Thanks to the interest shown by people after the X-prite jam towards a possible MI remake, I have been allowed to post a concept art of Mêlée Island, for looking for people interested in becoming colorist of this project.

Restrictions: You'll be the future colorist, so, if you feel like capable to make all the game in 640X400, go ahead. If no, multiply the size by 0.5. I am looking for CMI style, so, google for CMI screenshots or Paco Vink's interpretations, but if you feel you can give a different touch, go ahead. Feel free to change some of the lineart, if needed, you are the artist.

Remember, it's a night image. Use the intro screen of MI if you need to.

Alternartive animations. "Snailed clouds" scrolling from the right, as seen in MI intro. Smoke in some of the houses in the chimneys in the town.

If the activity succeds, I might need more help (Sprite artists, pencil sketchers...) feel free to PM me, but only when I post about it here, when I consider the people is interested.

And thanks!

EDIT: Posted reference, by Paco Vink, copyrighted stuff, ok? ;) Remember to make the sky cloudless.
Are you guys ready? Let' s roll!

Could you post a larger image for the linework? If some of us choose to go the CMI way, we will need the outlines as final linework for the background. And I definately work better with a huge image, scaling it down when it's ready. Also, some of the detail looks a bit confusing, because the image is so small. The linework looks great, though :).

looks really great, farlander. i'm glad you decided.Ã,  ;D

so, i installed my monkey island 3, since i haven't played it for (must be) about 4 years ago, and i quickly remembered how awesome the graphics of this game was. unrivalled.

and so i won't even try to mimic bill tiller. it's just way out of my reach.

i'll leave it to the guys with the wacom tablets.

How does this make sense again?

Anyway... Are we supposed to just colour the image, or paint a whole new pic? And how long have we got?

Nacho

The Cloud must be another layer that is going to appear, scrolling from the right, so, no clouds in the background. Alternativelly, the scrolling cloud. Colour the image, but you're allowed to change some of the basic lineart, you are the artist, no matter what the conceptual artist has made, if you can improve, don't hesitate. I expect to finish 2 backgounds per month, so, you have 15 days.

If he sees this he won't probably enter, I am not that lucky... Anyway, try, it will help improving your art.

So are you gonna put up a new pencil sketch up each fifteen days and the guy/girl that colours it the best has his/her version put in the game? Or the guy/girl that wins this is indefinitely chosen for all the bgs?

Well, goodluck with your game.

Nacho

As said, I am going to act depending on the response of the people...

Please, keep the thread clean, use PMs...  :(

I'm definitely entering this, expect my entry in a few days. But how do I submit my entry? By PM or in this topic? ;D

hey, farlander, i'm also trying this. I'm quite into it already. But it's my first painted backround ever so it'll probably be a joke. :)

EDIT:

Farlander to you mind if i keep a work in progress?

Here is the Monkey Island 1 original background, farlander forgot itÃ,  ;D

Please don't laugh at my awful painting skills, it's my first painted background so i need practicing.
I have done the rough brushwork (no texturing and detail).

Secret Fawful

Well, I'm quite far ahead myself. I have all of the sea, sky, and Melee Town done, and half of the island is done as well. Expect this post to be edited with a finished background soon. :D

I have done the rough brushwork (no texturing and detail) for the mountain and grass part so far. I have EVERYTHING still to do.

Far from a joke Buloght, I think its quite impressive... WOW! Cant wait to see it finished!

Just a little pointer, you should always try and paint onto a neateral colour (grey or greyish colours) as extremes like black and white throw your perception of colour, especially on a computer screen. Looks great though, i too look forward to the finished article!

Thanks dan. I'm willing to learn from guys like you. I have sky and water layers but they were turned off since they're mostly plain still  ;D The reason for the dark, i was told to always make the basic shape with the darkest colour first by this artisty guy, especially when its night. Thanks for comment on it!

Scummbuddy

I don't think I'll be able to enter, let alone apply for a bg job... but I found this around that may give some inspiration. It is a fan art piece by Ian Pointer.

- Oh great, I'm stuck in colonial times, tentacles are taking over the world, and now the toilets backing up.
- No, I mean it's really STUCK. Like adventure-game stuck.
