Hi everyone,

I was wondering if this is the right place to post my question:

Does anyone of you know if there is an engine availabe to make games in the Cryo-Adventure style?

I mean the 360 degree - panning and then using a *.avi video to go from one picture to the next. I am sure you know what I mean: games like Atlantis 1 - 3 or the "Journey Man Project 3" used this technology.

Can anyone help?

well, you could make it in ags, you should only have panorama picture, and use it for background. I don't know the code exactly, but you should make that when the pointers is like at x-coordinate 20 that the screen is rolling to the left.... and when it's at the end, it should be reset to the other side of the panorama picture. You can play .avi movies everytime you for example click on a certain hotspot in the picture... to make it look like you walk forward. If I'm making this sort of picture im using bryce, wich is a 3D-editor, but goto ulead.com for some good programs on photoediting! ;) But yes, its possible, only needs lots of script

ThunderStorm

Adventure Maker (www.adventuremaker.com) is said to be quite a good engine when it comes to first person adventures. You can display AVI movies, I'm not sure about 360 degree views though. The sad part is that they want money for it.

Minimi

well, I was inspired with your post to go check on Bryce, (the app. I work with) about panorama support, and you can make some cool panorama pictures with bryce! ;) You can buy the program for only $80! And that's really cheap for such an easy powerfull tool! Goto www.corel.com for more info! or www.brycetech.com! I don't know if there is any demo available, but if there is, you should really check it out!

Thanks for your replies!

to Minimi:

I am sure you can create the effect of 360 degree in AGS (with loads of scripting as you mentioned). However, I think, AGS is just not built for that task. It would require high resolution bitmaps and AGS can't handle them right now. And scrolling diagonal seems pretty impossible to me in AGS.

to ThunderStorm:

oh yes, Adventure Maker - I love this engine: you can even create the rippling water effect using pixel shifting - great stuff! But there is ONE big problem (correct me if I am wrong): you can only draw hotspots that are rectangular!!!!! And that is (at least for me) a huge negative point! And a point to not use this engine! Don't you think so? If I have a ball in AGS I draw the hotspot as a circle and the cursor only changes if the player hovers exactly over the ball. With Adventure Maker , I have to draw a rectangular bounding box around the ball and so the cursor changes even if the player hasn't touched the ball yet!
I really hope they fix that in a future release. Because apart from that the engine is really good.

Wow Minimi you just posted again :-)

Thanks for looking into your prog for me.

I own (a legal copy !!!!) of Bryce 3D myself and I have already used it in combination with Quicktime VR to create 360 panorama images. However read what I just posted and you will see my problem.

Minimi

yes i see it, hey, could you help me with this? I've got ofcourse also the legal copy of bryce, and I was wondering. I made an panorama and saved it as quicktime, and used an tutorial for it, because I never made panorama, but when I create the panorama and render it, and look for the file... it just does not excist! Do you know how this could have come?

TheMagician

I am sorry Minimi.

I just created a Test - Quicktime VR Panorama with my Bryce 5.01 and it worked fine for me.

Are you sure you have the Quicktime VR correctly installed? Normally it should be installed with the normal Quicktime player.

What versions of Bryce and Quicktime do you use?

Minimi

bryce5.0 and a very old version of quicktime.. iguess thats it... im going to update quicktime and try again ;)

I can't think of a way to do 360 panoramas in ags.. you could make a room scroll with the effect of it turning round 360.. wouldn't be that convincing though and you won't really be able to look up and down.
