I have noticed that when the GUI 'folds away' there is a grey bar still at the top of the screen. Is there anyway to get rid of this?

If you don't use it, just set GUI0 (the Statusline GUI by default)'s visible mode to "popup modal".
Which is in the BFAQ (http://americangirlscouts.org/agswiki/GUI%2C_Inventory_%26_Menu#Getting_rid_of_that_big_gray_status_bar_at_the_top). Make sure you check there before posting.
