Monochrome graphics is ancient technology to us. We are the future, we are the one.
Finally and after years of dedication in our labs, we finally introduce the seed of success:

CGA graphics baby! Yes! Those are colors you are observing with your eyes!
Your options are unlimited now!
Let your imagination take you to other realms and places you didn't dare to go to in the world of black and white.
Show us your talents by filling the following shape with anything that scream 80s

Rules:
You can rotate the shape 90, 180, or 270 degrees.
You can flip the shape horizontally or vertically.
You can color the outline of the shape as you like.
You cannot scale the shape. But using imagezoom is good practice.
The shape and the outline MUST only be colored using the four colors in the following palette:

Trophies: (1st 2nd 3rd)

Submissions deadline: May 1st 2015 1981

Congratulations AprilSkies! You won this CGA coloring ball!
Thanks to every amazing participant in this round! And thanks for all voters too! I'm glad that I couldn't vote since it was a very hard decision 8-0 See you in the next Coloring Ball by AprilSkies!

AnasAbdin

Hello????? Is it the pallette? I even chose a large shape to give space for gradients and cool effects :~(

cat

I think it's a great topic and I already have an idea, but sadly no time at the moment. Maybe next weekend ;)

AprilSkies

WHAT A GREAT COMP!
I hope to find time very soon! :D :cheesy:

AnasAbdin

Yay :-D I will extend the deadline if needed 8-)

I don't know how to use gradients in the expected way to achieve the '80's look when this technical advance came out.

I know what it looks like. But I don't know how to do it with modern day graphics tools (GIMP)...

I don't know if this is what is holding back entrants. But this is what is holding me back...

AnasAbdin

Mandle you don't have to use gradients! It was a suggestion only to stir things up :-[ check out the pod in the center of this SQ ]|[ background or even google cga games to get an idea of how simple this can be 8-)

Now I really wanna see an entry from you! (laugh)

selmiak

there are at least 80 s in this!

@Madle: Although this tutorial is for Photoshop and involves
some weird layer options, maybe it will help you:
http://8088mph.blogspot.com/2013/10/using-photoshop-as-cga-bitmap-paint.html

Also, I would just search for cga artworks (games, demoscene)
and study them very close, pixel by pixel to find out different
gradient patterns and what effect they create (edit: as AnasAbdin said earlier).

jwalt

Pretty much came up empty of ideas on this shape with color limitations. Decided I'd just get even:

[imgzoom]http://i1341.photobucket.com/albums/o756/jwalt10705/anasTry2_zpsvriztrdk.png[/imgzoom]

It was interesting to look at some of the CGA images, however!

AnasAbdin

My my! selmiak your animated shape is awesome. It is indeed screaming 80s 8-0

jwalt I spelled my drink when I saw your shape! I like it :P but if you want it to be part of this competition make sure you get rid of these few transparent pixels outside of the palette's limit.

Thank you WRK for the tutorial, but guys seriously this is supposed to be fun after all! Now you made me wish I never used the word gradient :-\ Tell you what? Fill the shape with as much colors as you want. Shade and do whatever you do. Then decide which colors from the palette fit best. If you want to melt two colors together was the simple chess board method :P If you want more shades simply check the CGA banner in the first post in this thread!

Putting in mind that you can always draw stuff with 4 colors and no shading at all!
Good luck 8-)

Transparent pixels outside the palette's limit... Looks like I wound up on the wrong side of my revenge.  ;-)

Edit:

Okay, I found and fixed three pixels outside the color palette. If there are more, it's okay with me to disqualify the entry. I'm having some problems uploading images at the moment, and it's not likely to change in the near future.

kconan

This reminded me of my 5.25 disk notch puncher from Electronics Boutique so I pulled it out from the deep recesses of my old IT stuff box, and there is only a passing resemblance...I think seeing CGA and those 3.5 floppies implanted the idea in my head or something.

AnasAbdin

jwalt no one is being disqualified :-D you're in.

kconan... wonderful find 8-)

AnasAbdin

I fixed a few pixels from jwalt's entry

To be completely honest with you. I don't know anymore. The more I look at it the weirder it looks, so I'll just call it art and let people come to their own conclusions.

There are those who believe that life here began out there...

Anke

I really, really can't believe, that I'm doing this. Lurking is so much easier. ;)
But this is such a great theme. I love the 80s. (The music and the films, that is. Not the fashion. Definitely not the fashon. It was awful.)

Since I can't draw anything beside geometric shapes, it's not exactley creative. But it does scream shameless ripp-off 80s. Or arcade, at least. 8-)

I hope you are kidding, as that entry is very creative.

kconan

Loosely based on a real conversation from the 1980s:

Me: Broke my new joystick playing Track and Field.
Adam: Whatcha got?  Gravis, Atari, Epyx?
Me: JoyPro Radical To-The-Max Edition.  Snapped off the top handle from the base in a clean break, and some of the cheap paint job came with it.
Adam: You get what you pay for.  Anyway, I'm off to watch Cosby.
Me: Cool! I love that show!

I didn't actually think of pacman (and still no inspiration) but the moment I saw it I thought "Oh yeeeeaaaahhh...I wonder why it took so long for the circle to become pacman." It seems so obvious in hindsight. But sometimes it takes genius to see the obvious I guess...

So chin-up Cassie: I just called you a genius (and Anke of course)...

Wow!
Monsieur OUXX your shape is amazing. It seems a pixel has slipped out but there is no problem as long as it's outside the shape :P

Anke I love your idea. It is screaming 80s games! I found a few pixels out of the palette. I can fix that no worries.

kconan your idea is cool 8-) But it seems you misinterpreted the rotation rule:
You can rotate the shape 90, 180, or 270 degrees.

so could you please do that? ;)

Hobo your animation literally screams 80s with music! I love it, few pixels out of palette but I'll fix it no worries.

Cassiebsg who said there could be only one Pacman? 8-)

MY INSPIRATION CAME AT LAST!!!

What screamed the '80's for me the most it seems was the Cold War and the threat of global nuclear destruction:

[imgzoom]http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c201/Mandle/CCCP-USA02_zpsqmwsb6ne.png[/imgzoom]

As a teenager in the '80's I grew up with the constant fear that nuclear war would break out at any moment and we could only hope that the Russians love their children too...

I'm also glad that my inspiration did not come the day after this competition deadline ended...

Tabata

I won't tell you how many hours I pushed pixels around in this shape.  :-[

Even I know the rules for pixel art I never used such a small colour palette. So I first had to look for some references and studied them.
Short time after starting I wasn't sure if I can finish this piece at all because - regardless of the quality of the result - Iooking at the zoomed version gave me the feeling of my eyes going to bleed

Well, but here we go - limited colour palette and shape should be okay (since GIMP took care of it  ) and maybe there's even a little chance that someone recognizes, what game the scene is from that I took for reference - even I needed to adapt it a bit to fit in the shape.

[imgzoom]http://fs2.directupload.net/images/user/150424/u6rxomwn.gif[/imgzoom]

AnasAbdin

Mandle you did it! And a very creative one too 8-)

Tabata... I got goosebumps when I saw your name in the forum 8-0 I was so looking for your entry!

Oops, my fault.  I'd rather not go through the trouble and prefer the broken joystick at that angle, so let's call it an exhibition entry that can't be voted on.

And after seeing the latest entries, I'm feeling less competitive anyway. 8-)

So much to gain from those 4 colors, unbelievable! Comparing today and then, RGB true colors seemed to be a backstep...

The 80's are portrayed for me at most by 5, Joystick and NES by AprilSkies.

Now I'm quite sure AprilSkies is in posession of a time machine. Not only is time travel a prominent feature in Tales, but the guy is able to travel back to 1980s to retrieve CGA art like this and post it here on the forums. Where's the time police when you need them? I want that DeLorean that you drive, April! ;)

14 -

I subsribe to Mandle's interpretation of the piece. Pacman as a metaphor for gaming (or pop culture) eating away our lives and destroying the family ties... Now that's darker than all Nightmares of Elm Street combined!

6 -

I could hardly draw without synth music so I really appreciate this piece (and I'm so happy for that synth-revival thing, it feels like 80's are all over again :))

Amy: I wish you had made it! Higlander is one of my favourite films and it's the one I've watched more times than any other (more than a dozen times surely)! Perhaps it's a kind of magic that it still holds up so well... I enjoy it now just as much as I did in the old days, while some of those other 80's gems has lost their sparkle for me, sadly :)

Well, it was quite a different experience for me as I was still a child in the 80s. I remember life at the other side of the Iron Curtain (Poland, to be specific) through a pink (CGA, EGA)-coloured nostalgia glasses: listening to Queen, Depeche Mode and Modern Talking on the radio, watching cool tv shows, playing war with my miniature toy soldiers, then that memorable day when my dad brought home 8bit Atari XE - so the only apocalyptic scare then was for me when I couldn't win a race in Badlands*. I don't even recall personally those Chernobyl days, which were pretty hectic in Poland (being so close to the border), I only know it from family members' tales. Only later I got interested in the history and got concerned about the nuclear bombs more (btw that was mainly thanks to the original Fallout game). And I saw The Day After, too. I value it immensely, it's one of the absolutely best apocalyptic films I've seen.

*actually those were my later 16-bit ST days, I think. Can't even remember any cold war game from that XE period :/

Wow...absolutely fascinating story. I had no idea about video gaming behind the Iron Curtain in the '80's. I guess I just assumed that people didn't have them. The only person I've known well personally from an Eastern Bloc nation was a refugee from Romania who escaped in the '80's before the coup, and his stories of people lining up for cardboard belts and shoes, and of himself hoarding plastic ball-point pens when he first arrived in Australia thinking they were worth a fortune, stay with me to this day. I guess either Poland had things a little easier than Romania or your family was quite well-off? Or a bit of both?

Kasander

Right, I think we're derailing this awesome thread a bit too much :D Let's leave it at that. I'll write you a PM tomorrow... or the day after ;)

Spoiler
"Gaming behind the Iron Curtain" is a vast theme. I believe it could make its own independent thread (and a long one!). I'm curious myself, how it was for people in other Eastern Bloc countries. I have no idea how hard life was in Romania, but in 80's Poland we were familiar with ball point pens (more or less!) and 8-bit computers were not uncommon. We've even had computer magazines as early (or as late, depending on your point of view;)) as in 1985 (the most popular one circulated around +50k copies and it continually grew in popularity). And no, my family wasn't that well-off, but my dad's quest for the Holy Atari actually makes some story ;) I'll write you PM!
