Title: Barn Runner 5: The Forever Friday part 2
Post by: Ponch on Sat 01/11/2008 23:58:27
Almost released on schedule, I'm proud to present Barn Runner 5: The Forever Friday 2.

An abandoned mall? Let the looting begin!

This medium length game picks up one hour after the last chapter ended. The mass hysteria of the "Big Crazy" has begun tearing through the city and it's up to our hero, Prick Peckard, to stop it.

Reluctantly saddled with a partner (the very man who is trying to fire him), Prick must venture into the chaos, armed to the teeth and looking for the people responsible for plunging Arc 19: Evansville into an orgy of looting, cannibalism, and utter disrespect for littering laws.

Will Prick survive his mission? Will he find the people responsible? Will his city survive the madness that has claimed so many other cities before it? And how does Welsh crooner Sir Tom Jones factor into all of this? You'll only find out if you download!

Available from TackyWorld Interactive, where the quality of our freeware is matched only by the price!

Congratulations on getting part 2 finished!  I've been looking forward to this.

Thanks! I've put a lot of work into this one and I hope it provides a meatier gaming experience than part one did (which was saddled with the introduction / setup duties that made it a little too talky and a little too lean on gamplay).

And thanks for Liimey Lizard. Awesome theme and I hope the series has a long run!

Just finished playing part 2.  Not sure about side quests.  This is the best one, yet!    Great job!
Awesome, awesome, awesome.  Now to wait for the third part of this great series.  Terrific job!

I don't think this is considered a hint or tip, but I really need to know...

How the heck do I get back out of the hallway leading to Prick's office?  I walked there from the hall near the chief's office, and now I've clicked everywhere along the bottom of the screen, and he seems permanently stuck.  What's the dealio, yo?

Prick can't go back to the lobby outside the Chief's office because Harry is waiting for him there. He has to have both the guns from his (secret) office and the DataLink he left in the briefing room.

You'll revisit that hallway in chapter five, and there will be a little yellow bar on the ground that let's you know where to go to get back to the lobby. But for this chapter, he can't go back until he's ready. (He needs to make a good impression after all).

Hope that helps.

(And thanks for all the nice words guys. I'm glad to know you were waiting for this one!)

All right! I've been enjoying this series ever since I first discovered it a few months ago. I just finished playing this latest installment, and unsurprisingly, enjoyed it. I love the various robot cameos, and
Spoiler
the interrogation scene was especially hilarious.

You continue improving yourself in your games!

The introduction of this 5-2 is very good, and you get very well the provocative girl graphic in the non-political humor

Congratulations for your last game!

PD: I'm continuing figthing with the terrible nigth chickens in 5-1 U_U xDD

Well, I'm gonna give some love to take some. First of all concerning all the games they're fun to play. Second of all, they're my favorite. Third of all, they rock.

But, well, concerning the last game and mostly some of them, well they need ambient sounds and original music, which I'd really beg to do for the next chapter. If the game had the music I have in my mind, it would properly depict the noir sort of style and the 80's that this game's having. PM me if you're interested. Nevertheless, as you usual this one's top notch, and to think yesterday , I just finished playing Forever Friday part 1. Concerning the barn runner if you feel you have to get rid of the name, you can always call the game Forever Friday, but now that seems a bit little late.. 8)

Hope you don;t receive this the bad way..

I hope that's a reference to the dream sequence set to the Tom Jones song. I spent just over 100 hours animating that damn thing. I haven't done that much hand drawn animation in ages and it was a blast to do. I had such a blast doing it, that now I have even more ambitious sequences planned for future games in the Barn Runner series. Kudos to CJ for making an engine capable of creating more than just adventure games. It does cartoons too!

Yeah. I agree. I went with the "silent movie" approach at the start of the series for a variety of reasons. But once the Forever Friday and the 5th Anniversary game are behind me, I plan on making some big changes to the world of Barn Runner. I'm overhauling the character sprites, probably moving up to 800x600, and I might even start using sound f/x. As far as original music, let me think about the offer. The big love scene from part three of Forever Friday is eating up all my free time right now. When the schedule loosens up a bit, I'll pm you and we'll work something out.

Ha!  "Harry Sach"!  I didn't get that until I read your AGS panel review. :)

Just finished playing, went back to see all the endings, great job, man.  The drunk Crow robot was my favorite guy in the whole game.  Hey!

I also noticed, Harry apparently has man-boobs at that one ending.

Thanks for an awesome gaming experience again, I can't wait to see chapter 3!

Thanks! Someone who e-mailed me last month said I have a reverse James Bond thing going on when it comes to naming the guys in my games: Prick Peckard, Harry Sach, Gary Minge. It just amuses me, I guess.

If you look closely, all the MST3K robots have made appearances in the series by this point. That was one of my all time favorite shows, and I like to work it, Star Wars, and Doctor Who in whenever I can.

As far as Harry's chest goes, that was supposed to be big pecs as seen from 3/4 rear profile. But, as you noted in your review, the art tends towards more towards "doodle" than polished. Believe it or not, I used to make good money in commercial art before deciding to spend my middle age years cramming American History into the heads of uncaring students.

With exceptions only for very detailed technical shots (like the exterior shot of the hangar bays in the opening movie of Friday 1), all Barn Runner art is done free hand on yellow legal pads in my spare moments.

Case in point, here's something I drew during lunch a few days ago:

Sketch-tastic!

This is from the game I hope to have finished in time for a Christmas release. This is Debbie in her elf costume, in the middle of a shootout. The sprite will be imported directly from this doodle and, minor tweaks aside, this is how it will look in the game.

I just don't have time to sit down a refine it much, even though I wish I did. Still, I think the Barn Runner games have a pretty distinctive, cartoony visual style.

Thanks for playing (and the nice review) and I'll do my best to get chapter three out next year! And as regarding your review, indeed I do like to draw the ladies (half naked and otherwise). But, hey, I'm equal opportunity. I put the fellas in there too! There's something for everyone in Barn Runner!

I keep National Geographic under my mattress.

Thank you for playing! It would all be a big waste of my time if nobody played the games I made.

I'm hard at work on chapters three (almost done) and five (halfway done) as we speak. Chapter four has been done for a while now. After that, the Fifth Anniversary game will cap this part of the story off and I think I'll take a bit of a break.

ProgZmax and Strange Visitor, I retract my statement. I've put a lot of fan service bits in my games to amuse myself and my play testers, but I may have to draw the line at anything involving midgets and giraffes. The letterbox format I use just wouldn't get everything in frame, you know?

Excellent game. Those keeps getting better each episode. I felt some Larry Vales vibe on this one with the graphics style and some of the humor.  :=
Everything was so much fun!  The dialogues, the puzzles, the story. And of course that clip at the end of it was just amazing.   Best .... Ending... Ever !!   It was so fantasically and proffesionally done. Mad props for that one.
Looking forward to Episode 3... it's not too far now...

Thanks! I put blood, sweat, and beer into that cut scene. It was a hell of a lot of work and I'm glad you liked it.

However, I hate to say this, but Chapter Three is going to slip by a month. It won't come out until March 3. I'm running into a few problems as I smooth out the rough spots for release, so I'm bumping it back a few weeks to give me a little cushion, so I don't have to rush it.

Hope you don't mind waiting a few more weeks.

Thanks for playing,

- Ponch

Just started the game, love how it is drawn and written very much; however I have to point out few things.

1. During introduction the titles are barely visible on b/w screens.
2. I am sorry to say this, but Harry Sach's walking animation is terrible! it looks like a robot or something.
3. There's a walk-behind error in the club (1st suspect part), barman is sticking from beyond that apparatus which is broken.

Thanks for trying my game, Crimson Wizard.

Regarding your comments:

Quote

Really? Sorry about that. On my PC they look okay. Maybe in a future build I'll change the color of the sprites I used.

Quote
2. I am sorry to say this, but Harry Sach's walking animation is terrible! it looks like a robot or something.
Sigh. You're certainly not the first person to tell me this. Harry is an uptight, over-achieving doofus. So I was trying to convey that in a walkcycle that would suggest someone who, as they say, has a steel rod up his butt. It made my girlfriend laugh, but apparently everyone else in the world hates it. I've changed it somewhat for the next Barn Runner game (which you can see in the demo available on my website). Hopefully, that will put this issue to rest.

3. There's a walk-behind error in the club (1st suspect part), barman is sticking from beyond that apparatus which is broken.
Whoops. I'll address that in the next build of the game. Thanks for letting me know.

Hope you enjoy the game (and the rest in the series).

Thanks,

russian family selling burritos there, especially usage of certain obscene language  ;D.

EDIT:
Yay, finished it!
I must say, I am admired by the amount of effort put into near-ending animated cutscene, especially assuming that it does not add much to story itself.
I liked electronic puzzles most of the game (but seriously, they are perhaps nearly only REAL puzzles anyway ;)).
Looking forward next game.

Glad you liked the cutscene. It was a lot of work, but it was fun to do. There's an even larger movie (of a much different sort) at the end of chapter three. Hopefully, there will more of that sort of thing in future games.

Regarding the puzzles, to be fair, the Barn Runner games have never been known for their puzzles (or their adherence to traditional "adventure game" design), being more of a CinemaWare style interactive movie / arcade game most of the time. But the still-in-the-works chapter three is much larger than the usual Barn Runner game and has more of the old-school adventure game feel to it (hopefully). It's been a lot of fun doing something along the lines of the old Sierra or LucasArts games and I hope it's received well by Barn Runner fans when it comes out.

Also,
Spoiler
Prick isn't exactly a common American name either. ;) I just like the name Ivanka.

Next game comes out as soon as I can manage it. Which, at this rate, could be another few months. Sorry. I'm overworked. What can I say?
