Well, after a few months of head scratching and slightly drowning at the deep end, I'm now making very good progress with my first adventure game - 'The Discontinuum Kitchen'. It's based on a short story I wrote many years ago (and which was published in Interzone). It's been extensively reworked and re-imagined to transform it into a proper adventure game.

Early in the game as your character arrives at his destination.

Exploring the grounds of Audsley House.

Further exploration.

An image from about halfway through the game.

The front doors of Audsley House, a closed down government research facility.

One of the secret documents your character will discover.

A shot from the opening cutscene.

And another shot from the same short cutscene.

The main character, sent to Audsley House by the Ministry to do an audit of equipment left behind at the now closed down establishment, must discover the sinister secret behind the old building. He will be met with considerable resistance from the house's sour and elderly janitor who may be hiding one or two secrets of his own.

Although it's hard to judge, I anticipate this being a medium length game. Perhaps other people will have an opinion on that when it gets to the beta-testing stage.

Graphics - 90%
Puzzles - 95%
Scripting - 95%
Music/Sound - 100%

I've got this quite advanced before announcing it as I didn't want to get hopelessly lost in the coding and have to give up. Now I know I'm nearly there and it will definitely be released.

I hope you enjoy the screenshots,

Stuart

Frodo

This looks fantastic.  I love the graphics style, and your use of lighting & shadows etc.  :cheesy:
And the story sounds really interesting.
Really hope you see this through to the end.  :=

I'd like to volunteer for beta testing, when you get to that stage.

Khris

Looks pretty cool, although I could to this day never warm up to that particular graphics style. I love the fact that you waited until near completion to make this thread; too many promising projects get abandoned.
One small but important thing: please consider using a different font. The default font is already ugly and overused, but the combination with highres backgrounds is just jarring.

Stupot

Firstly, you have a good name :D
Secondly, I used to read Interzone. Nice one for getting your story in there.
Thirdly, the game looks good.  All the best bringing it through to completion.  I look forward to playing it :-)

CaptainD

Firstly, I agree with Stupot - great title!
Secondly, I also used to read Interzone - and have had a story rejected by them!  Many years ago...
Thirdly - wow, lovely graphical style.

This looks really terrific.  8-)8-)

Thanks to everyone so far for the kind and encouraging words. I'd be happy to have you on board, Frodo, as a beta-tester. I'm currently ironing out as many glitches as and when I come across them as well as enhancing animations, so hopefully your job will be a little less taxing!

I won't be recording voice acting until after the beta-testing. There's a fair bit of dialogue so I don't want to record things unnecessarily or suddenly need a second recording block.

Khris - I agree with you on the font front. I'll change it before any kind of release.

The Interzone story was published many moons ago (probably early 90s) under the same title - The Discontinuum Kitchen.

Tabata

The story sounds interesting and I really like how you did the characters (nod)

Good luck for your game - looking forward to play it

Looks like a cute game.  Sorry to sound repetitive, but I agree with Khris that the font doesn't look quite right somehow...but I also like that it's already near completion before you presented it so I know for sure that I'll get to play it!  :)

Stupot

Have you got a link to the original story? Or would that be too much of a spoiler for the game? ;)

This does look good. One comment about the side views, however: straight on side views only let us look at their ears and cheeks. It would be visually more intersting if we could see just a bit more of their facial expressions.

Perhaps we need to clarify that this isn't the critics lounge?  Let's stay on track here y'all!

It would be rather a spoiler for the game, to be honest, as they loosely follow along the same plot.

The font has already been changed and it instantly makes it look much nicer and much more readable too.
