Thanks to the people who've played and enjoyed Frank the Farmhand part 1!
In Part 2:
The story's 100% done and so's the puzzles.
I work towards a release at the end of the summer.
It'll consist of 20 playable rooms (and some cutscene-rooms of course) and 10
new characters (not counting the ones from part 1, eg. Frank, the professor,
Sam n Max and Ben which will also be in this part.)
Here's the backgroundart for two of the rooms:

Looks nice...! I enjoyed the first part, hope this will be as good...
/me remembers he hasn't finished the first part yet...
Woo hooo!!!!! :) :) :) :)
I loved the first one, and i can tel that this one is gonna be better!
That art looks gr eat!
Be sure to post updates!!! 8)
Oh, I will. Don't worry.

Hey, thanks a lot! :D
Yes, great art work. It is indeed filled with atmosphere.
How long do you pretend to make this game? Like the other
or longer?
Hopefullt not as long since I can reuse a lot of characteranimation, most importantly the
animations for Frank. The backgrounds doesn't take that long to make (I've almost
completed the third one now, and sketched two more on paper) so it's mostly the animation
that takes time. Perhaps the game'll be finished at the end of summer. I can't really say for
sure though as I've just started and might run into some problems on the way.
Here's a new fresh screenshot, just out of the ovens!

So what do you think? I'm quite pleased with it myself. :)

I think I've seen that sky background somewhere before. Maybe in the critics forum? Have you been stea...borrowing? ;) j/k but I think it's a bit different from your other style.... it's something about it that doesn't fit if you know what I mean. Parhaps its the sky gradient...and the colour of it. Yes thats it I think it shuold be more blue in it.
Other than that everything looks really really great.
Pretty cool perspective in that last shot!

Well, I've certainly not been stealing anything! I got the inspiration for the cloudstyle from Monkey Island 3 (and 4). I really like the whipped cream look of it! I'm glad you like the rest, though.
The camp reminds me of Hitman 1
yes! that was it! hitman1, thats where i recognised it from. Cheers haddas, thats been racking my brains for ages.
Funny. I've never played Hitman! :)
Heh. You have to infiltrate a military camp in the middle of the jungle and kill some guy in that mission. It looks almost exactly like that.
Cool! But that's not what you're supposed to do in this game (thankfully, or I'd get a bunch of lawyers after me;) ).
Another background for the game:

Very nice. Please, hurry up and finish the game. I can hardly wait to play it! ;D
yey! you killed the black outlines, nice one. Looking great as allways.
You can rerally see a big difference in this work to the backgrounds in FtFh1, can we see some new characters? maybe a revived main character?
This game seems to be real good I just loooves to play it. The screenshots lokks really hopeful for a good game with good graphics.

You'll see a lot of new characters in FtFh2. And of course some characters from Part 1 will follow into this one as well. Frank, Ben, the Professor, Sam and Max.
i don't know if it has been discussed already, and it's probably too late for you to do anything about it, but what really bugged me in the first game (and probably will in the 2nd, too) are that the agents are named sam n max. not to mention they are the exact opposite of the dynamic duo we all know and love. bland (stupid actually)/evil/not funny (to me at least) vs interesting/good/funny
i know it's your game, but i found your obvious ripof....oops tribute - out of place to say the least...
sorry for nitpicking, and btw the screenshots look great ... except for the mi clouds maybe? :P
Ok. That was a big diss. But hey it's your opinion!
Yes, of course the names Sam & Max's a ripoff. But as you said it's only the names that's the same. I just thought it was funny that they had the same names as our friends the dog and rabbit, and hopefully someone else did as well. Obviously you didn't though.
PS. Does everybody hate the MI-clouds? :'(
exactly, our _friends_ the dog and rabbit. the fact is i didn't like the agents, and that's why i don't think the names fit at all.
i don't hate the clouds, but they look kinda out of place in otherwise original artwork...
oh and about the agents... could you at least not start all their lines with "Sam, blabla..." "yeah Max, blabla..." :)
sorry for the critique, i just had to let this out... btw, my future game is gonna be full of ripoffs, i'm just hoping noone will notice :P
I love the swirly cloud.
I don't see how it's "out of place" with the rest of the artwork...( unless maybe everyones thinking something like "Hey , I've seen Anime-related artwork with swirly clouds...and...this is an American style game...Wha?! Must complain!" )
*shrugs and laughs*
================
Oh , I just checked
the review site and
it reviewed Escape From Monkey Island
too...that's the one I have...not the curse of MI or whatever.
But they both have swirly clouds. o.O
Still surprised at myself that I wouldn't remember something like that....I love swirly clouds.
I didn't even notice the names were Sam and Max, well I noticed their names but I didn't equate them to Sam and Max the cartoon dog and bunny
and kara it's not like that, the clouds are inspired from a game called Curse of Monkey Island and to me way to many people take those clouds and put them into their own games
http://www.sunstorm.com/ceo/reviews/mk-12a.gif in case you've never played CMI
Buy either way, if it's too late it's too late FOV, just letting you know
This is one of the new backgrounds for part 2!
What do y'all think?
I've been on vacation the last week. it was nice!
But now I'm back working on the game. Up to this point I've done
7 room backgrounds (of 17)
3 new characters (of 9)
a lot dialog and puzzles
and some of the introduction.
Nice work! I can't wait to play this game.
Wow, those graphics are really nice.
Let is know when you need beta testers. :)
I will let you know. The last part was quite buggy when released so I definately need help with bugtesting!

hey nice work, your BGs are getting better everytime. May i just tell you that it's (040804) though, welcome to 2004 ;)

Those backgrounds are incredible!
I wish you were free (of work) to make the bg's for Sunrise Manor ;)

Actually we write dates YYMMDD in Sweden. So I was infact writing "the third of August 2004". And thanks for saying that the BGs get better! Coming from you that means a lot considering how good your own BGs look!
I've edited all of the backgrounds I made with black outlines. Hope y'all think they look better now. I certainly do!

Update on progress:
9 rooms made (of 17)
6 new characters made (of 10)
I've done a lot of puzzlescripting and animation.
And some new songs and a lot of soundseffects!
Next I will continue with the tenth room as well as scripting another puzzle!
Oh this is really tempting me. Please fovmester, hurry up with finishing it so I can play it.
I've been on a second vacation (this time to Crete). But now that I'm back I'll continue working on the game again.
Progress:
10 rooms made (of 17)
6 new characters made (of 10)
Some new soundeffects have been added and some inventorygraphics.
hey fov, i must say that i really like the gui appearance...are you gonna stick with it or change it...I like it ...any others?Ã, Ã, ;)
And awaiting this one as always.
Thanks. I'm gonna keep the GUI. Part 2 isn't really a sequel but more a continuation of part 1 (like the parts in Monkey Island) so I want them both to look somewhat the same. While I've done a lot of changes in style on the backgrounds I've decided to make all characters in the same style as in part 2 as well as the GUI. BUT...I've made my own save/restore GUI for part 2 and I'm thinking about putting it in an updated version of part 1 as well for consistency.
Here's just a tiny bit of crit from me.
All of your characters have black outlines. I'm fine with that normally, except it strays from the backgroud style. I'd suggest turning the black outlines into a darker version of the main color, just to stay with the style of the backgrouds.
You don't have to, just a suggestion. ;)
Anyway, this game looks so awesome. I am drooling in anticipation!
How big do you tink it's going to be?
That's a good point, but as I pointed out before, I wanted at least some parts of the game to look the same as part 1. The black outlines on the characters and objects fall in that category, unfortunally.
I too think it'd look better to have coloured outlines but to change all character animation at this point would take WAY more work than it's worth. So I'm sad to say: the black outlines stays on the characters.
It's not completely amateur to have black outlined characters, though ;). Take the Gooblins-games by Coktel Vision for example. They all had black outlines on their characters and they're commerical games.
In any game I'll produce after Frank the Farmhand, though, I'll definately not have any black in the graphics. ANYWHERE!
Update:
I've made a lot of puzzle-scripting this week. And to go with it much character animation. The game's coming together nicely now as the different rooms get interlocked by puzzles and characters.
Progress:
10 rooms made (of 17)
7 new characters made (of 10)
Two new songs since last update.

Hi fovmester,
Thank you for the update and it surely coming along fairly quickly. Looking forward to this game.
Thank you! :D
I've got a lot to do in school right now, but so far I've managed to work on FtF2 really much. I really hope that won't change. My girlfriend's going out with her friends tonight and my friends're busy so I've got a whole evening and night to work on the game today!! Wheee! ;) That'll hopefully kick things forward a bit more.
Nice work! 8) 8) 8)
PROGRESS REPORT:
11 ROOMS MADE (OF 20)
10 rooms made (of 17)
8 new characters made (of 10)
One cutscenebackground and some objectgraphics has been finished.
The total number of rooms has been changed from 17 to 20 because I realised I couldn't reuse the same background for four different rooms (If you don't understand how I could've ever thought so then know that you'll see why when you play the finished game).
Here's a new screenie:
Some might've seen it in the critics lounge before, but you haven't seen that new character.
the background is cool but that new character looks really weird. maybe he's a contorsionist? ;)

What's a contorsionist?
Someone who can bend their body into many postitions normal people can't
yep, it looks as if the lower part of the body is facing one direction, and the upper part, the opposite direction
Ok, I can see what you all mean. I've changed the direction of his rightleg (the leg that's on the right for him) so it won't look as if he's bending impossibly. Thanks for the feedback! :)
Late update on progress:
Still 11 ROOMS MADE (OF 20) but 7 sketches of rooms made too.
9 new characters made (of 10) - Just one more to make and animate.
3 cutscene-movies (of 4) made.
Phew! Some busy weeks! I've done three cutscenemovies and another cutscene with a lot of animation. I've done another character and done a lot of puzzlescripting. Now you can complete about 4/5 of the game from start to end with all animation and all puzzles working as they should. That I've still got 9 roombackgrounds left to do doesn't mean that I'm far from finished(They're pretty basic and since I've done the sketches it's mostly colouring left.)
On the contrary I'm starting to feel the finishline drawing close. I've done most of the work already. The things left to do is mostly these 9 backgrounds as well as finishing the introduction, one more character and one additional cutscene. Then we're done! Then it's beta-testing time! Actually I've already given this 4/5-version to one of my friends and he's tested it for bugs. His feedback got me to change two puzzles to make them more challenging. I don't want the game to be to easy ;).
Great work,
It seem to be coming along well.
Keep it up.
Since this topic has fallen way down the forum I just thought I should tell everyone that I'm still alive, and that I'm still working on the game. I've had a few REALLY though months in school but now it's over and so I've got about three weeks to work on FtF Part 2.
Progress:
12 ROOMS MADE (OF 21) but 9 sketches of rooms made too.
9 new characters made (of 10) - Just one more to make and animate.
3 cutscene-movies (of 4) made.
I'm now working on room number 13!
Completed background number 13:
What do you think?
Nice, very nice.
I can't wait to play this game. By the way, how many parts will there be of Frank the Farmhand? Is this one going to show the end or is it a middle chapter or what?
This is the "middle chapter". There will in other words be three parts.
These parts aren't separate though, in the sense that they are all parts of ONE big storyline. Therefore I'll recommend playing and completing the first part before playing the second. Or you won't understand why things happens the way they do in part 2.
Big Update!
Now my christmasbreak has ended and school's started again. So let's round up what's been happening the last four weeks.
I've done A LOT of roomscripting and animated several long animation-sequences. I drew background 13-18 and made a lot of dialogs and bugfixing. I've actually been working almost full workingdays on the game for the last two weeks and it shows, because it's almost complete now. Ok, I still have one more rooms to do, and one scene with a lot of animation (ending scene maybe?), but most of the game-making is now behind me and hopefully I will have time to finish the game despite having much schoolwork to do.
18 ROOMS MADE (OF 19). The last is a handmade sketch as of now.
9 new characters made (of 10) - Just one more to make and animate.
4 cutscene-movies (of 4) made.
About release-date: I don't have the guts to give a specific release-date yet. Mostly because I do this in my sparetime (and I don't know when I'll have sparetime) and there might be popping up a lot of bugs that needs fixing before I can release it. But keep your eyes open! Especially if you want to beta-test!

Can't wait man! The game looks great!
Don't you just love those spurts of game-making insanity!

Not good for my relationship and/or my job, but good for my game!

Yep, it was pretty crazy! Luckily my girlfriend was studying for a gigantic exam she was having just when my school started so she didn't have much time for me anyway. Otherwise I'd be in big trouble by now! :)
Oooh, it's sooo close before it's completed. Fovmester, if you can, please, try to finish the game for next weekend. I want to play it so much!
Hi.
Actually I should be studying right now. I've got two exams this week! But instead I'm working on Frankie. And guess what I just did? I played the game from start to end. You can do that now. It's working and completed!!
I played the game to note down all the little bugs and mistakes in dialog that's still in the game. That became a 6 page list. But most of it's really trivial things that take about two seconds to fix.
I'm planning to give the game to my beta-testers sometime next week. So if you want to test it: Hurry up and tell me.
I'll test it.

In case you you don't know me.
In the past I've tested some third party programming software and that was to find problems/bugs. I think by beta testing your game will not be a problem
If any such problems in game, I'm not exactly sure what your protocol but I presume that I PM you instead.
If you cannot email me from here, simply PM me and I will give email address.
Regards
Happy to beta.
The game's going out to the beta-testers tomorrow! Soon you'll all be able to play!
I can tell you this much: It's bigger, better and more beautiful than part 1!!!
Actually that could become a problem for some. The game is about 42 megs zipped. But that includes high-res cutsequence movies that are about 13 megs. I've made some lowres versions of these as well (320*240) and I was thinking about releasing the game with those instead. They take about 5 megs which would make the total to 34 megs.
So my question to y'all is this: Do you want the smaller/crappier movies or the bigger/nicer movies?
I'd take the awesome high res cutscenes any day. :D
Frank the Farmhand 1 was high-res and 2 seems to be high-res too so somehow it seems weird to have cutscenes that are low-res in a high res game (I feel like it would look weird when seeing those in the game). If you're worried about the file size why not split those into multiple files that you have to download to play the game? Well, you got my two cents (or kronas if you like).
If the beta-test version is ready by tomorrow/today when do you think the release date for the final game will be?
I want the kick-butt cut scenes.
The people has spoken! I'll stick with the high-res-movies. Anyway I figure that for people with broadband 35 or 45 megs doesn't matter, and for those without 35 megs is to much anyway.
Quote from: Mats Berglinn on Wed 23/03/2005 10:45:18

That's hard to say, because I don't know how long the beta-testers'll take to play through the game. But I think I'll give them about a week, not much longer.
Then make sure you give us a walkthrough!
I've written a walkthrough for you, but I don't think you should have it right away. It's better if you try to play without it first. I mean if you all play it as it's supposed to be played then there ain't much point of betatesting, is it?
I'd like to beta-test.
Haven't done any beta-testing before, but I have broadband (so no bother on the file size), and I've the next couple of weeks off from uni. I wouldn't mind having something constructive (and fun!) to do. Plus, I really enjoyed part-one, and can't wait much longer for part 2. :P
The Game has been released!
Thanks to all my beta-testers for finishing their beta-testing in time! And for doing such a great job too! :)
