Hello everyone. This is my first post on this forum - and my first finished game.

Here is a brief description:

Danny Charlton wants to be a poker star. The only problem is he doesn't have a clue how to play the game. Worse still, he hasn't got the heart to learn...

In Ace King, a traditional point-and-click adventure game in the style of the later Leisure Suit Larry titles, you play as Danny, as he receives an invitation to play in the infamous Mann Steak tournament at the Double Down casino in Las Vegas.

But, as his fellow competitors start to go missing, Danny soon discovers that it's going to take more than just a good hand to achieve victory.

As I said, I have enjoyed playing AGS games, and I have always been a big fan of point-and-click adventure games. Ace King is traditional point-and-click game, inspired by the Leisure Suit Larry series. I have been learning AGS as I went along, so I suspect there may be the odd bug in the game. I have included my email address in the link if anyone is inclined to let me know.

The game contains some bad language and mild violence.

Thanks

Congrats on the release... :-D

... Though, it seems you link is as missing as the players in your game. 8-0

Thanks! Been playing the games and lurking on the forum for a bit. Got inspired after watching yahtzee's ego reviews on YouTube.

I look forward to actually playing more ags games now this is out of way.

I just finished playing it.

I am completely impressed by this game. I cannot get over that it's a first game.

- To me, the strongest part is the puzzles. They are very well designed and at a perfect level of challenge. I definitely found myself almost stuck a number of times but was able to solve all of them on my own with some thinking and persistence other than one that required a hint. Some of the puzzles have quite a number of steps and parts to them and the effort to design something that intricate is just amazing.

- A great attraction of the game is the humour. I have to make it clear that it's not for everyone. There is a lot of crude humour in this game. Although there is a warning in the announcement post, people considering the game should know that there is a lot of sexual references, crude humour, drug use and genital references in the game. Now that I got that out of the way, I found myself laughing a LOT during the game. Well done :D

- Third place was the plot. For the most of it, it was quite intriguing and made me want to proceed to find out what happens next. The NPCs in the game had strong personalities and interesting relationships between them. You've really built quite a mini-world around the protagonist's life, past and present. Interesting blend of silliness and thought-provoking soul searching.

My only complaint about the plot is that at times things got to be a bit TOO weird and desultory.

Things were linear and made sense up to a point but then they just took a left turn and got crazy. Some people might like this but it was just not my preference.

- Graphics, sound, music, effects were quite adequate.

Just to let you know that there are a few small things to be cleaned up, such as key items that do not have a description when you point to them, a label "hotspot 3" or something that should be cleaned up and

one place where Dan's attire changes back and forth for no reason

. I found that some transitions between rooms difficult to find or navigate.

In conclusion, anyone who does not take offense to crude humour will find this game to be quite complete and enjoyable in every way. Once again, absolutely amazing for a first game. I really hope to see more games from his author. Perhaps a sequel!

Well done!

I knew i'd overdone it on the genital references!

Reading this has absolutely made my day. Thanks for your feedback. I agree with all the points you made. If I do another project (I told myself I wouldn't, but I've already been drawing backgrounds) I'll try improve those ares. Can you recall where in the game

I would like to fix that.

Incidentally Danny Charlton is a real professional poker player and a friend of mine.

YAY! I finally have some spare time to download and try this great-looking game!

EDIT #1:

(About 30 hours after downloading and beginning the game)

TOTALLY WTF?!

WHERE DID THIS GAME COME SUDDENLY FROM ALL OUT OF THE BLUE AND ALL?!

I've played for about 6 hours total I think and the number of locations I've been to, the amount of puzzles I've encountered, and the count of cinematic cutscenes are all through the roof!!!

Seriously...How long was this game's development?! I would imagine YEARS of work went into this project, and I even feel that I can sense the author's growth as a story-teller and game dev the deeper I get into the game...

The gameplay is a bit directionless here and there along the way, but hard-core bruteforcing has always worked for me when stuck, which has provided a lot of those enjoyable old-school "What the fuck?! Are you even kidding me?!" moments when the puzzle is solved and progress is made...And, what with the Leisure Suit Larry feel of the game, those moments are quite nostalgic and welcome...

In contrast: Most of the puzzles are very well thought out and some of them approach legendary status...and are nicely foreshadowed in many cases (although sometimes not entirely on purpose perhaps)...

Still playing the game, as I go deeper and deeper down the rabbit-hole of insanity that has become the plot...and loving every minute of it!!!

Thanks so much to the author for this out-of-nowhere instant gem of an AGS game...

(To Be Continued)

Fantastic game!
The puzzles were excellent and the humor really great. Expecially the puzzles and flow thorugh the story make this game standing out. And even though there are a lot of references to Leisure Suit Larry (example: the hobo at the airport), you brought in a new twist. I had a very good time playing it.

I honestly thought no one would play this, let alone finish it so I'm thrilled. Mandle, yes I've been at this for a couple of years. I'd say the first six months or so was written off and I pretty much started again. And as I felt like I was improving with the art or scripting I would go back and redo whole segments.

The source code contains so many rooms/puzzles you won't see in the game because they were redone or not used. I might post some of the pictures of the early attempts on here.
