The Cosmic Hobo

Hi, I'm new to AGS and planning my first game. I'd like to set the game resolution as high as possible, as I dislike blocky graphics, and would like to know how much this actually impacts game speed on today's fast computers. The same goes for colours and use of fonts; how much can I get away with? If possible I'd like to use my own (home made) TTF font, 16-bit colour and the highest resolution. Can I get away with this, or is it a really bad idea?

Thanks in advance!

Well of course you could get away with it, it just would really impact the games speed. You can get non-blocky graphics at any resolotion, its just the pallete that affects that, so I'd recomend using 640*480 with 32 Bit if you want a nice clean smooth game.

You can improt your own fonts into AGS whether they are homemade or not so long as they are ttf, i think.

So I do suggest not using 800*600... A lot...

My recommendation is to put together a test room and try it on some friends' machines, so you can see for yourself how it runs.
The speed you get will depend on how many objects and characters you need on screen.
Try it and see!
Personally I like 320x200, but if you're into detailed vector art maybe 800x600 is the way to go.

Im working on an mags game with 800x600 and 32bit and i guess it will be very huge.
my next one would be in 640x480 i guess.
on the other hand, 320x200 games will run on slower machines, but not on new ones ;).
I use a 19' TFT which cannot display correctly this resolution.
the minimum is 640x400.

Ishmael

I prefer 320x240... and I usually work in 16 bit color. Low res runs best on my laptop (I be getting a new one sometime though...)
I used to make games but then I took an IRC in the knee.

Thanks everyone; I think 640 * 480 with 32bit wins. I shouldn't think there will be more than a couple of NPCs on screen at any one time, so it should be okay...

Three backgrounds done so far...
