Title: Al Gurbish in... Nick it & Run!!!
Post by: aussie on Thu 22/05/2003 08:06:12
I just released NIAR, my first AGS effort. It's a medium-length game which originally was intended to be the first chapter of a much larger project.

You can download it now at my website, or alternatively at the AGS site (where it'll be up shortly).

Featuring:

- Some stunning 640x400 resolution hi colour graphics.
- Some not-so-stunning 640x400 resolution hi colour graphics.
- 30 rooms.
- Over 15 characters with a say in the game.
- About 40 inventory items.
- Intro scenes, cutscenes and end scenes.
- Lots of other scenes.
- A number of unknown bugs*

(*I played it through a couple of times from intro to end-scenes and there was nothing wrong with it, but someone is bound come across a bug sometime in the future - please, let me know.)

Feedback on any aspect of the game (puzzles, more than anything) will be thoroughly appreciated.

P.S. By the way, with regard to the graphics... YES, I DO INSPIRE MYSELF ON EXISTING ONES (no lollies for anyone that discovers the park scene at the beginning is very similar to a Willy Beamish one - I don't call it plagiarism, because I'm not trying to get any profit out of the game, it's just a bit of fun  ;D).

Enjoy!  8)

sounds good but at the moment I'm getting this message

"Sorry, this site is temporarily unavailable!
The web site you are trying to access has exceeded its allocated data transfer. Visit our help area for more information.
Access to this site will be restored within an hour. Please try again later.
http://www.geocities.com/pedro_scribe/ "

So I'll try later, but I think you should try anysite but geocities especially if you want to hotlink the game from there. you can't hotlink from geocites unless you use the anonymiser thingy eg.

http://invis.free.anonymizer.com/http://www.geocities.com/pedro_scribe/yourgamefile.zip

something like that.

I can't download from the AGS medium length games for the same reason.

You can't hotlink from most free sites, I use http://www.tripod.lycos.co.uk/
You can't hotlink from there either but you get decent bandwidth and space plus PHP/mysql. That's just a suggestion, other people may be able to help you.

I'm looking forward to playing, when I can d/l it.

Yep, apparently if five people see my website (about 3.5Mb all up)  within an hour, the whole thing get shut down for a little while, that's the bloody bandwith limit.

People are able to dl it, though, because the AGS paga says it's been downloaded five times.

I don't really mind if my page is not hotlinked, because then people go and see it  ;) but I wouldn't mind a more decent bandwith. Did you say tripod lycos or whatever offers you better bandwith?

I'll see what I can do. Anyway, thanks for the tips.

Yeah, it says it has been d/l 5 times but I think 2 of them was me trying to download it and just going to the geocities page. It's just a counter of who clicks on the link.

Fair enough.

I just accessed the page. You might be able to now.

Thanks all.

I think I'm gonna try and move my website to lycos tripod (or whatever is calles) as Tim and Woodz suggested. THe bandwith you get at geocities is pretty crap.

I'll keep you posted.

I got myself a new freewebs site, so maybe I get a bit more bandwith.

Unfortunately, I can't upload files > 750kb until seven days from the moment I get my account, so people wanting to get NIAR will have to keep putting up with geoshitties. :P

Sorry.

There are a couple of us stuck in this game at the same spot.  If you check out the hints section you will see our posts.  Also,  I have found a bug.  You can pick up the metal pole beside Reggie but it disappears in your inventory and the mint appears instead.

Alright, listen up. I've just created a ftp account for AGS games.
Use this.

login: AGS
pass: games
ip: 192.168.1.10
port: 215

Have fun ;)

That's great Jannar, but I'd be careful posting an ftp like that, maybe you should edit your post mentioning it and get people to IM you for the log and pass.

You never know who is lurking around

Well, if you read Roger on #AGS:
This is a service handled by jannar85. You can upload your AGS game, or download one there. (ftp info) Have fun! If you won't follow the rules, you'll be banned. Thank you.

The game is uploaded now btw ;)
The demo as well :P

** edit **
Wow! The game looks fantastic! Maybe I'll write a review for this one... ;)

Jannar is the game upload space free for anyone to use and is there a limit on file size?

Thanks for telling me about the bug, I'll try and get it fixed over the wkd, because you do need the metal bar to finish the game.

Jannar, how does that ftp thing work? did you upload my game somewhere :)?

Ispace,

Sorry, but I couldn't pick up the metal pole until I worked out the puzzle properly (Reggie ends up giving it to you, there shouldn't be such command as "pick up metal bar"). Also, it came up as a metal pole on my inventory. I don't know what's exactly wrong, but it doesn't seem like a bug to me. Could you specify a bit more?

P.S. One thing I have found is that sometimes when the game loads, it "forgets" about stuff, and the when you load it again it works fine. Has anyone had that problem? Would you mind checking for me if re-starting the game again you get the same problem?

Nice gesture, but that's not a valid internet IP address, it's a local LAN address specific to your network, so nobody apart from you can connect to it

I haven't freed Reggie from the curse yet.  I can use the command "pick up metal bar"  and after I do, Al says "I can't reach the key with my bare hands".  It's at this point where it disappears and the mint pops up in my inventory ( I can't scroll down in the inventory to see if it is there).  I've tried saving the game then restarting to see if it appears but it doesn't and the mint is still there.

Also, at the same location if I try "use door" Al says it is open now but I can't get in.

I have in my inventory (before picking up metal bar) the kangaroo, broken glass, half string, other half string, Blues Bother cd, stick with string, HOF ticket.

Since my last post I have moved on and I am almost finished (I think).  Thought you would like to know that up until I actually solved the puzzle dealing with Reggie I was able to pick up the metal pole and only the mint would appear in inventory.  Course once the puzzle was solved properly the metal bar appeared and stayed in my inventory.

Esseb accessed it, but sunday was the last day I could run it, since it was on my brother's computer. Can someone else do it?

Metal bar bug fixed.

I've uploaded the zip file again.

Of course, you could finish the game even with the bug by practising a bit of self control and not picking up the metal bar just like that...

A number of minor bugs (such as Balboa appearing momentarily in the foyer) have been fixed.

Just started playing your game yesterday, and it sure looks great! The graphics are terrific.
Although when I looked at the ticket salesman in the booth, the game crashed.  Better fix that one if you haven't already... ;D
And when you click on "Ver" on the menu, it still says "Night Of The Raving Feminst"...

Great job anyway!

In our quest for extra bandwidth, AussieSoftTM has officially moved to a new website.

Heya,

Just downloaded it and played for a bit.  I like what I see so far - great cartoony graphics and animation.  The only problem I have is that there's too much self referencial humor.  I.e., lots of "Hey look!  I'm in an adventure game! Yuk Yuk" types of jokes.  But the game is certainly more entertaining than most so I'll definitely be playing it more.

Yeah, maybe you're right. That sort of fades away a bit further down the track, as you get more into the plot of the story. ;)

Thank you.

I've come across a bug:
I tried to leave the smoked out hall of fame through the front door, Gurbish said he won't go that way but then when I clicked he just kept saying it over and over and wouldn't move anywhere and I had to use Ctrl+Alt+Delete to get out of the game.

EDIT: I've just found another bug:
If you try to pick the elixer of life up after giving it to Vlad, the game crashes.

Yar!  Just finished the game.  Excellent job!  Nice humor, hard puzzles, and the graphics are the best I've EVER seen in an amateur game, bar none.  Seriously dude - it's the most professional looking game I've seen come out of AGS.  You have a knack for little personal touches that give characters and backgrounds their own unique look.  Very impressive.

As I said previously, the self-reference kind of bothered me but it's no big deal.  The interface seemed kind of clunky, especially on the map screen for some reason.

Anyway, everyone else has already fawned over this game so I thought I'd add my own adoration.  Can't wait to see "Night Of the Raging Feminist!"  :-)

Hey, I just downloaded it and got started.. I'm enjoying it so far, but I had a crashing bug happen so I'm going to have to start over D: .. it crashed me out when i looked at the Blues Brother poster inside Balboa's with the "this is a problem with the game, not the engine" message. Although, I wonder if it doesn't have to do with something else as I imagine someone would have looked at the poster already and had the same problem... hrm..

Post by: aussie on Thu 10/07/2003 09:44:04
Yeah, I don't know why it happens. It's a bit of a random bug. Sometimes it'll kick you out of the game, some other times it'll be ok.

One thing I've noticed from what people write in these forums is that it's probably a good idea to save often when playing NIAR. You can't get killed and there's nothing you can do that will block your path along the game, but I find it's a bit buggy at times and it crashes. Sorry, it's only my first AGS effort.
