Time for an old favourite. Last time I did this was one of the most successful and educational activities we've had here, so I figured we could have another go.

The idea is simple; use this rough sketch which I whipped up this morning before my breakfast cereals as a reference; paint it over or just keep it in your mind.
Develop the image into a functional background for a game (as good as it can get; the view and perspective is not perfect for a game anyway).
This activity will run until the end of the year, so take your time.

I look forward to seeing many different styles and techniques.

Excellent, the last time we did this there were some great results :)

I took the liberty of converting it black and white.

Why? Converting to black and white is a single operation in every program out there..

Evil

I was wondering when these would come back. This one should turn out great. The concept itself is awesome, I love it.

LostTrav

I didnt have time to enter the first one, but I might enter this. Been meaning to test out the gimp. Great Sketch btw...

Bernie

I really like that sketch, so I gave it a go. It's a direct paintover with only details changed:

[Cameron]

I had a go, I'm happy with the sky, but I'm not sure about the rest.

Andail I just love your artwork! You never cease to make cool things. So, um, yeah. I might take a wack at it.

Andail

lol, I almost forgot about this.

Ok, the times are changing, last time we had this comp it reached like four pages of entries, but now people obviously couldn't care less ;)

Ah well, thanks, the two of you who contributed. I'll close this down on friday, in case someone is actually working on a picture.

Chicky

Either that or they were with family for christmas  ::)

I am working on it too. Since this is not an actual competition, can I post it here and get help? Or can I post it in the Critic's Lounge?
The ultimate Professional Amateur

Now, with his very own game: Alien Time Zone

JimmyShelter

I started working on one too. No idea if I can finish it, but if you could leave it open just a bit longer..

Evil

I started working mine. Mine was going to be an actual painting. I've been so tied up with the holidays that I haven't got anything but a few bad sketches.

We haven't had one of these for a while, and probably won't have one after this for a long time either. Give it another month I say.

Pelican

Here's mine. It's not my normal style, I was mostly just experimenting with all the tools in photoshop. ;D I was going for a dark, foggy, spooky look. I think its a bit pants though.Ã,  ::)

this my take on the sketch:

what do you think?

Damien

Wow DarkAngel, that's awesome.

Kind of reminds me of this video a bit:
Siddharta - Platina

Keep up the good work!

AGS-GD

Wow, this is super great, if such background was in a commercial game I would surely buy it ...

May I ask how long did it take you to turn the sketch into this master piece? And which software do you use -I assume it's Photoshop-?

Again, great work.

DarkAngel7

Oh yeah â€" I forgot to mention the software:
The sky is a composite of photos; everything else was created in 3d with cinema4d R9
The composition was made with Photoshop 8
It took me 5 days to create (it took the computer 2.5 hours to render the 3d)

Iwan

Cool enterys so far!

I don't think i'll be able to finish mine, unless the dead line is extended.

Anyway, here's my unfinished attempt. I was trying to make it look like castle ruins.

..

Well DarkAngels attempt beats the crap out of mine... and its gone past the deadline now anyway :P  I give up.

Bombadil

WOOOW DarkAngel7

Yours looks really really great!!
