This week's rules:

1. Compose music for a love scene.
2. Must contain one (or more) of the following instruments: tuba, banjo, mandolin.. or a duck.
3. Must contain changing dynamics (one part is louder or softer than another)

That's it.. Now whip out your composin fingers!

Peter Thomas

I was actually thinking about this for a theme should I have won sooner or later. I think it's great.

I shall start on it right away.

(Just so you know, that last sentence is purely for personal motivation. Chances are 9:1 that I won't do it until the last day, but by saying that I'll do it now makes me feel guilty when I don't. But that will probably make little difference either :D)
Peter: "Being faggy isn't bad!"
AGA: "Shush, FAG!"

dagnab, Ben is so awesome at making rules!

I really don't think I'll have time for this contest tho.

Ben

GREAT! I think of supurbly awesome rules, and nobody has TIME! I don't mind people being busy, I just don't like it when they're all busy on the same week  :P.

Gregjazz

Hmmm if nobody else enters by the 10th I'll be sure to make a quick little song. :)

The Prince and His Bride

The instrument I chose to use was the tuba. I wanted the duck, but:

1) It wouldn't 'quack' in time with the music, even when I poked it at all the right times.....

2) It was weird trying to incorporate it in with a love theme.

Well - here's a brief breakdown of the score.

Seconds 7 - 47: The princess sits in her tower, looking over the kingdom.

47 - 1 min 17: The prince arrives valliantly at the base of the tower.

The rest of it: The Prince and Princess kiss and have hot sex with one last 'boom' from the orchestra, the screen goes black...

Don't quite know what happened with the recording here... it was strange!! The first 7 seconds are empty (???) and overall it's quite soft. I had to turn my speakers up louder than normal to hear it.

Well, anyway.....

enjoy...

AGA: "Shush, FAG!"

Proof that whining helps motivate people  ;)

Really good work, both of you. I'll write more detailed reviews when the contest ends, but right now I can say that I'm impressed. Even if there aren't any more entries, I'll have a tough time deciding on a winner.. But there WILL be more!

The Scorposer

And there IS more...

The instrument I chose is the Banjo. (There's another instrument from the list in the song; see if you can find it ;) )

One fine day, two young lovers are taking a walk in the park with nothing on their mind but eachother. Then, things get passionate...

Enjoy!

Here is the link to my song.

http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/LoveSOngWithTubareal1.mid

It took me 15 minutes to make.  The first 8 measures make you want to cry.  Then the tuba comes in and kills it.  Then I added banjo as filler, and it all goes downhill from there.
The harp then barely saves it.   You think it;s good.
Then it gets all cry-like again, and you start weeping.
Then the choir comes in and the party starts.
Then I added some Bird Tweets in there to Ultra-Cornify it.

I guess I need to have a story, heregoes:

Some girl is dirt poor, and this one guy is loaded.  Thier parents hate each other.  The girl gets on some balcony and they fall in love.  Then the guy fakes drinking poison, and the girl gets mad and kills herself.  Then the guy takes a happy dagger and kills himself.

My song is really repetitive so don't yell at me for just doing Shift-Insert the whole time.

Enjoy  :)

Time to review the tunes:

Sluggo: I really like this one. It sounds like a classic film score, but it's able to tell the story on its own.. I can picture a man getting on a train to leave town, while the woman he loves emerges from the crowd, and they meet for one filal kiss before he gets trucked off to fight in Germany, where we know he's going to die, because that's what always happens in these kinds of movies.. Er-- that's my take on it, anyway ;) . Overall a really great tune..

Peter: Another great tune. It's got a fairy-tale vibe to it, which could be considered a bit cliche, but I don't think that matters as it fits perfectly with the scene. I don't think you needed to outline the scene with words, because the music says it all-- a feeling of lonliness at the beginning, then a slight glimmer of something in the distance, and the prince's horse trotting up over the horizon, and finally, the guy arriving and climbing up into the tower. You did a great job of telling a story..

Scorposer: Sounds like an old Amiga game :) . Overall, it's quite good. The flute on top of the minor piano chords reminds me of a scandinavian folk song. The banjo works well when it comes in-- so does the duck :P . I guess the only thing that's missing is the story. To me, the music just doesn't fit in with what's happening-- new instruments come in, but the general feeling doesn't change. I like what you've done, though, and I think it's great outside of the love-theme context.

Releasethefrogs: I like the meloancholy feeling in the song. The banjo at the beginning is good, though it's not loud enough (I wouldn't have noticed it if you hadn't said it was there). Solid melody on the harp.. I think the only real problem with this tune is that (like you already mentione) it's repetitive-- it's the same four chords through the whole thing. I do like what you put on top of those chords, but like Scorpser's tune, it doesn't have the dramatic change in emotion you'd expect from a love-themed tune.

And the winner is..

Sluggo!

His tune just stood out from the rest.. Really great work.

Sluggo

Woo! I'll get on the new contest as soon as I can.

Peter Thomas

congrats, sluggo!

good tune, good result  ;D
Peter: "Being faggy isn't bad!"
AGA: "Shush, FAG!"

The Scorposer

Excellent work by all contenders!

And congratulations, sluggo!

Great Job, Sluggo!
Make the next rules set really fun!  :D
I fail at art.

Yellow is a Flavor

Aargh! I started working on mine on the 1st, and only just compiled the finished version today.

Oh, well. Next time, I suppose.

The Scorposer

Why let a good song go to waste?

Post it!  :)

Peter Thomas

Yes.... it's not like there's a new contest we have to be working on... *nudge nudge sluggo...*
Peter: "Being faggy isn't bad!"
AGA: "Shush, FAG!"

Sluggo

Sorry about this, but I have a good idea and it looks like it'll take me a day or two more to get everything together. If you don't mind I'll continue with this idea.  ;D

Peter Thomas

???

I guess I'll just have to trust you, sluggo ;D

It better be good... ;) 8)

I use too many smilies...
