Title: Sprite Jam April 2-9: Under the Sea! (WINNER ANNOUNCED)
Post by: MashPotato on Sun 02/04/2006 19:32:07
Imagine an adventure game that takes place entirely under the sea--what kind of characters would there be?Ã,  A talking clam...?Ã,  An octopus in a bowler hat...?Ã,  Make up an underwater sprite!

Restrictions:
max size: 200x200
max colours: 24
use your imagination--no copyrighted characters (eg. you can make a mermaid, but not Ariel)

Hope you have fun with it, and if you have any questions, fire away! ^_^

I need that gold thingy! ... So here is my entry:
75x125 and just 8 colours.

Rork might look like a sweet friendly shark, but don't trust him - sharks are sharks and they allways bite!

Now give me the shiny little gold man!!!

Great sprites hehe I think putting the trophys in your sig will rock.

Just remember the trophys Buloght and I made were custom made so this means that the guy that hosts the jam must make an award you a trophy.

95x195 13colors

Did some minor changes added colors.

Here it goes:

Edit: Damn, I forgot about that Spongebob and his cronies! I hope my entry doesn't resemble Patrik too much and still counts. Not that it would do any difference anyhow seeing that funtastic seahorse!

Well, I'm a gal, but your point is understoodÃ,  ;)... don't worry, I already started on trophies yesterday (it wouldn't be fair for me to get Buloght's cool warrior trophy and not make some for the next winnders, right? ^_^)

But a question: does everyone really plan to put trophies (if giving trophies becomes a new custom) in their signature?Ã,  If so, I will have to shrink mine down a bit (it's not a problem, but just let me know ^_^)

By the way, all the entries so far are great, but I'll say my specific comments at the endÃ,  :).Ã,  Keep up the fabulous spriting, everyone!

EDIT: Corey, unfortunately copyrighted characters are not allowed, so that can't be an entryÃ,  :(
(and the picture looks... suspicious :-\)

I just knew I would get some gay response like this. I didn't steal an image just like that. Thought I must admit I use a similiar image to make the pose.

It's obviously indexed, not hand pixelled. Next time you should trace it and clean up the artifacts instead of just shrinking it down.

I remember when Sprite Jams actually contained sprites ...

Corey ... you really must be learning impaired.  It's pathetic.  I asked you after your first pointless post not to make pointless posts in the competitions board, then you post again.  I send another PM explaining why you shouldn't do it ... AND YOU DO IT YET AGAIN.  Remarkable ... truely remarkable.

People ... if you aren't going to enter the competiton, would you please FOR THE LOVE OF HOLY GOD ABOVE just not post in here?

Am I the only one that finds 4 entries out of 60000000 posts irritating and pointless?

To avoid being hypocritical:
Amy the amoeba, princess of the quantum realm of the underseas ...

Now give me that trophy.

Thanks, Darth ^_^

It seems the general consensus is that people want signature trophies, so I will make some that can fit in the signature (max 50 pixels high, is that right?)

Keep the sprites comin'!

I am angry towards Darth Mandarb

Sea Aliens live under water and only wear suits and fish bowl looking things on their head for protection.

Here's my first entry, and my first sprite ever. Please be kind! Made with The Gimp after I dismissed ArtGem for being too counter-intuitive (amongst other things) and Painter Essentials 2 for being downright useless (to be kind) for pixel art. At least the Wacom tablet comes in handy!

13 colours (14, including background)
100 x 100 pixels
(http://home.planet.nl/~ooije375/ags/april06spritejam-seaweed.gif)

2x as big:

The vicious man-eating seaweed settles at great depths on the ocean floor. It has to since if it would live near the beach, it would not survive the first ebb. Say what you will about Darwin but at least he got some essentials right!

The seaweed catches it's prey by hypnotizing it, luring him within reach of it's sharp tentacle fangs before proceeding to rip the poor fella to shreds.

The seaweed also hopes feverishly that evolution (or the graphics artist) will give it a mouth to ingest it's prey through, or Darwin'll catch up with it pretty darn quick after all.

The copyright status of Lovecraft's works is complicated (see the Wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H._P._Lovecraft#Intellectual_property)). Cthulhu is in the public domain unless 1. August Derleth got the copyrights from Lovecraft. 2. Derleth renewed the copyrights some time between 1947 and 1978. He probably didn't do either.

In any case, Lovecraft's willingness to let others use his creations, and the influence of his work on popular culture, has disseminated his original elements so widely and created so much precedent that you could probably get away with pretty much anything under fair use.

I have no idea what I just created, but here goes:

15 colors, 171x119 pixels.
(http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/whale.gif) (1x)

(http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/whale.gif) (2x)

And if no one else is going to be nit-picky: While being an amazing image, Stefano's entry is actually taller than 200 pixels and has too many colors (at least the one with a bg)

I went by the one without a background... it's 24 colours (which is fine) and 23 pixels too high (once you trim away the dead space).  I was planning on letting it pass since it didn't seem the other entries were too pressed for space (most were well under the limit), and so it didn't seem to give Stefano a really big advantage to have a little extra space ^_^.  If anyone thinks that is unfair, please say so before the close of the competition...

Post by: MashPotato on Sun 09/04/2006 20:21:37
Wow, this turned into a very lively jam, with more than twenty sprites! (maybe the prospect of trophies had something to do with it… ^_~ )Ã,  Ã, My thanks to everyone for participating ^_^.Ã,  Ã, It was very difficult to choose winners… it may sound cliche, but it's true!

Before I announce the top three, as promised I will comment on each entry and show how hard it really was for me to choose… feel free to scroll down and skip this if you don't care (quite likelyÃ,  ^_^)

Relentless:Ã,  a fabulous way to start things off.Ã,  Rork's got great expression and personality, and as Bartimaeus said, “man that's a cool shark”

Buloght: I dig your cartoony style... your mermaid pair was great, but the king's pot belly made it even better ^_^

Afflict: How on earth did you come up with the idea of making a clown seahorse?Ã,  Creative ^_^.Ã,  I like how his tail ends up as a single big shoe… the snail you did later was neat too!

Mad: Besides both being starfish, your character doesn't resemble Patrick at all.Ã,  I love how you incorporated the features of Elvis (especially the poofy hair and lips) into the starfish.Ã,  He is adorable!

Darth Mandarb: Elegant in its simplicity…Ã,  ^_~

Geoffkhan: This made me laugh (in a good way)!Ã,  What a face… and the poor guy only has 4 legs…

Mordalles: At first glance I was confused, but then I read the description and saw the eyes ^_^.Ã,  That would be an interesting game, and the character has a built-in place to store their inventory items...

Big Brother: a beautiful sprite, but an old entry… so no dice ^_~

Victor: Rocky's disgruntled expression makes me smile… and I like the guest appearance of Amy the amoeba

Nikolas: that enigmatic orb certainly has a sense of mystery about it… WHY is it just sitting there?Ã,  Hmm…

Peder Johnsen: I liked the ironic twist of how he does breathe underwater, and has to open his glass bowl to breathe ^_^

Clip: Just too cute!

Stefano: Mr. Web and Anne are beautifully drawn, creative, and have personality… they're a triple threat!Ã,  Ã, The old guy's toothy grin as he marries his trophy wife is priceless ^_^.Ã,  Thank you for the re-size as well

Lo_res_man: Another entry that made me smile.Ã,  Shouldn't a terrafish live on land, though? ^_~

T-bag: So cute…!Ã,  His teeny little fins popping out of his button-down shirt…!Ã,  His happy little smile…! (*lol* I'm being such a girl)

DutchMarco: I really like this ideaâ€"how it hides among the regular seaweed as camouflage… nicely done

Drawken: lovely line-art and detail… his vaudeville outfit is nice touch, and his expression suits it perfectly

Gilbot V7000a: a mer-shrimp? A mer-lobster?Ã,  In either case, cool ^_^

Anghellic: I'm glad to see you got your sprite in on time after all … no game taking place under the sea would be complete without a human skinny-dipper to get eaten by Rork the shark or the man-eating seaweed ^_^.Ã,  The facial expression mixed with the position is hilarious

Anym: a squid ninjaâ€"that's just an awesome concept…

Tomas: I'll tell ya what you just createdâ€"a nice-lookin' whale with a spiffy tophat ^_^.Ã,  I'm glad you squeaked him in just before the deadline

----

Without further ado, here are the winners…

Stefano wins the Dolphin of Gold (http://crabshack.bythegoddess.com/ags/TrophyDolphin.gif)

Relentless wins the Fish of Silver (http://crabshack.bythegoddess.com/ags/TrophyFish.gif)

Mad wins the Starfish of Bronze (http://crabshack.bythegoddess.com/ags/TrophyStarfish.gif)

…it was very close, and there were lots of entries that were just as deserving to be in the top three, but a decision had to be made… and to show my appreciation for all your hard work and terrific entries, all participants get a bubble trophy ^_^ (http://crabshack.bythegoddess.com/ags/TrophyBubbles.gif)

Once again, thanks for all the wonderful spritesâ€"it was a great and very tight competition ^_^.Ã,  I'm looking forward to the next one… take it away, Stefano!

Wow this was a great sprite jam.
And I'd just like to add that these trophies are an awesome idea. It'd be cool to have them all the time and give people a small insentive to enter - and not just sprite jam either.

Good job everyone.
:D

Oh man, I was like half-way through an entry ;_; That's what I get for participating in a huge local Japanese festival and getting seriously drunk and having insane amounts of fun rather than sitting at my laptop all weekend.

Good stuff everyone! :D Hopefully my life is dull enough that I can join in on the next one.

Yay! I won the Golphin of Gold! It was very thoughtful of you to comment each sprite AND create trophies. Thanks a lot for your kind words...

Congratulations stefano! and the runners-up, deserved winners.

Thanks a lot Buloght. What are you talking about? Your trophies were great! ;D

I'm taking it away right now, so stay tuned for the brand new sprite jam and - as I agree they made the sprite jam much more interesting - new shiny trophies. So, enter the next one. There will be trophies! Yay!

Kinoko,
Sprite Jams are part of life's fun. So, make no excuses: drop the booze and hop in on the next one, girl!  ;D
