Hi Everyone !

I'm french, so I apologize for my mistakes :D

EDIT :

Well, the game I'm working on is a episode of Monkey Island, nicknamed "Daementia" because it is a fight in the head of Guybrush Threepwood, between episode 1 and 2.

This game is right now avaible on the website http://monkey-island.c.la and you can play with a alpha version of about 4.5Mo which introduce you to the game.

I made a video on Daylimotion which show some picture and the gameplay I made before the end of the Alpha version. You can see it here : http://www.dailymotion.com/user/le_mime/video/x8k854_monkey-island-fans-project_videogames

Right now, I'm looking for a team, if someone is interested, no problem !

Friendly.

Hello Chabiboy!

Please review the forum rules and add at least one more (in-game) screenshot!

Thanks!

Chabiboy

Hi !
No problem, it was too late yesterday, but I know for the screenshots ;)
It's updated !

Cyrus

What can you tell us about the plot?

Chabiboy

Ok, I'm french so I'm not sure to understand the word "Plot" but I'll try to answer :

Guybrush will get up and understand that he was dreaming... But in fact... he has a curse and the world where he is living in will change brutally !

Elaine will really become in the evil side... etc...

So it's the scenario I wanna develop...

Is it good ?

Is there (or will there be) any original artwork? as the video isn't anything worth writing about IMHO..

Chabiboy

Yes ! I'll draw original artworks for this game !

And I didn't understand what you said "as the video isn't anything worth writing about IMHO.."
I don't know what is IMHO .... u_u

Thx !

I've been watching your game production, and the only thing I want to say is that there are lots of AGS games with graphics ripped from MI games, many people are fed up... and even if your game is good many people will become discouraged of downloading your game for that reason.

Good luck

EDIT: By the way. I think that blur in your low-res backgound don't fit at all.

I don't see why you released an alpha while your obviously in a very early stage of development.

Thank you ! He said it to me in a PM ;)

Joe : yes, you're right ! those graphics you can see in the alpha version are the only you'll find from monkey island.... As I said it earlier, I'll draw some originals ;)
(You're right for the blur.... u_u)

ALPHA2T : For me it is an alpha... but maybe I don't use the right name lol sorry ! We'll call it as you want ;)

Joe

Ok I hope you correct that mistake in your game develop

First, Welcome to the forum!
Second, I wish you good luck with this game, the plot does sound a bit interesting indeed!

Ripped GFX or not I dont care, if your a scripter and no artist, just make the game with ripped GFX, and rather try to get someone to make original GFX when its done! Dont feel discouraged because someone mentioned that most people are fed up of people using MI backgrounds! Even though this is probably true you can allways use them as placeholder GFX and get original ones made later!

Again good luck!

This whole thing reminds me of something..I once did..bleh..
Worked on Strangeland, Primordia, Hob's Barrow, The Cat Lady, Mage's Initiation, Until I Have You, Downfall, Hunie Pop, and every game in the Wadjet Eye Games catalogue (porting)

Wait a minute, did you MAKE those last 2 rooms?
(Cant remember seeing them in MI at least).

Either way if you made them, why not just make all the backgrounds yourself?

Chabiboy

Hi ;)
Yes I made them. Why not draw all the background myself ? Because some of the fans REALLY WANT to see famous places of the M.I. serie !
You see, I don't want listen only fans who are fed up with walking in famous places and have radically a new game !

I want to do a mix between the two types of fans.

But be sure that the famous places will not appear a lot ! Just sometimes (rare).

If you're capable, i'd say re-draw the classic places from MI, it'd be interesting to see a new take on some of them i'm sure.

Thanks Joe !

Thats exactly what I meant!
It will look alot better if you rather re-draw those classic places!
I think ALL MI fans will agree!

KurisuHedgie

Wow, great to see more people interested in the Monkey Island series. It was a great game from LucasArts.

I'd be happy to join your team and help out. I'm working on a game for my Mom and others, but it's kind of on a stand still, and I need somewhere to put my creativity into.

You Sir, are a fabulous pixel artist! Congratulations to you because I think your going to make it!

Some advice:
Monkey Island 1 and 2 were famous for their beautiful background images but not just the images themselves. Their tone, shade and color were unifyingly important. I'm an artist myself and I think you could make the following improvements to your background art:

  • Lighting - Your images are fabulous, but they appear far too bright as if the room is flooded with light from every angle. You need tone and mood to set the scene. Like movie sets, lighting is key in any presentation. Take into account all of the light sources in the scene and make sure every light cast an appropriate shadow and highlight.

              ---

  • Color - The color of the original 2 Monkey Island games were colorful but not saturated. Make sure your choice of color for each object and the 'scene' itself speaks true of the nature of the scene. It's got to feel right to you in the end. Dead wood is gray where living wood can be a combination of grey, yellow and brown. But use bright saturated colors sparingly. Too many and your scene looks like a set from a children's learning show! ;)

              ---

  • Tone - Natural shades can help tone your image. I consider tone a comfortable blend of lighting AND color. Keep everything balanced. Light is light and shadow is shadow. In reality, every light source has a rule on where it's shadow is cast and where it's light reaches. While you can break the rules a little in a game world like Monkey Island, the best images borrow the basic rules from reality. It's what we see every day and what we respond to best. Your choice of colors are great but they can be improved. Everything in your scene looks too new. Like a brand new set from Peter Pan in Disneyland. Although such a set may be dressed to look old, it doesn't always look realistic. For instance your door frame. Just because it has cracks and wood grain doesn't make it look old. Paint also wears and tears and fades with time. So keep in mind the elements that would be affected with age and your images will be truly glorious!

              ---

Here is an animated example I put together for you:

Here is another animated example of some lighting effects you can achieve:

    Oh, by the way (BTW),
IMHO means 'In my HONEST opinion'.  :)

    Your english is great, BTW!

I just want to say I absolutely love how the Voodoo Lady's place has a door that serves absolutely no purpose because there are no walls. That's classic Monkey Island "prop humour" right there.

Jakerpot

Nice game!  ;) wy don't you make all the graphics instead? Would look a lot better than the ripped ones!

I agree with you partly.
We all wish you luck and happy painting! All you need now is a programmer and a sound effects guy!

Many cheers and best wishes,

sharprm

I agree about lighting being important.

I might be doing something like this in the far off future ...

SuperDre

OMG, if the new images are really completely done by yourself then damn that really looks like another new MI.. The only problem I propably can think of is the storyline, it doesn't really sound interesting to me.. but if the storyline is like your own images it propably will be great.. but I personally would stay away from the who shrink-storyline, unless it's about shrunken heads ;)
The dreamstory has been kinda done in 2, so why not just start 1.5 ;) where 1 left off, but I like the evil elaine...
If you like some input (or even more) just pm me, because you also don't really state what kind of teammembers you need more..

and OMG= Oh My God  ;)

What i mean is, why don't you re-make them? Draw them again, will be a lot better looking  ;)

Takyon

Jakerpot he's saying he's going to re-draw some himself and have some from the game without changing them. A mix of both.

The game looks really good so far chadiboy. Especially like the name.
ghost.

Jakerpot

I know J-Man, but what i mean is IF he redraw ALL the OLD BACKGROUNDS from MI it will look A LOT NICER and BETTER  ;D yeah, i like caps lock, please don't shout at me if you dont like it  ::)
Well, if he make all the graphics again with a modern tone, it will be a good game, an "Original Story Remake" or "OSR"  ;D

SuperDre

But also how about LEC not shutting you down because you use their IP.. I thought the other AGS game 'marooned' had such a problem. It would be a bitch if you've done so much work only to find out you can't release it..

Also how about making the graphics for a higher resolution, AGS supports it.. Anyway good luck, the screenshots you've made look absolutely great..

Yep, I'm sure they are not from MI. And yep again - why not draw all backgrounds yourself? Besides mixing graphics from MI1 with those from MI2 won't do. The difference is too big. Either make it in MI1 style, or go for the MI2. Omho since you can obviously draw cool and in MI2 style, better go for it and leave the MI1 style. I love your style.  :=
I am a mighty pirate. Arrrrgh!

subspark

There's great irony in what you've just said, rbaleksandar. :D
Chabiboy has already used a mix of the two styles! Its a well known fact that the background art for The Secret of Monkey Island was entirely created on the computer.
Did you not know that the backgrounds from MI2 were all oil on canvas and later scanned into the computer for touchups? What Chabiboy is doing is even better. He's effectively applying techniques akin to traditional painting on the computer using a tablet and pen. From an educated artist's perspective, he's already successfully unified the computer generated look of MI1 and the traditional painterly look of MI2 into one harmonious blend. I say congrats to him!

Also, I really must disagree with what most are saying. That is to repaint all of the old scenes!!

The Monkey Island classics (1 & 2 - the only ones that count in my mind before LucasArts ripped the story from the hands of it's creator) serve the player a tradition. That is to use the background art from a previous game only once. (Does anybody remember the top floor of the elevator in MI2). What would be fantastic and interesting is if Chabiboy were to reuse a background each from MI1 and MI2 and change it a bit. Alter it to suite the story and the tradition together just as was done as an easter-egg or more appropriately an in-joke in MI2. Further down the track on Chabiboy's 2nd MI game, assuming we get there, he could introduce 'three' new twists on previous locations, including one from his own game.

Chabiboy has clearly demonstrated that he is capable of offering outstanding artwork but I think that his talents should best be spent on creating new locations, introducing us to exciting and brand new areas of the classic Monkey Island universe.
I also hope he comes back online more frequently because his game thread is causing quite a stir at work!
Keep up the good work Chabiboy!! Two thumbs up! ;)

Cheers,
Sparky.

Erm, so where were the old screens in Escape From Monkey Island? Or are you like me and keep that game out of your personal canon due to its complete destruction of continuity?

We'll my statement you quoted answers itself really. :) But yes thats exactly how I feel about all of the Monkey Island games after LeChuck's Revenge.
