**********UPDATED 13th SEPTEMBER 2008 - Scroll down for DEMO**********

Gamejelly Studios Proudly Announce

FALLEN LEGEND: An Epic Horror Adventure

Middle-aged book author Peter Lewis retreats to the Canadian Rockies to gather influence for his next book. Ideally situated in a remote lonely wooden lodge on the side of a lake, Peter's idea of peace is somewhat shattered after a string of endless nights' sleep...Where are those screams and chants coming from?

With a craving to investigate, he delves deep into the heart of the mountains...deep into the depths of the forest...deep into an unimaginable adventure of pure terror.

Hey, this looks very very good. In spite of the lens flare. ;) The concept sounds like it could make a very nice adventure game. Good luck with it!

If there's one thing I hate, it's lens flare. But I REALLY needed that look in there to set the opening scene.

It will be commercial. We will however release a playable demo in due course.

If you want to go commercial, never use photoshop filters. They look horrendous, especially with the beautiful artwork underneath it. Find otherways to create lighting. Just NEVER use photoshop filters (except blur, sharpen, and the more subtle ones)

MODS in it. Nice..you got yourself a team.
Title: Re: FALLEN LEGEND
Post by: DazJ on Wed 16/07/2008 16:17:21
I've removed the lens flare from the game :)

We're using our own designed GUI which is very similar to Broken Sword's and so far it seems to be working great.

Yep, Mods' in it :)

I'm not all too happy with the looks of the character in the second screenshot (especially the "smooth" scaling), but on the overall, this seems like a potentially neat game. Not sure if it will be Epic, but it does seem to have at least some potential.

Also, m0ds in your team = instant win.  ;)
Title: Re: FALLEN LEGEND
Post by: DazJ on Wed 16/07/2008 16:29:06
Thanks.

Regarding the character's scaling, that's more or less a technical issue that I can't really do anything about. He needs to scale smoothly and that seems to be the best AGS can do, unless anyone knows of another way? Send me a PM if ya can help.

Yeah but everybody knows Mods ONLY makes midi music. That's a bit hard to sell. ;)

Best of luck to this project. It looks quite lovely and I'm sure that mOds will create some great music for the game! :)

Thanks guys.

Midi by the way can be just as effective if it's right for the style of game. It also helps create great atmosphere.

Hehe...it's not going to have MIDI music! This year I've been concentrating on digital stuff. Thanks for the kind words! From what I've seen and learnt of it so far though Fallen Legend looks great! So I will try & help do it justice. Or just feck it all up :P Good luck DazJ & team

You won't feck it up ;) If you did, I'd tell my mum on you.

A few more backgrounds are currently being worked on as I type this. Everything's still going smoothly, fingers crossed!

GUI, maybe graphic style, atmosphere (though it's much darker than in most BS games).

I almost didn't come into this topic because I am the kind of guy that will judge a book by it's cover and judge a game by it's title. FALLEN LEGEND is a really bad title. It sounds like the generic output game name of some GAME NAME TITLE GENERATOR and it could have been anything.

It was a nice surprise though, to find that you have very very nice backdrops and an actual interesting sounding story. I was expecting "jaded fantasy hero must once again save the kingdom." Period isn't really an issue but you have chosen a very nice aesthetic for the game.

The character sprite feels like it clashes a little with the backdrops but that's just me being picky about shit because it does look very nice.

Looking forward to it anyway. I'll definitely give it a shot but BIG GRIPE: Bad name.
Title: Re: FALLEN LEGEND
Post by: DazJ on Tue 22/07/2008 14:51:11
Thanks for the reply ambientcoffeecup, I appreciate everyone's input regarding the game.

It's surprising that the character does clash with the backgrounds because he was drawn and animated by the same guy who did the backgrounds. He has been resized considerably though as he is a full screen height originally. It's probably this that's the reason for the anti-alias issues. Either way, there will be parts in the game when we will see him drawn fairly large.

Regarding the title, I'm afraid Fallen Legend is here to stay. The title WILL be fitting once you play the game and realise EXACTLY what it's about. Until then you'll have to wait ;)

Again though, thanks for the input :)

hmm... Interesting design for a Horror/Thriller I trust it will get a lot darker latter on.
Also the main charactor looks a lot like Peter Parker in the early issues of Spiderman. LOL

But it still looks very good. Looking forward to this one!

We should be releasing a playable demo soon.

Title: Re: Fallen Legend - DEMO AVAILABLE - 30TH JULY 2008
Post by: MashPotato on Thu 31/07/2008 01:36:14
Congratulations on the release of your demo :)  The game's got a unique look, and the "ping!" with the "Day 1" reminded me of The Shining, which is a good thing considering the game's premise ;)

I assume this isn't the "official" demo, but just a preliminary one?  If so, I realize this is probably still in the WIP stage, but I have some critique/suggestions if you don't mind :):

1)make text skippable :)
2)some of the button hotspots seemed too small and I had to repeatedly click in order to get a response (eg. "New game").  I also had this problem with selecting inventory items
3)the dialogue font is rather hard to read on some backgrounds.  This may be a personal preference thing, but I'm also not sold on using a font that is all-caps for a horror game.  It seems a little too shout-y for an eerie atmosphere ;)
4)I think it would be good to make the player turn to face whatever he's describing
5)it would be nice if commands could be interrupted (eg. while he's walking to interact with a hotspot, I can click somewhere else to cancel that)
6)when I pressed ESC, in addition to the options menu the quit message also popped up.  Also, I could bring up the options menu on the opening screen
7)the mule deer slides during its animation
8)this is just my opinion, and perhaps it's not done yet, but for a commercial game I feel the game needs more animation (eg. log cutting (showing just the start before the fade), flag flapping)
9)the descriptions are rather bare-bones (once again, they may not be done yet)
10) I couldn't walk to the lake; I assume I wasn't supposed to be able to since it's a demo, but maybe disable that so people won't think it's a bug :)

I hope I haven't come across as too negative :-\  The premise sounds good, and it will be interesting to see how this develops.  Good luck!

Nice work!

The color are great and give the scenery a very gloomy atmosphere. Along with the music, I can imagine that this will get pretty thrilling.

But for pulsating lake... this looks a little strange. I think it would have been enough to move those ripples instead of letting the whole thing grow and shrink.

Thanks Mash for the effort of downloading and reviewing the demo (which is a WIP more than a demo).

EVERY single point you've put across had already crossed my mind and I intend to fix each and every one. Guaranteed, all of these will be implemented into the final product. As we've established, this 'demo' is really a WIP, released due to members asking me when a demo is going to be released, lol. Trust us, it'll be worth it when it's finished.

The 'pulsating lake'....yes, lol, this I'm totally aware of. Again, it will be fixed/tweaked.

Thankyou though Mash, I really appreciate the critisism :)

I was disappointed that the demo didn't really let you do anything, but I guess that's a good thing - it meant I was intrigued by what I saw. I would recommend that you add in NW, NE, SW, and SE walking animations for the main character in such a high-res game. And make text skippable, but you already said you were going to work on that.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - it is absolutely beautifully drawn.

Our artist is already working on those walk-cycles - they were intended to be a part of the walk-cycle from the beginning :)

Text IS now skippable but not in the demo.

They'll be another version of the demo in the next couple of weeks or so.

I love the style.
Unique, atmospheric.
For me, it looks better than all those commerial 3d games. There's life to it. And undulating lake didn't bother me, I can take it as the graphical style's idiosyncracy.
Backgrounds and music are ace, I also dig the Kingish plot!
However, implementation sucks a bit ;-)

Steve walks really too slow, the horizontal walkcycle is awkward. I believe you could cut down on the frames, as there's some "sliding". Also, pathfinding was faulty in some instances.
The deer slides, because you didn't center the sprite, I think.
The hotspots for inventory/menu buttons are somehow off.
Also, the "woodcutting darkness" lasts too long, animation would be nice.

But it's my favourite demo in a long time! I'm verry interested in how this will turn out.

It's Peter ;) As mentioned earlier, even our character artist isn't happy with Peter's walkcycle and will be redrawing/fixing it.

The voice for the male lead of Peter has now been agreed - if anyone wants to hear samples I'll be glad to post them.

The female role of Pam is about 99% cast too. Just waiting for the official 'yes' from the woman who auditioned.

The voice talent is being provided by professional voice-over actors, who will be getting paid for their efforts.

Right, where to start...

"Fallen Legend" IS still in production, I have no way gave up on it. For the past 2 or 3 months some personal stuff simply got in the way and I had to deal with all of that before I could attempt to get back to work on it.

This is just a quick update really to let people know that Fallen Legend is back in production again.

Good news Daz, I hope you can send me an extensive music list sometime soon. I'm ready to start afresh and I think it's going to be much better than if it had been before Xmas ;) But I need a full list so I can get a full idea. Good luck!

Hotspots/interactions for everything on the screen would be nice, (pictures on the walls, flower pots, windows of the store, etc) at least the ability to look at them anyway. I was unable to find the logs for the firewood.

Peter looks a bit like Steven Colbert.
