Title: Sprite Jam May 17-23: Dwarves
Post by: Klaus on Wed 17/05/2006 11:53:38
They are working as miners, some are famous fighters and others are nice little helpers. Some have a long beard and most of them wear a big cap. You know them from books, fairy tales and from your neighbour's garden...

Topic: Dwarves

Rules:
- create an original, playable character
- maximum number of colours is 32 inclusive transparency
- sprite size must not be larger than 60x80 pixels
- any kind of dwarf is allowed (except giant dwarves :))

I hope you enjoy this Jam. Good luck and have fun!

I like dwarves so I made one.

In 12 colors, meet Harry Tabarge!

and his 11 color c-64 counterpart

Both are low color enough (but with large enough proportions) to make a nice adventure game character.

Can I draw a character from a book? I mean it isn't drawed in the bokk itself but the character is discribed in the book so I could easily draw him. Is that allowed?

EDIT:
His name is Orik he is a character from books called 'Eragon' and 'Eldest' he is a member of dwarf clan called Durgrimst Ingietum

He is not drawed exactly as the book discribed and its 21 colors

Yaharr, as an old dwarf maniac I'm so in! You know, my dad translates fantasy to Finnish, all the Weis-Hickman, Salvatore, Gemmel etc books. I used to like them when I was young, now I realized how empty they are and my dad agrees. Added that I also had quite a collection of those Warhammer dwarves... Oh yeah, and I used to draw this comic about the angry dwarf that would go about killing people :P

Taking the "whole" idea from a book wouldn't be original then. But you can use the description for your inspiration and enchant it with your own ideas.

OK. She's meant to be a Pirate Chef Dwarf. Apart from she doesn't look very Dwarf like. So uh, you can decide Klaus.

Although rheumatoid arthritis and Alzheimer's disease don't make things easier, Grams Digwinkle is still mighty crafty with the ole pick axe. But what ever you do, don't mention his age, or he'll treat your shin to his metal capped boot!

I second jasonjkay's suggestion: Better redraw him. He's drawn good but would actually score better in the orc contest...

True, the smiley seems to be confusing. Sorry. It wasn't meant to be a joke... If you don't have time to draw another character I'll simply put my screen on the floor then so your large dwarf also looks small ;)

Wow that's a really big number of entries and all so nice. How can I decide who's to win?
So first of all many thanks to all participants for these creative sprites.

ProgZmax: An old school adventure character - just like in the good old days ;)

KristjanMan: A very good start for a whole game based on "Eragon" :)

Privateer Puddin': I hope she didn't use her leg for some cooking experiments ;)

vict0r: A hard working guy. Be "careful with that axe, Eugene" ;)

sir_gibberishbuloght: Muscles and cool equipment - what a combination :)

S-Made: Small and angry. This actually IS a dwarf :)

Mad: Grams Digwinkle might be old experienced, but your sprite is in good conditions :)

Saberteeth: In his red suit he does not need to care about blood :)

yodaman11111: Good to see people also remember the classic dwarf with cap and beard :)

Rap4Life42o: I wonder if a girl would want him to spin straw into gold at all. So a sword's the better choice :)

El_Drey: He is taking good care of his beard. That's what dwarves should do :)

jasonjkay: Nice sprite but - as we now know - not original :(

MashPotato: His clothes look pretty clean for a hard day's battle :)

Pablo: A salesman? I guess he'd be luckier if he got a job in a mine :)

Krysis: I also like this red/green combination you used :)

Strange Visitor: Surely he's doing a good job as a decorator :)

Clip: He looks a little pale but I like the colours :)

As almost every entry's worth to win I started to search "real" dwarves among the entries: Do I see the character as a dwarf or just as a smallsized human, a troll, a gnome or an orc? It's not about the absolute size or skin colour, it's more about physical proportions. So in the end I came up with the sprites from vict0r, buloght, S-Made, yodaman11111, MashPotato, Krysis and Clip.

These are my favourites for a dwarven adventure :) Now to reduce this selection just one more time I went for creativity, style and design. This was really hard to decide and I changed position 3 a number of times. And it was also difficult to define place 2 and 1... But here's my final list:

(http://img45.imageshack.us/img45/7104/dwarftrophyflower5vk.gif) 3rd: The Bronze Flower Dwarf for beautiful pixels goes to MashPotato! (http://crabshack.bythegoddess.com/ags/Dwarf.gif)

(http://img488.imageshack.us/img488/4438/dwarftrophylantern1jk.gif) 2nd: The Silver Lantern Dwarf for shiny ideas goes to sir_gibberishbuloght! (http://img114.imageshack.us/img114/5103/buloghtdwarf6ot.gif)

(http://img45.imageshack.us/img45/8067/dwarftrophymining7ah.gif) 1st: The Gold Mining Dwarf for great work goes to Krysis! (http://img56.imageshack.us/img56/3868/grumpul9jm.png)

Congratulations to the winners and again many thanks for this nice competition.
