Well, I received some more inspiration to work on this template again. Truth is, I am not sure if I will ever make the Springfield Woes Game at this point. A game of that magnitude is just too much right now. But I do want to leave something for you guys to work on.
I am in the process of updating my Template once again. Once the next version is finished, I will upload it as a completed project and any new updates will just result in version changing.
In the last week I have added a few things. So here is what I have added:
*A new GUI for a start up menu, which would display Play, Options, etc... It was really one of the last few things the template needed as far as GUI's go.
*An alternate Classroom, so you have more than just one classroom.
*Backstage room for Krusty-Lu studios
*Krusty-LU hallway.
*Outside of Moe's
*Simpsons Basement
*The newstand section of the Kwik - E - Mart
*Two new sections at the PowerPlant.
So I think the template now contains 50 rooms. YAY!
So now, before I have a release, I want to get a few more things. I want to get another area of the basement, The simpsons Driveway, a few sections of the attic and the inside of the garage. Once all that is done, the whole house will be complete!
After I get that all set and done, I will connect all the rooms, add all the hotspots and just a few more tweaks. I might also fix the scaling problem with the characters. I also want to add some more animations to the pile.
If anyone wants to help as far as those things above, let me know. Also, if you would like, I could really use some help with animations. I need the simpsons family to have a talk animation and a walking down animation and possibly a pick up animation. Perhaps you can take the sprites and edit them to have those animations, or get frame grabs from the episodes. If anyone can help, please post here. But please... Dont post unless you have a question about it or unless you finished it. The more help I get, the sooner the next release of the template will get done.
If you want to contribute something else as well, thats fine also. Of course you will be credited if you provide something. Major thanks goes to ScummBuddy already for some help he has provided...

Thats right, most of you have seen the demo and now you will all see a completed Simpsons game some time soon...
Let me give you some info on the game. I wont let you know the details of the games story, but I will let you know about other features.
One, you can control the following characters in the game:
Homer
Marge with Maggie (same way as the bunny was controlled in Sam n Max)
Bart with Santa's Little Helper (same way as the bunny was controlled in Sam n Max)
Lisa with Snowball II (same way as the bunny was controlled in Sam n Max)
Homer is the main character in this game. To complete the game, you need all the characters to be involved, but the story revolves around Homer.
Each character that you control has different things they can do. Thus every character will have different GUI's. For instance:
Marge has Maggie, you will have a Maggie button.
Barts a trouble maker so he will have a Kick button in his GUI to kick people. (Not in the game, just here to show how the GUI's will be different)
I am also trying to develop GUI's that are different from other game GUI's like CMI, ILB, MI1 and 2, Zak McKracken, Full Throttle, Space Quest, Flight of the amazon queen etc... I want this to be an easy to use system, very presentable, very efficient and fun.
Their will definetly be in-game jokes, and easter eggs and you can have conversations within the game.
You will have many people to interact with, many objects and also many locations to visit, even outside of Springfield like Shelbyville!
There will also be an attempt to make arcade sequences, if my programming is good enough and if I can find graphics to use to do this.
I already have 90% of the simpsons house done. I only need the backyard, the closet downstairs, the bathroom in marge and homers room and the family bathroom. If anyone wants to help out, it would be greatly appreciated.
Also, if anyone can provide a link for where I can download the Simpsons Cartoon Studio and virtual Springfield, I lost my versions on a harddrive crash., I would greatly appreciate it. If anyone has graphics, idea's, sounds or movies they want to contribute, please let me know.

F9 will get you the character select screen
F12 may or may not save a screenshot.

btw, Is the game Hi-res 256 colour because the show uses a 256 colour palette and...well, Hi-res is the closest you'll get to cel quality.
I am debating on that actually.
I would like to use the hi-color graphics becouse this way there is no complications.
But many would probably prefer 256 color. But I feel that 256 color graphics could take away from the game.
What would you all prefer or recommend?

OKAY, well some more updates for you, since I dont have a webpage for this game yet.
Firstly, the Demo game will be released sometime soon, maybe today or tommorrow. It will include the following features:
*Homer character to control
*3 rooms, possibly more will be put in. For now it has: The kitchen, The Living Room, and the family room
*You can now control Marge who is followed by Maggie.
*You can interact with one or two things. Not much, and there may still need to be tweaking.
*The game will be hi color, and the best resolution to play this in is 640x400. If you have a powerful computer or a fast one (I have a 233 mhz pc), then you can run it in 960x600, which is the best display for this game.
*Some music will be added.
This Demo will be completely different than the last. Homer wont do wierd things... At least not wierd AGS things. He might do wierd Homer things though. ((8-0
I will try to add more of the house in the demo from now and on and maybe add another character or two and some sort of interactions, but I will see.

Is there anything to do in the demo, how do you get to the kwikemart.
there is no gui, there is nothing much to interact with, if you talk to marge you get the same message as when you touch the fridge.
I know it's just a demo, but it really seems just like screen shots to me.
I can only get to lounge room, kitchen and the other lounge room, hey there's two lounge rooms, one with the tv one with a piano and fire place. and the same lounge is in both rooms, I don't remember that in their house.
The way it was setup was the way it was in my virtual Springfield and on an online house tour, so thats what I based it on. Besides its just a game :) If their are any fixes to make everyone could always let me know.
Yes, the rooms are practically Screenshots taken. This was just an early development Demo. Like I said in my posts and the readme files, This is not how the game will be, it will be better and it will play better and have better animations etc...
I have already made some adjustments to the game. I didn't want to add much interaction, cause I would have to re-edit the code afterwards for the actuall game. This is just to give you an idea of what it might be.
Here are some things you can do:
Press F9 to change player character. You can be Homer, Marge with Maggie, and Lisa who is at the Kwik E Mart (I know, Lisa doesn't look to great, their will be adjustments)
Press F12 to save a screenshot
Press F5 to save, F7 to load
Press CTRL-Q to quit.
Right Click to change interactions
You can look at the refrigerator and if you interact with homer, he does something. Also If you live the PC idle, Maggie will start doing something. Give it about 30 seconds or so.
About Hi Color problems... I am sorry Eggie. The graphics were ripped in Hi Color and when I tried to convert it to 256, it didn't look good at all.

*I just purchased Virtual Springfield and The Cartoon Studio, so I can now rip more graphics for the game.
* I added some Simpsons Fonts to the game. Needs some improvement though
*Added Following Characters: Bart, Mr. Burns, Smithers, Principal Skinner.
*I added some new cursors to the game
*I added a Dialog between Homer and Marge, Homer and Bart, And Bart and Marge.
* I have scripted the entire introduction, but only about 15%-20% has been programmed in, give or take.
*I added the Springfield Map interface Button, so now who ever you are, you can travel around springfield, if the location is available.
*I added these rooms to the game: Dining room, Backyard, Marge and Homers Bathroom, Barts room, Lisa's Room, Maggies Room, Marge and Homers room, In front of the stairs in the house, The Backyard, The front of the house, the front of Flanders house, and Barts Treehouse, In front of Moes Tavern.
* I made one of the interfaces for homer already, but in the meantime, it will be what everyone will use for now until it is ready.
* I also added some inventory items.
This is the progress so far. Also, can anyone point me to an excellent Image grabbing utility, or screen capturer that can capture Virtual Springfield screenshots? Everyone I use gets the colors distrorted. And is there anyway to make the VS screen appear in window mode?

This looks like a great game to work on, everyone loves the simpsons, and the brief story discription sounds original, which is hard to do with the simpsons, they've done eveything.
Reminds me of a South Park episode I saw the other day, Everything on the show was based on something the Simpsons did and they even converted the Southpark Characters into Simpsons style, it was a great tribute to them.

The inside of Moes tavern was input into the game and I also put in Moe as a character in the game. Some bar guys are their too.
It took me two hours to finally rip and edit the inside of the tavern so that I can put it into the game. Sheesh.

Well, I just wanted to inform you on this game. I have added a new user Interface for Homer. It will be a sort of Verb coin style, just different than the CMI or other ones. I have also created a GUI for bart and Lisa and Marge in the same style.
I have added a Load/Save Game screen which also includes "About", "Resume Game", "Restart Game", and a "Quit Game" Buttons.
I have added Nelson in the game as a new character. He doesn't do much. I also worked on adding a some small details to each room (Hotspots and places to interact with).
I also added a see through Label GUI at the middle top of the screen so that you can see all the characters, objects and hotspots that the mouse goes over.
I added more Dialog into the game as well.
I want to wait till the next release of AGS before I do some more stuff, becouse if some of the bugs and features (minor ones) that we are waiting for come out, then it would be worth it to add to it and release another Demo of this game.
I have also been making a Simpsons Small Game. I realized that the house is so HUGE!!!! In fact, I am making that game to be like Maniac Mansion or DOTT becouse it is so big. It will have Bart locking Lisa in his room and he is torturing her. Now as Marge and Homer And even Maggie, you have to get Lisa out of Barts room using things around the house. Then you have to find Bart and punish him or strangle him. That will be a mini game. Since the graphics and walkables are all done for every room in the house. (It wont be a super spectacular game like Springfield Woes or Maniac Mansion, but it will be decent)

Yeah, sorry. Its becouse free web hosts dont work very well. I have updated the game a lot more as you have noticed from previous posts, but still no plot has been programmed in.
What I might do is release the next demo with the current features updates, and then I might create a small Simpsons Mini game ala style of Maniac Mansion, where you have to solve puzzles within the house. Then in 2004 (hopefully) I will release the full game.
Thanks for your patience and your interest in this game.
Development will be slower than usual becouse I am also helping with the Demo Quest II project, so it might be a few weeks before I release the new demo, then a few months before I release the Mini game.

Hey there, i've had a look at what you've posted so far, and like i feel bad to critisize something you're so excited about, but to me it looks like a cut & paste job from what was it.. cartoon studio?
Now don't get me wrong, i think its a great idea for some templates.. but it seems to me that while you're relying on ONLY this process as your input to your project (at least as far as the art goes), you're going to stunt your project's growth..
There has never been a simpsons adventure game before, and i for one would rather it be good, than at all..
Just some advice.. it might be wise to drop the multiple character control thing.. At least within the one game (maybe episodes are in order?) Each simpson has a well enough developed personality to warrant them being the protagonist. As far as im concerned Bernard was still the main character in DOTT ;)
So um, im playing with vector graphics at the moment, and i'd be interested in helping out in the art department if you need an extra hand :)
Well, I also use virtual springfield to use as graphics. So far for my "wheres maggie game" I have enough that I need.
I have been getting help from others who have been able to contribute the art into the game as well.
Yes, my game may not be good, but I would like to make it anyway. I like the Simpsons, and I wanted to try this for a long time.
Besides, look at that sq3 remake, lots of people didn't trust that it would be good. Now they saw the trailer and think differently. I might surprise someone you never know.

in games about tv shows or at least with characters from movies and cartoons it's hard to make a real good adventure looking like the sshow itself. when i first heard you saying you're gonna make a simpson adventure game i thought it would look nothing like the original. after seeing the screenshots i seem to be proven wrong. good work.
I appreciate that, but there is still much work to do to make it good though. I hope I succeed. Once I am done with the game, I am also releasing a template with all the rooms, sprites and graphics for everyone to use. Just thought I would add that.

There is also a secret way to get into the Alien Ship and a spoof reference to a famous LEC game.
I will allow this game to be downloadable in a week, tops two, well another demo anyways, not the actual game. Right now it has about 20 rooms for you to visit and about 9 characters. But more will be added by the time the new Demo is released.

I spent about an hour ripping appropriate backgrounds out of Simpsons Cartoon Studio. I'm not sure, but I think I can take pretty good snapshots of the animations too for use by you. The backgrounds that i ripped come to about 10 megs. I dont know your email, or if your service could handle it. my freewebs host is down for construction, but i could either do neoles upload space, or just wait for freewebs.

OK, The website design is almost up. It will be generic, but it will give you all the details you need for the Simpsons games.
Next week along with the new Demo of "The Simpsons: Springfield Woes", there will be a fully released game : "The Simpsons: Where's Maggie?".
"Where's Maggie"? will be like a maniac mansion type game where Homer misplaces Maggie somewhere in the house. Your job will be to find her and search all the rooms in the house and find items to mix and use. That game will be a strictly Homer game with his special Interface.
"Springfield Woes" right now has 30 rooms in it, and there will be more by the time the demo is released.
Both games may include intro video's. So beware the file may be big. Once I release the game and demo, if anyone wants to provide me with a mirror site for both, I would appreciate it. Bandwidth is expansive for me on my server.

Yeah, I plan on it. But I plan on releasing it as a template file for AGS this way it is already setup for you(The house and rooms and other area's of the game).

OK, I got an Internet connection! Yay!
I will upload the game before next thursday. But I am actually thinking of releasing it January 1st to try and see if I can make the game be the first one released in 2004.
But on the other hand, I would love to qualify for the awards. What do you all think?
And just to shed some more light on the template... All walkable area's will be defined and set and the walkbehinds. Even the hotspots. And every room is connected to eachother properly. Also It will include all the Simpsons family characters and other characters and locations and objects/sprites/inventory.
Even the GUI will be set up for you. All you have to do is make the game at that point. Although there would be some code already put in, I will not include comments in there. Sorry.

hey, how's the completion of the game going?
Completion of the first game is done. But I have a serious problem, actually a few.
As Scummbuddy may have noticed when trying to upload to my server, we both had some serious issues there.
Nextly, the file download is more than 5 megs, unzipped is like 8. But my connection sends the upload at 1.2 kbps and my connection stays on for only 15 minutes at a time. I am having some serious connection problems.
My FTP program wont continue the upload from where it left off.
If anyone has any good FTP programs I could use, please let me know.

Yeah, its my ISP, I have to keep reconnecting to it. It has bad connections.
It could be my computer in general, becouse I used AOL, Netzero, and Juno and they all connect me at the same speeds.

I had to redo the template from the Start becouse I already programmed the game and I didn't want to delete all that stuff. I did use an old backup of the game to make this Template so there might be some stuff in there that reveal codes and other stuff about the game that is going to be released.

What is a template? Well, download AGS from www.agsforums.com, then put the template file in the same directory as AGSEDIT.exe. After that, start AGSEdit.exe and make a new project. Click on the SimpsonTemp icon and type a folder name in the space below and click ok.
What this does is create a whole set of Rooms, characters and GUI's. All you have to do after that is make your own plot and program it in along with the interactions. If you have other graphics you can import it and use it in the engine. I am hoping this will start something totally awesome as far as Simpsons Game making is concerned.

It now has 42 rooms, 213 sprites, 14 views, 13 gui's(two of which will be used for Sub-Rooms), 63 gui objects, 7 inventory items, 12 characters. Not all of the latest rooms have been edited completely. I havent done too much work on this game and template in a while. But here is my release. A new one will soon be released, I promise.

Consider these Templates as a sort of Demo for my game as well becouse the Story is 90% done and most of the puzzles are done. Plus these are the graphics and characters of the game.

Actually the demo was old and I had taken it off. The template should be considered somewhat of a demo. See when I make this game, I have to AGS' running. One with the actual game being made and the other that makes the template. When I make a room in the template, I transport it over to the main game files as well. Saves me time and work and allows me to make a template and a game.
Consider the template as the demo,. The old demo was removed. If the template doesn't download, make sure your copying the link exactly. It works for me.

Ok, a few updates...
First, my website provider sucks. So for some reason my site hasn't been up in about a month. And I cant get it back. I think it deleted my account and cant recover my information. I am slightly pissed off right now for that.
So I need who ever downloaded my last template to e-mail it to me at ajdiperla@netzero.net, And I mean the very last one... Look at the release notes to see if you have it or not.
Dont post before e-mailing me, or e-mail me first. Just e-mail it to me. I have 1gig space on my e-mail and I have cable internet so it wont take long to download.
But the good news is I got a new color PDA. I have been transferring my simpsons episodes over to my cartridge and ripping the sprites through episodes. So what?
Well, now with my stylus I can cut the images out much easier than using a drawing tablet or a mouse. Which means more characters that are not in Virtual Springfield or Cartoon studio will be featured in the game like the Flanders, the Wiggums, Barney, Carl and Lenny, Apu, Krabapple, Mrs Hoover, Willie, Martin, Jimbo jones and the other bullies, and more...
What else does it mean? Well, I can get to extract backgrounds a lot easier too. Which means I might be able to get all 300 rooms in AGS to be full. I can even get things that can be used as items off the show. This means endless possibilities for what the game can support.
Also this means that I can draw walk behinds in and Masks in my pda paint and transfer it over to AGS. Which means that this game and the template will be done much quicker than having me use my mouse.
Just an update. Oh and I need that template thank you.

The Template is about half way done. The game is a tenth done. I do have mini- simpson games that will come out soon though.

It has been. About two years if not more. And think about the progress that has been made too. 43 Rooms, 12 characters and 13 gui's (Each player with his/her own).
Thats more than most fan games created. And they are all programmed and ready to be played.
And now even more progress is being made with the game.
I am really hoping that once this template is done, it will spawn a whole series of Simpsons games from AGS.

ok, recently I have been working more on my Transformers Sim game at energonplant.com , but that doesn't mean I havent been working on my Simpsons Template.

But seriously, it looks like a great game. The ability to play as different characters is a very good feature, i'll be implementing THAT in my future games ( that's much like Krusty stealing someone's act .... well not really.... but..... y'know. ) so, long story short, it looks like a great game.

Wow.. what an unhelpful post. There are tons of fan games that use intellectual property not of their own. Yes, we are all aware of the danger of making a game that uses characters not owned or created by ourselves, but we still do it. Theres a futurama game, a stargate, starwars, indiana jones and other LEC owned property, but that doesn't stop us, because we all have love for those games, and have ideas for advancing the characters and storyline, and most have enough care for the property to never want to harm it with a crappy fan game.
I'm glad that you are liking the game, but we don't need reminders telling us that we don't own them... we know that. I know you weren't trying to offend, but perhaps I just took personal offense to it, but now that I've thought about it, you weren't really out of line. Sorry.

I will work on this game as often as possible. Although I dont have all the time in the world, so it may take a while. That is the reason why I am releasing Templates as I go along while making this game. Becouse then if I dont finish, or if I take too long to finish, someone else in the meantime can create a Fan Simpsons Game. I think there is more than enough in the Template for people to make some mini-to-medium length games in there.
Heck, there are more stuff in there than most full-long adventures, so I would like to encourage everyone to make use of this Template, most of it is already programmed for you. All you have to do is create a plot, add some inventory and program that it and you have a game!

Joey, how 'bout an update?
OK, well, my prequel to Springfield Woes is about almost done. You can expect that game to be done by the end of January. I have a complete Introduction scripted and ready. I have a good part of the game done as well. It will be a medium size game, but I want to make it more complete than that.
That game is going to be called "Where's Maggie?" It will be in the form of Maniac Mansion DOTT. You can control 3 characters. It currently has 27 rooms. So stay tuned for that.
All rooms in Springfield Woes and Where's Maggie as well as all characters, GUI's and other fun stuff, has been added to the Game Template as well.
Springfield Woes is my big project, so that wont be ready for about another year atleast. But, again, at the end of January, I will be releasing Wheres Maggie and an updated Template for all of you to use to make Simpsons Games/AGS shows.
You can still use the template now you know???....

I'am a big Simpsons fan so this game is looking to be really good.
Some of the backgrounds seems like they have some quality problems but then the screenshot of the Kwike-Mart beer section seems perfect.
Alot of the backgrounds have generic colors are you going to change or make them more authentic like they are in the Simpsons show?
About the GUI you should make it like King's Quest where you just right click to get walk, talk, touch and look .
They's are just some questions and suggestions but regardless it will be the best Simpsons game ever.

Now I didn't want to bother Darth into saying the same thing, but I'm pretty sure that the Forum Rules say that diggin up 'dead' threads (official this is not dead), but still noone has seen it for the last 2 months, you could PM the creator. Not to mention his other Simpsons thread... Check the Simpsons thread in the 2nd page of the productions forum. Post there...
Yeah, this Simp game and the other are two seperate adventure games... This one being much larger.
About the Background, believe it or not, I took them from Cartoon Studio, the DVD's and Virtual Springfield.
Well, I received some more inspiration to work on this template again. Truth is, I am not sure if I will ever make the Springfield Woes Game at this point. A game of that magnitude is just too much right now. But I do want to leave something for you guys to work on.
I am in the process of updating my Template once again. Once the next version is finished, I will upload it as a completed project and any new updates will just result in version changing.
In the last week I have added a few things. So here is what I have added:
*A new GUI for a start up menu, which would display Play, Options, etc... It was really one of the last few things the template needed as far as GUI's go.
*An alternate Classroom, so you have more than just one classroom.
*Backstage room for Krusty-Lu studios
*Krusty-LU hallway.
*Outside of Moe's
*Simpsons Basement
*The newstand section of the Kwik - E - Mart
*Two new sections at the PowerPlant.
So I think the template now contains 50 rooms. YAY!
So now, before I have a release, I want to get a few more things. I want to get another area of the basement, The simpsons Driveway, a few sections of the attic and the inside of the garage. Once all that is done, the whole house will be complete!
After I get that all set and done, I will connect all the rooms, add all the hotspots and just a few more tweaks. I might also fix the scaling problem with the characters. I also want to add some more animations to the pile.
If anyone wants to help as far as those things above, let me know. Also, if you would like, I could really use some help with animations. I need the simpsons family to have a talk animation and a walking down animation and possibly a pick up animation. Perhaps you can take the sprites and edit them to have those animations, or get frame grabs from the episodes. If anyone can help, please post here. But please... Dont post unless you have a question about it or unless you finished it. The more help I get, the sooner the next release of the template will get done.
If you want to contribute something else as well, thats fine also. Of course you will be credited if you provide something. Major thanks goes to ScummBuddy already for some help he has provided...
