Well... technically, there is a TCP/IP plugin with which that would be possible, but it's hopelessly outdated and never really worked anyway. So, you might want to use something other than AGS for a project like that. ;)

Try Game Maker 7 Pro. They say there is a built in Multi-player option but you need to code the online part yourself. I never tried the Game Maker program myself but it might be something for you to look into if you are trying to make an online game.

Multi-theft Auto uses Raknet (http://www.jenkinssoftware.com/) to implement online play into their game.

I am also on the adventure for making an online game as you described so maybe in the future we could team up.
