator Quest, and so on).  Likewise, OROW never disallowed entries with more than one room, the whole one room thing was there to encourage people to start small and complete the project in the length of time given.  Topics can be suggested but are not required.  OROW is and always has been a very loose effort to encourage people to make a game even if they haven't before, so just keep that in mind.

In fact, I'd rather see the team limitations removed entirely because they have no bearing whatsoever on the true goal of OROW, which is to make a game in a week.  Who cares if you and your friends get together and have lots of fun throwing together content and another guy works on it alone?  If you feel it's unfair it's because you have a wrong view of what OROW is about and should correct that right away by playing all the old OROW entries.  Doctor's orders.

I don't have any past experience of OROW to draw on so you can safely ignore my ramblings, but I have to agree with ProgZmax.

Having worked on non-AGS games as part of a team a few times before i've found it can actually be harder the more people that are involved. There is the benefit of a larger skillset/shared workload of course, but it's harder to maintain a creative vision unless someone really takes charge.

I have no problem with team entries being in a OROW if it encourages them to finish a game.

Time to take my medicine..

Title: Re: OROW: Dates decided :D

The OROW starts on 19th of July to the 25th. Developers have one week to create an entry. Then anonymously send it to the competition's host (Bulbapuck I pressume), who then hosts it on a different site (for apparent reasons). And then the public voting shortly begins, after which the entries stop being anonymous and winner is announced.
