Topic: 'Oceanspirit Dennis'

This month's guidelines were set by icey:

The rule this month is simple. Create a game set in the Oceanspirit Dennis universe (or "Oceanspiritverse", if you're one of the OSD faithful (or Oceanspirit Denniverse if you're Monkey_05_06))!

If you know nothing about the second greatest AGS open source series (RON being the first, of course), then feel free to check out the Oceanspirit Omnibus. It's your one-stop link-fest to all things Dennis. Plus, almost all of the existing OSD games are open source, so you'll have plenty of ready-made assets on hand to help you make your game -- A rare break from the usual DIY MAGS format!

So what are you waiting for? There are tons of untold tales waiting to be... um... told... (that was a bit awkward. I must remember to fix that before I post this)! How did Dennis and Life Partner Ray first meet? What became of Square Penis' sinister plot? Why is Hansel such a douche? Where do all those blobs come from? Why do Zebra Cats never listen when you tell them?

We'll only find out if you get involved and help us get to the bottom of these and other mysteries!

So if you've always wanted to try your hand at the OSD universe or if you've started an OSD game in the past but never finished it, here's your chance. Atelier is letting me host MAGS this month and I'm throwing all the rules out! (Well, most of them, anyway)!

Ending 30/11/11

Beware! Legal boilerplate that Atelier is making me post follows!

What is MAGS?

MAGS is a monthly competition for all amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to create a game in under a month, following the rules set by the previous winner. It aims to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, or provide a kick-start into making adventure games. Regardless of skill, MAGS is for everyone. Voting is based on "favorite" games, and not the most artistic, or the best coded. If you have bad art skills, use it as a chance to do some graphic work. If you're sub-standard at coding, use it as a chance to give scripting a go. Ultimately, people will vote for the most enjoyable entry.

You may get help for the competition, although you must end up doing something yourself. You should however be warned that it proves difficult to organize a big team within thirty days. You are not allowed to use material already created before this competition. Your game must be completely new! (<-- Ignore this part! ) Music and sound is an exception; you can use free material that is available to the public, if you wish. Modules and templates are also allowed. Please do not enter the competition with a rushed entry (a game created last minute). Sure, you can make a game and rush it - but don't do this just to win by default.

Good. Now that we have that stuff out of the way, here's the important stuff you need to know:

Entering MAGS is simple. First, conceptualize your game following the month's criteria (see top). Second, create your game fueled only by coffee. Third, finally, and most importantly, post your game here, including:

* A working download link.
* The title of your game.
* A suitable screenshot.

At the end of the month, the all-important voting will begin! This period usually lasts fifteen days. Should you win, along with announcing the next month's rules, your name and game will be immortalized in the MAGS Archive. For more information visit the Official MAGS website.

And most importantly, have fun!

Why stop there? Be a part of it, Icey. You're the one who picked the theme, after all. Get out there and give MAGS your Icey fresh best!  ;)

Icey

I didn't know I could enter! However I don't think I will have the time because of, well- you know.

It's an OSD themed MAGS, Icey. It's the theme you picked! And it's open source!! Half the work is already done for you!!!

If you don't create at least a teeny, tiny game for this, I may not let you join us at the "cool kids" table in the AGS cafeteria when CJ rings the lunch bell tomorrow. The choice is yours, Icey.  ;)

Icey

You make a good point. I will join this party and become king!(or something close to that :D)

Darn right you will. Ben304 and I vouched for you. We told all the other kids you were cool. Don't let us down, Icey.  8)

Ghost

Dammit Jannit! I shall be part of this with a awesmoe tale which will be epic and also elliptic, and... yeah. Count me in!

Sorry, but i dont agree with the above statement.
Cause Maniac Mansion Mania is in fact the greatest and biggest AGS open source series, with more as 100 Episodes so far.
I had to point that out, so no offense and good luck with the oceanspirit Theme.  :)

Ponch

Ah ha! You are correct, Rocco. I should have said "original content" open source series. Thanks for correcting me and please feel free to make an OSD meets MMM game.  ;)

Two entries so far... any more?? The resources are all there, and it doesn't matter how shoddy the game is! :D

LUniqueDan

I totally missed the whole Oceanspirit Dennis trend. I guess I'm less Hipster than you psychothalassodyonyssians OSDers, but I MAY have a cool idea. Still have a lot of games to play at first.

BTW, Ponch : WTF ObjectOn[1] ?!? Who still use that?  :P
"I've... seen things you people wouldn't believe. Destroyed pigeon nests on the roof of the toolshed. I watched dead mice glitter in the dark, near the rain gutter trap.
All those moments... will be lost... in time, like tears... in... rain."

I do! I started in 2003 with AGS 2.56d, and I've learned no new tricks since then.  ;)

Still plenty of month left. I hope to see a few more entries before this is over.  ;D

Also is there a limit to how many games you can make? I just had that idea.

I'd say you should only submit one MAGS per contest. Any more and you would just be showing off, Icey.  ;)  ::)

Yes!

Thank you icey. And Ghost your sprites will be more awesome!

Icey

No prob. Just trying to get the comp going.

Radiant

I've got a simple but fun idea that would work if somebody could draw a handful of OSD sprites for me. PM me if interested.

Well, that's strange. I actually like doing this!
Time for the reveal. Exuse the poor quality of the in-game screenshot. (It's intentional!)

OSD: Heroics In The Nick Of Time!
Oceanspirit Denise (small typo, big difference!) is in trouble! The Blue Brothers have kidnapped her WhooHoo parter Rei, and threaten to pep-talk her to teh deaths!
Fortunately, they need ten turns to charge that move.
UNfortunately, OceanSpirit Denise has only her weakest SarahKay-Blade at her disposal.
Can OceanSpirit Denise rig the rules and save WhooHoo partner Rei?
So that there can be WhooHoo?

I think I'll make it to the deadline...

I made it- see below!

Ponch

Another entry! And another member of the Oceanspirit family! Awesome!

Now let's have a few more. The month's only half over. Plenty of time, people!  8)

Ponch

Woot! Another game for MAGS! This means I am almost a successful host! Another entry or two, and I'll feel like my life wasn't lived in vain!  :D

Ponch

Two days left! I hope a few of you are in crunch time to make the deadline!  :=

Icey

Come on Radiant, if there was a time to enter it'd be now  :o

Ponch

Awesomes! I can't wait to get home and play it.

In fact, there so much awesomeness in this thread, I'm afraid that my own little OSD game will pale completely in comparison when I upload it tonight.  :-[  :=

Icey

Yeah that's 3 now all we need is the forth.

For some reason I can't get the game to run right. I keep getting this black screen then when I drag the window I get a still shot of the game.

Ponch

First introduced in Mighty Pirate, Dennis' small mouse companion has yet to have his own game... Until now!

The Mouse Who Overslept
Mr. Cheeses has awoken to find his best friend is missing!

Join the bravest little mouse in the Oceanspiritverse as he embarks on a tiny yet epic tale of love lost and regained. Along the way you'll see what goes on inside Dennis' ship and you may even learn a valuable lesson or two about friendship and why you shouldn't abuse the snooze button on your alarm clock.

All that and more awaits you in this heart warming, child's storybook-styled game. CLICK HERE to begin the smallest adventure of all.  :D

Which game is that?

It probably depends on your windows version and the AGS version used? I recall hearing this issue before, so check the Tech forum.

So that's four games, and I just spent the last hour enjoying (and finishing) all of them. Any other participants?

Now I has a sad. Yours is the only game I can't beat. I can barely get above 25%. :P

Still, watching Dennis bust a move never stops being funny. Kudos to you and Icey. That game brings a smile to my face.  :D

The goal is 60%. Practice makes perfect!

I managed to beat level one, but that flurry of symbols at the end of level two is too much for me.

I'm going to need the game to open source after MAGS so I can do some elite hacking and slow level two down a bit. ;)

Oh man, I can't believe you did a competition without Nemo and I even though we made THIS  :'( :'( :'(:

OceanSpirit Dennis has finally made his way out of the uterus dimension he was so cunningly trapped in! But being in the uterus dimension has left him vaginified! OceanSpirit Dennis must obtain the help of some mysterious and powerful ladies in order to LOSER HIS VAGINITY!

FIGHTS!!!!

Ponch

STOP THE PRESSES!

There's still a few hours left in November according to GMT. And we have a last minute entry!

Atelier! Get in here and add this to the ballot! Do it for democracy, man!!  ;D

Ghost

It's a Teh Furious Five, only with AGS games instead of kick-ass annimels! Ghost approves + 5!

Icey

@Ponch: Thanks, I had a hard time coming up with funny dance moves but hey I pulled it off. I would still like to help out with the game from time to time radiant. :)

@ben: At last the 3rd in that crazy OSD quest.

Snarky

Plotting my OSD game, with its strict adherence to continuity and its commitment to reference every other game in the series, has been getting a lot harder over the last few days. Damn you! Damn you all! >:(

Tabata

Hey â€" it was about time for a mouse-game! Thank you Ponch!

Mice are the only real heroes and everyone should know,
that those little fellows have the biggest heart thinkable
(and for their beloved they fight like a lion), but not a lot of
people are able to keep a friendship with a mouse!

Obviously OSD isn't that crazy as it is always been told to us  ;)

...   soooo cute <3

Atelier

Sorry all for the big balls up. Now there's a bit of a problem so I'd like a consensus from all participants: 7 votes were cast for different entries before I added Ben's entry. Shall we count these as void and start again, or continue as-is?

For voting please visit the MAGS site or make your choice right here:

The Mouse Who Overslept by Ponch
OceanSpirit Dennis LOSERS HIS VAGINITY by Ben304 and Nemo
OSD: Heroics In The Nick Of Time by Ghost
OSD Sorta 99% by icey games
Dennis Dennis Revolution by Radiant

Please vote only once and be sure to have played all games before sending your voice! Good luck to all participants.

Ponch

Atelier: The only fair thing to do is give those 7 votes to Ponch. As co-host of this MAGS, he clearly deserves them. Then let everyone vote again (Ponch will just have to nobly bear the weight of those extra seven votes on his broad, heroic shoulders).

Snarky: Don't worry about continuity. In OSD, there isn't any. In fact, if you'd played Icey's game, you'd already know the exact number of OSD universes so far. ;) (By the way, Icey: congrats on that game. I liked Dennis' coat and the game didn't crash once!)

Tabata: Dennis is crazy, he just has a soft spot for Mr. Cheeses.  ;)

Icey

Thank you ponch.

Also just a heads up Mog.net has a OSD game he want's to enter before the end of the night. He also said he doesn't care about the current votes and still wants to enter.

ThreeOhFour

I'm cool with the 7 previous votes still being kept! (doubt our game will change anyone's mind anyway) :=

Ponch

Icey: If Mog can get the game in before midnight ,his time, then I'm fine with its inclusion in MAGS, I guess. But that's really up to Atelier. He's the one who has to add it to the ballot.

Otherwise, tell him to enter it anyway. At least it will get an honorable mention for "missing the deadline by that much."  :)

Radiant

Wait, so regardless of which game wins, Icey took part in creating it?  ;D

Icey

I only helped with big parts of coding and I drew a few things her and there. The games foundation is the source for OSD before the recent one. I don't take no extra votes cause of helping him or you as those belong to you guys. I like assisting people especially when it comes OSD.

I think seven votes distributed on four game isn't much of a headstart; continue as-is.

Thanks, happy to hear that you guys liked it. And now I get what radiant said so yeah I am teh oceanspirit winner :D jk

And also let's not forget our brave co-host for starting up the topic in such a fun and well explained way. ;)

Ponch

Thanks, Icey. I didn't my best.

Also, how do I defeat Last Boss? Is there a score I have to reach? I'm stuck.

Lastly, six games for MAGS! Woot! \o/

Icey

The game takes after OSD 1. Instead of using all four attacks once you must use all 7 cards 5 times each. You can play and play to get the more score points and then post them on the games comment page.

Atelier

The votes basically stayed exactly the same, so resetting the poll had no effect anyway :)
