Hey all,
Here's the work I've done on the new AGS Awards website -- one more easy to manage and to build upon:
http://www.sylpher.com/AGSAwards
I've still got to do voting information (i.e. registered game lists, voting pages, etc) but this is pretty much how the site works.
Also, I need someone who has web-based programming knowledge, because I need voting pages for nominations and winners.
If anyone would like to help me with this, I'd be most appreciative.
Thanks,
DG
EDIT: Also, please tell me if you see any mistakes.
If you want somebody to do some graphics (customized for fast speed) I am interested in participating.
Probably something resembing a traditional ceremony, or we could even go for a hi-tech one, your choice. New logos, banners etc.
I could also work on a newer "costume" image with the latest characters released.
Just drop a line if you are interested and I'll post some example ideas.
Good work DG, looks much better without all the tripod banners now :)
If you like, I could whip up something to tie the voting page into the forum user database, ensuring each forum member can only vote once.
GhostGR: I'd be honoured if you'd do some updated graphics -- I've seen your work and it's great.
Feel free to work on whatever you can and I'll incorperate them into the webpage.
CJ: That'd be great -- When someone volunteers for the voting page, we'll implement that idea.
Great! Looking forward to the next AGS awards.
I wanna get my final versions uploaded before nominations begin! Will this weekend be too late?!?!?! I REALLY wanna give my babies the best possible chance this time around!

Well, since the web page says that nominations start on the 1st January, I'll leave you to work out whether this weekend is soon enough... ::)
Great! I'll get started right away.
I hope that my next BIG game, will be finished before the end of 2004!
There's a link to 'voting' in one of the pages, but the link at the top of each page is inactive. You can also click on a page's link at the top even when you're on the page in question (although that's only a minor design flaw)
Good stuff DG! Simplistic and easy to read and navigate :) Me likes.
AGA, that voting link you're refering to is the rules for voting, not the actual voting page.
As for clicking the page's link even when you're on the page in question, that's a VERY minor flaw -- so much so, that's it's not even really a flaw.
But it's good that you're keeping your eye open!
I wouldn't mind whipping up a voting module ...
The only snag is that unless slypher.com allows for ColdFusion the actually voting part would have to be hosted on my server. Which I don't mind.
Here's an example of a poll system I created for a client: Cargo Guy Poll System (http://www.tydenbrammall.com/cargoguy)
:: scroll down to the bottom and hit 'View Results' to see how it displays the results. Please don't hit the Submit button 'cause I don't want to scew their actual results! ::
Obviously we wouldn't want the results displayed until the winners are announced. But it would work the same way as this (just not showing who is winning!)
If you're interested I'd be happy to do it!

Darth, CJ just IMed me and offered to do it, but if he gets called away on an emergency, would you like to be my back-up?
You may now call me Mr. Backup (http://www.twin-design.com/fafmb/graphics/smilies/smilies_wide.gif)
If something comes up and CJ can't do it just let me know and I'll get it done!
Say, DG, I was wondering whether there will be a best voice acting award....
Darth:

I love it when a plan comes together!
Vel:
Depends on whether there's enough interest.
I'll check how many games are talkies in the next week or so and see if there's support.
If there is, it'll go like this -- The company behind each talkie game will select a voice artist for nomination, and the community will nominate three finalists from this list.
However, it's not concrete yet.
Great stuff DG, very basic so far, but it's a good template, and I'm sure the other volunteers will help make it superb.
Vel, in last years award there was this:
Best Sound Effects in an AGS Game
Winner: Calsoon 2 - Christian Blomqvist, Daniel Macpherson, Courtland Leksutin, Mark Lovegrove, Andreas Slotte, Petter Ljungqvist, and Johan Lindgren
(I never played it with the sound pack, so I assume they were the voices, or maybe just the farting)
Even though it wasn't specifically for speech, so it's still possible to get an award in that category.
personally I don't think there's enough games with voices to warrant an award, but I guess the general interest will decide.

I've changed the rules so that it's only includes sound effects engineering -- no awards for vocal cast.
However, I might change it again to include one voice artist only from a game -- I say this because it's overwhelming and a little unfair to have this big list of nominees for one game as opposed to the single sfx engineers.

"Blah blah blah... Shut the fuck up, idiot!" 8)
Seriously though... what a shitty site design. Looks like it was made by a 12 year old... :P
Yes, and I trust the opinions of people who anonymously log in without providing any way to rectify such "shitty web design".
Yep, you've convinced me -- I'm giving up this whole stupid AGS Awards things, seeing as how everyone else here has praised or given constructive criticism for my work, yet you've told me to "shut the fuck up" and that my web design "Looks like it was made by a 12 year old" so of course I would listen to that.
Goodbye everyone -- I'm giving up the whole AGS thing cause some pussy-assed anonymous troll retard fuckwit told me I have "shitty site design" skills and, obviously, he knows what he's talking about!
For best plot in 2002, the Winner was Kings Quest 2 VGA Remake - Daniel Stacey. I think that remakes should be barred from being nominated (For most awards) because quite clearly, the person who remade the game didn't design the plot/story. Just thought I'd point that out :)
And, jeeze, DG, calm down. It's just a retard. Let it be...
The thing with KQ2 remake was that the whole story was rewritten-- It's practically a new game with the same structure.
For example, it fleshed-out the Dracula and Witch characters.
And I am calm, Yuf -- That's why I've announced my RETIREMENT FROM AGS FOREVER!!!
STFU CONVINCED ME!!!
Also, don't call them 'retards' cause that derogitory.
Call them 'dick stroking poofter fucks'.
The web design is actually quite good. It is fast and easy to navigate.
I am still working on the graphics (and finding ways to fit everything in the given frames)..
I will upload something soon for feedback in this thread. :)
Groovy.
And you just convinced me to return to the world of AGS, Ghost.
Sorry, STFU, but it looks like you don't get your wish! (HAR HAR HAR LOSER!!! :P )
DG, why will only three games be nominated for best music?
Because if it was two, that would be stupid.
Of course.
How about the following categories:
Best sub-game:
For any adventure games that have an action sequence or any kind of sub-game, to encourage these to be good, too!
Best script:
If game-makers coded up an incredibly handy function or sequence for their game, they can publish it so that others can benefit and learn and this would allow them to be entered for this award. This would encourage people to share any cool scripting they did rather than keep it to themselves.
Most technically helpful:
Person who has helped out others a lot in the forums or on IRC, be it on scripting or art or music
It seems to me that the awards could maybe have a "constitution" that says they are to encourage innovation and excellence in all parts of the AGS community and encoyrage people to help each other, too. Or maybe it could say that its just a mutual appreciation exercise... ;)
If the awards are trying to encourage "good" things to be done with AGS, then maybe a best voice pack would be good, as it might encourage more people to do them. Even if there are only 2 or 3 games with them a year, that effort should be rewarded.
What do you folks think?
Best AGS stuff coverage - what do you think about that?
Vel reminded me that I forgot:
Best game written by a Bulgarian
Best backgrounds in a game with "forever" in the title
Best character art in a MAGS game with two sets of double letters in the title
:P
I was half serious, my good man.

Too specific -- not all games have sub-games, so we'll have to separate/identify the ones with sub-games and the ones that don't.
And I (nor anyone else, for that matter) do not have the time to play that many games.

We already have a best scripting award in the technical section -- if the designer wishes to make their script available for public domain, that's their decision.

A lot of the times, that's what the lifetime achievement award is for.

We already have a set of rules, which pretty much acts as a constitution.
Besides, I don't want to get too over-the-top in rules, constitutions and such things or else the fun gets sucked out of it.

Half-serious?
Riiiiiight.
You've already asked me about this and I've told you why we're not having it.
Don't ask again.
Listen, before everyone starts swamping me with category ideas, listen up:
I HAVE NO PLANS TO ADD ANY NEW CATEGORIES THIS YEAR EXCEPT MAYBE FOR VOICE ACTING, WHICH DEPENDS ON THE AMOUNT OF GAMES WITH VOICE PACKS.
Sure, you can suggest, but it'd have to be something VERY crucial.
How about best FPS?
How about "Best Awards Organiser"?
Or even "Best Awards Organiser who's signature still points to the old awards website?"
I am dealing with retards. ::)
;D
Best retard?
How's about 'best member called AGA'?
How about we have a seprate awards thingy for member stuff. Like best member, best new member, funniest member, best one liner, etc.?
Quote from: SSH on Fri 28/11/2003 16:33:18
Best retard?
Not practical. It's just not feasable to have categories that would accept the amount of nominations that would need.
evil: that's what the Ergos are, surely.
Duh. I think I might still be a little intoxicated... :P
Ok, here is an "in-development" screen.
I am not happy yet with it. I will have to re-check it in the morning to see what's wrong.
I think I'll drop the curtains and switch to "flash made" animated spotlights (with little technicians running arround.. hmm)
So far it works nicely in most resolutions, and it fits top of the original nicely..
more tommorrow. :P
Sweet Jesus!
That looks cool; And by cool, I mean totally sweet.
And that what I call REAL ULTIMATE POWER!!

You know DG, he has a point there :P
I have no idea what you're talking about.
Darn yabb and its updating-previous-posts feature :P

Again we see there is nothing you can possess which I cannot take away, Jones.
After checking it again, I decided to switch the magentas to reds.. I've also tried adding the flashlights but the finished result looked too busy.
Here is a link to the fake webpage.
Page Link (http://www.webdata.gr/~pureghostgr/main.html)
I hope everything matches ok. The only change is that I placed the top frame to 128 pixels.
And this is the ZIP file with everything inside:
Download (http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/PageElements.zip)
I've tried to keep the spaces and button locations the same. The size should adjust according to resolution. (Does it?)
Comments would be nice at this point.. problems, things to change etc.
TechProb: Even though I've opted for the rollover button image to pre-load, it doesn't.. any insights on whats wrong?
I'm happy with everything -- Damn better than my cheap and cheerful five minute photoshop job!

You might want to add them to the AGS games page, too, where they are conspicuously absent...
How am I able to do this? I thought someone sort of added games to it when they remembered to... is it my responsability?!?!! I'm looking into this RIGHT NOW!!!!
If your game is on the Announcements page (Which, from my memory, it is) you have nothing to worry about.
Soon, I'll compile a list of all AGS Games and Demos so we have an idea of what we can vote for.

Except that people may go looking for it in the games page and not find it. I PMed the good Captain already, but for those who dunno... when you start a game thread in the announcements forum then there is a link on the post message page that lets you add the game. I think it also appears if you edit your message.
The link may also appear in other places, too...
Yeah, but I'm going to make up the list from the games in Announcement's forum -- so as long as your game is there, then there's no need to worry about your game not being included in the AGS Awards.
Tomorrow I'm hoping to be able to post a new pair of links to the latest versions of the games on the announcement forums, PLUS I'll then pop the games onto the games page... Thankyou everyone!
I MAY even arrange screen shots!! You can never tell!
