Title: Byzantine - The Demo (now working)
Post by: Adamski on Mon 05/05/2003 22:17:15
(http://screen7.adventuredevelopers.com/byzantine.jpg)

It begins here. (http://screen7.adventuredevelopers.com/download/byzademo.exe)

Warning: There have been reports of the demo crashing at a specific point in the intro. After a little bit of testing (all credit to MillJROSS, nice one buddy) it appears that disabling either Anti-Aliasing of sprites or the force 85hz refesh rate options in the setup.exe will solve the problem. Windows 2000 and Windows XP uses do not seem to get this crash, so this only applies to those running ME or 98.

Well.. it worked on my pc, and AGA's.. the only connection I can think of is that we both use windows 2000.

Anyway, it's a great demo, short.. but I loved it.  Seems like it'll be a game I'll really enjoy :)

I have just got to say, DS, did an awesome job with this. Anyone who is anyone, unless they're someone, will love this demo. It's got a great atmosphere, and great writing, which we experienced from The Longest Journey Part 1. You really must try it.

I tried it in Win2000, but could only get the intro (with credits), and after that, a black screen. I even had to restart the PC, since I couldn't access the Task manager rightly! I'll try it again in wondowed mode...

Just turn of sprite antialiasing in the setup, that's what was causing the error.. but it seemed to work on 2000, maybe you're having another problem :(

For me, turning off the 85 Hz display thing did the trick. Antialiased sprites are on. (98 SE)

DS, I downloaded and played Byzantine late last night, and I am extremely impressed! This is one of the most moody and atmospheric AGS game i've seen so far!
The music gives me the creeps, which is excellent, and the story is very interesting.
Certainly looking forward for this one!

I've managed to play a bit in windowed mode (in Win2000), but it's too tough as the fonts are too small. Have no idea what to do once outside the apartment. Will try at home (XP).
Anyway, the game seems marvelous, the interest of the plot matching the excellence of the art.  Very, very promising!

Holy... fucking... crap! This is the most exciting thing I think I've ever seen come to AGS. It's absolutely perfect. I'm not kidding when I say I actually have tears in my eyes.

/me calms down a little

I'm really looking forward to this. Jesus... that intro is just cinematic, and the music is so hautingly urban...

Have you tried what it says to  try if the game crashes?

if not, try turning off the 85hz option in the game setup, if that doesn't solve it then turn off scaling antialiasing.
Hopefully that should get it to work.

out of all the demo's i've downloaded, this i expected to crash and burn :-\ the switch from the intro to the story took a painfully long time to change and i thought it had gone tits up then, but it didn't
they say a computer is as Intelligent as the people who use it....... i think mines contracted mood swings from her in doors!! :'(

I had to turn anti-aliased sprites off to be able to play this. It's awesome! Intro is probably the best I've seen in AGS game. Music reminds me of music in Fallout 2. Very atmospheric. Great demo!

Really, really good Dark Stalkey, I'm dead impressed! The atmosphere is excellent.

Only bug I found was the character kept walking backwards, and sideways - but he doesnt seem to have a walking down view?

Pessi too, great art, fantastic.

Can't wait for the full game!

Crashed during the opening credits after a bit. Loved what I saw so far, will try playing it again. Is the opening credits a single video or is it scripted to do all the cool typing characters stuff??

DS, could you try a re-compile with 2.55 RC 1 and see if that helps the crashing situation at all? cheers.

Looks great by the way, as the others have said the atmosphere and music fit really well.

WOOW  :o :o :o
This is most cinematic AGS game I've seen so far! Demo was fairly short, but I do expect lot from the full game! I like the graphics, I like the ambient sounds, I like the character. The character reminds me alot, not just physically, but also otherwise. Hey, have you read some of Bester's books? Because the game's athmosphere and way of language you use reminds me lot of his books.

Keep up the good work (say, how soon you expect the game to be finished?  :))

I finally got round to playing the demo.

AWESOME, love the intro, nice build up of atmosphere, and the graphics and effects and music are all great.

Can't wait for the full version.

btw I noticed when I moved the mouse to the side of the screen when there was mouse over text, the cursor moved one way while the text above it moved the other.

Excellent work Dark Stalkey and company

Great, DS...
Parts of it resemble to Sibylla, I will publish a demo for it soon, and you'll see some of the atomsphere is kind of similar...

I love it so far.

It looks great - and a hero who lives in West Bridgeford?? I'm warming to it by the minute...

Aha, a fellow East-Midlands-living-person I see. Glad to hear it, everyone else seems to live either in Wales or 200 miles South :)

Absolutely brilliant. The intro is well constructed and well written, the graphics are very moody and set the tone well. The music, though: wow! This is something else! Will you/are you going to be releasing this seperately too? I have a Sonique playlist screaming for it. Very athmospheric and I'm waiting with baited breath for the release version of Byzantine.

Boards Of Canada - Geogaddi (http://www.warprecords.com/ography/release.php?cat=WARP101)
Hefner - An Evening With Hefner (http://www.inertia.co.uk/disco.asp)
Coldcut - Let Us Play (also check ninjatune.co.uk - i would have linked directly to Coldcut's site but it appears to be broken at the moment) (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000003S7Z/002-0685589-6059246)

Go forth and get these albums, your Sonique playlist will love you forever.

Stop going on about the up and down walk cycles >:(

Stupid kids, I remember when we didn't need walk cycles at all, the game told us the character walked up and we believed it.

The demo is re-uploaded to the same location as before. Remember:

1. Play the game with the sound on - preferably with headphones.
2. If it crashes during the intro, disable either Anti Aliasing or Force 85hz Refresh Rate in the set up.

That's really good.  The music rocks!

During the intro the graphics (such as Special Thanks to ... etc.) were showing up with the pink backgrounds (I'm guessing they were supposed to be transparent?)

The character is big and well detailed *no comment about walk cycle*

This game is one of the best I've tested so far.

Pink backgrounds? Now that shouldn't be.
Edit: re-uploaded with the latest beta of AGS. Perhaps that'll fix it. I never get any problems so I can't replicate it unfortuantly.

Darkstalkey, just played it again.. this time with working sound and it was awesome!  Definately in the top 5 ags games I'm looking forward to.  If the whole game was this good it'd rival even commercial adventure games.

With the quality of the rest the walk cylces really let it down I think, so I'll get to work on some proper ones with up and down now..

Edit: And far from crashing my computer it actually fixed it!! My low res modes are all distorted, I assumed my monitor was dying, but your game looked perfect.. strange.

What's the status on Byzantine? I just replayed the demo yesterday and was reminded of how much I'm looking forward to this game. I LOVE the atmosphere, the visuals, the music, and that strange but cool effect when looking at the papers on the desk. Judging from that and the intro, I could swear you've got some kind of Vanilla Sky/Abre los ojos-thing going on

Are there other any sources of information about the game than the short description at the Screen 7 site?

Heh, it would have been just as much as a hit as it is already I believe :) Although, yes, Pessi's graphics do slap cat's ass and add to the atmosphere tramendously, I myself would have been equaly as happy  ;D
