Topic: 'Moustache!'

This month's guidelines were set by Hobo:

Moustache are cool, moustache are hot, sometimes serious and dramatic, sometimes silly and queer. Male or female, bird or toaster - moustache does not discriminate, everybody are welcome to enter the competition and have a moustache good time!

It would be awesome if your game would somehow revolve around a moustache plot, feature a moustache character or a moustache inventory item, but all entries with at least a hair of moustache are accepted. Either love 'em or hate 'em - this is your moustache chance of your moustache lifetime, don't miss it!

Moustache! Moustache! Moustache!

PS: All beards and other bodily hair is also welcome, but moustache is a must(ache)!

Ending 31st March

What is MAGS?

MAGS is a monthly competition for amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to create a game in under a month, following the rules set by the previous winner. It aims to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, or provide a kick-start into making adventure games. Regardless of skill, MAGS is for everyone. Voting is based on "favorite" games, and not the most artistic, or the best coded. If you have bad art skills, use it as a chance to do some graphic work. If you're sub-standard at coding, use it as a chance to give scripting a go. Ultimately, people will vote for the most enjoyable entry.

You may get help for the competition, although you must end up doing something yourself. You should however be warned that it proves difficult to organize a big team within thirty days. You are not allowed to use material already created before this competition. Your game must be completely new! Music and sound is an exception; you can use free material that is available to the public, if you wish. Modules and templates are also allowed.

Entering MAGS is simple. First, conceptualise your game following the month's criteria (see top). Second, create your game fueled only by coffee. Finally, post your game in this thread, including:

âÅ"“ A working download link
âÅ"“ The title of your game
âÅ"“ A suitable in-game screenshot

At the end of the month, voting will begin, usually lasting for fifteen days. The winner chooses the next month's theme, and their name and game is immortalised in the MAGS Archive. For more information, please visit the Official MAGS website.

I'm really into moustaches but will not commit myself to anything, but we never know.
Working on a RON game!!!!!

CaptainD

Not sure if I'll be entering, but I do like the theme.  I'm tempted to make a game about a French onion seller called Miguel... :-D

TomatoesInTheHead

I too like this theme! A pity I just shortened my beard yesterday :(

I don't know if I will find the time to enter, but there are already growing some ideas out of my head! := And since I'm just coming back to the forums from a rather long hiatus, a MAGS game would be good to get started again with our lovely engine...

Dmitry Stefantsov

Hi, guys! My team has a great idea for this month MAGS â€" Salvador Dali! Ahahaha! That'll be awesome! We're totally in! Right now we're discussing it like crazy! (laugh)

HanaIndiana

Super fun theme!  But I'm out this month. I want to focus on finishing a long-term project.
But I'll definitely be keeping my eye on everyone's progress and anxiously waiting to play the final creations.
A Dali game especially sounds intriguing.

Good luck all!

ZapZap

I'm doing a game about a barber shop, I hope I finish it this time  (I'll be needing a musician...)
"Loose ends have a way of strangling you"

Eggie

My entry's coming together really nicely and I'm very confident about finishing it :)

I have finally created a story I'm proud of by removing myself from the writing process! Iiiif anybody here is into improv and would be up for adlibbing some silly lines for this it would be amazing if you got in touch.

CaptainD

@Eggie - do you mean writing some lines, or voicing some lines you've written?

yamipanda

I have a fun idea I've been working on a bit. But I'm not sure if I'll be able to finish in time. I haven't worked that much with AGS yet, and there are still lots of beginner stuff I've yet to learn. We'll see how it goes. :)

I've got a game I've been making for this that I've almost finished, so hopefully I'll make this one.

I started this on the 23rd, so I've set myself a bit of a challenge. I know I've said it a bunch of times, but I made Reality Check 3 in a week. I'm also off work for a bit so I have a lot of spare time.

EDIT: It's going to be called Moustache Quest!

yamipanda

The case of the stolen moustache
So this is the first game I've actually finished with AGS. You play a PI and get hired to find a guy's stolen moustache.

TomatoesInTheHead

I too have something in the making. I already cut some corners, but there's no way I can finish it in time. :-\
Any chance for an extension?

Retro Wolf

#17
I was a bit naive saying I could pull it off in a week.

I don't have the right to ask for an extension, what with being late to the party. So good luck everyone! ;)

Edit: Right I'm being hardcore! I may be able to pull it off, even if I have to submit it at one minute to 12.

Here's my entry all ready. I hope my use of the theme isn't too weird... but just play it and see:

Thanks guys!

Ok, Eggie, Dmitry, Cleanic, yamipanda - how is it going? Considering we have two entries finished already, I'll give an extension if one is commonly wanted, as requested by Tomatoes.

Eggie

Eggie here, using the office computer in a way that is not allowed!
I am also planning on being finished tonight no matter the cost on body or soul. Pah to your extensions I say, PAH!

Dmitry Stefantsov

Hi guys! I vote for an extension :) I care about my body and soul :) And some more time for polishing wouldn't be bad at all.

HanaIndiana

I just played 'Case of the stolen moustache' and 'Bruce Quest', and so far these are some awesome games!
@Krazy, the voice-acting and dialog had me cracking up. I don't...I mean... just wow.
@yamipanda, I really liked your dialog too. I envy people who can write funny dialog.

@Oldschool_Wolf - Hardcore! Hope you finish in time.

I think... I might just be... I'm pretty darn sure I'm...
DONE!!

Huge, huge, HUGE thanks to Krazy, Bluke4x4, HanaIndiana (who has nothing to envy on the writing funny dialogue front btw), Oraxon, CaptainD, Claudie and non-forum peeps Ed Atlin, Ollie Wells, Natalie Vincent and Rob Turner for knocking it out of the park with voice-acting for which they came up with THEIR OWN DIALOGUE (IT'S BARELY EVEN MY GAME AT ALL I'M A FRAUD)!! You guys are all awesome and really took this weird idea and made it into something special! :)

This game might not look like something that took a month at first glance but please, please, when you've finished... Play it again.

Retro Wolf

CaptainD

Congrats to everyone who finished their game!!  On time, even! :-)

Retro Wolf

Thanks CaptainD! I'm going to bloody bed!

Bluke4x4

Oooooh I'm so close to being done with mine... What's this talk about extensions?

Dmitry Stefantsov

#28
Hi guys! This talk about extension has driven us to think carefully about our third project. So many ideas just appear when you are thinking about some extra time, it's incredible! :) We want to finally make something polished, and we've done so many things for the Dali game that we don't want to produce something of a low quality in a hurry. So, we'll definitely post our game when it's done, with or without an extension. You just have to wait a bit more for it :)

Anyway, I wish good luck to all the competitors this month!

Atelier

Ok, considering we had four entries in before the deadline, I think that original deadline should stay. Sorry to Bluke and Tomatoes - I hope we'll eventually see the (unrushed) final version!

The competition has now ended and voting is underway.

VOTE

Eggie

Not voting obvs but THOUGHTS:

yamipanda
: Cute and funny first game and, most importantly; not broken. The way you've used flags and dialogues that change as the story progresses show a pretty strong understanding of what this engine can do so I'm looking forward to a larger game from you
Krazy: My good friend Alex Scobell recruited me and a host of other non-Australians to do the voice-acting for this game thus completely stealing my idea of high-concept voice-acting. Before Play It Again only low-concept voice-acting was a thing. I'm not partial but I think the drawings are pretty and the writing makes me laugh a lot and I want this one to win
Oldschool_Wolf: It finally happened... a game with TOO MANY Monkey Island references. Too many! There were just too many! That niggle aside; lovely clean art, lots of fun attention to detail (I loved the 'boosting your confidence before asking the girl out' part) and certainly the best entry for delivering a well designed, traditional puzzle-solving experience. I still want Bruce Quest to win. Vote Bruce Quest!

The Case of the Stolen Mosutache: I enjoyed the dialogue, I look forward to seeing your future works as you progress with AGS.

Bruce Quest: I loved the artwork! Reminded me of Spumco's Ren and Stimpy. I also very much enjoyed the dialogue and acting of the main character.

Play It Again: I'll admit at first I was thinking WTF?! Then I got into it, played around with the multiple characters. I'm glad you included the prompts and the background information, it made me appreciate the work that went into this, I actually found it a very humorous and inspirational project.
My only concern is that people won't "get it", I'm thinking of the uncultured rabble that hangs around on Game Jolt.
Eggie, your game is my pick to win.

@Eggie: Now you mention it there are a few too many references to Monkey Island :-[, I honestly don't know what I was thinking!
It just kind of happened in the rush to finish the game, there was no time to stop and think. That aside, I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Good luck guys!

selmiak

So I just voted. Some very diverse entries in this months mags, very interesting.

miguel

Just voted as well. Congrats to everybody, like Selmiak said it was...diverse, but very entertaining.
Working on a RON game!!!!!

yamipanda

Thanks for the positive feedback. I was really nervous abut submitting the game. I suppose my skills are better than my self-esteem. :P

Congrats Krazy!

Eggie

Congratulations Krazy, you are my pal and you make cool things and deserved this!

Yami, I'm here for you. Let's be here for each other. We can get through this.

Retro Wolf

That was a close one! Congratulations Krazy!
Too many bloody Australians on this forum! ;)

Krazy

Oh man thanks everyone for voting for my lil ol game! It's very humbling to be the winner! Great job to everyone else, this was a great month for MAGS. The Case of the Stolen Moustache by yamipanda had some pretty funny writing. Same for Moustache Quest by Oldschool_Wolf, that was also a very cute little game (was the Hare net pun intentional?)! Play It Again: An Improv Point & Click Adventure by my good pal Eggie (the voice of Bruce) was really great and I think everyone should give it a proper try if they haven't. There's so much funny improv (some by me!) in that game and you get a different experience every time! It was definitely the coolest high concept idea of this whole month and I don't wanna see it under-appreciated!

Goodness, thanks again everyone! Good on ya, ya bloody big bonzer beauties!

Congrats to Krazy and well done everyone else too!
These are exactly the kind of moustachy games I was hoping to see when I set the guidelines.

Retro Wolf

@Krazy: It was accidental, but I soon realised what I'd done!

@Hobo: I actually didn't shave for two weeks to prepare for the competition!
