Holy underpants batman! It's Just Another Point n Click Adventure (Part 1)
Yes, i have finished a game, well part 1 of a game. I was going to release a demo but i think that 18 rooms is more than a demo, so it's part 1, and that's that.
I started this game about 100 years ago, and only in the last 6 months have i started working on it again, and it's finally ready.
Check out some screenies here:
http://www.geocities.com/lollygobbleblisbombs/CMonkey/Screenshots.htm
And download it here:
http://www.geocities.com/lollygobbleblisbombs/CMonkey/Downloads.htm
Zip file here:
http://www.geocities.com/lollygobbleblisbombs/CMonkey/JAPNCA.zip
Now geocities is a pain (i got shut down last time i put a demo up (many years ago)), so if someone is willing to host the game, i'd be most grateful.
Please make sure you read the readme first, it has some valuable info about the controls. I'm using a LEC style interface, but you can select options with the mouse wheel (if you have one) and via keyboard.
I won't tell you much about the story except that it's a LEC style game, with 2 usable characters (but not at the same time). Here are some stats to make it seem worth the download; the game has...
Rooms 18 (2 Intro, 1 Credits, 15 interactable)
Sounds 65
Flic 1
Sprites 544
Code Over 11 thousand lines
Inventory Items 23 Useable Items
GUI 6 used
Dialogs 24
Views 33
Characters 13 used characters, 8 different characters
Um, yeah so there it is, download it! Tell me what you think, email me, help me, go! Go now! This is your life! and it's ending one minute at a time!
Andrew =0)
man..I wanna get this game..but the download doens't work..
somebody host this man! I am wanting to play!
EDIT: working now..so I am downloading. I'll edit again once I play
EDIT 2: DUDE! This game is pretty cool..in fact, I venture to say that this is one of the better AGS games I've played in a while...(and that's pretty impresive, seeing as I just finished search for the don and keptosh...
I'm stuck..but I'm a moron, and I always get stuck. I'll get unstuck soon.
DAMN! I knew that would happen. It happened pretty quick though. I'd hate for my game to become unpopular because people couldn't download it!
that's, ok just take the Butcher route and email it to everyone... then they'll really hate you
and i loved this demo when i played it, how the mom appeared like Manananannnananannanana
vunderbar
Wow, i didn't think anyone would remember the demo.
That's one of my favorite bits too, but theres another... but i can't say, wouldn't want to spoil it.
It's possible to get the game again, but please go to the Downloads.htm instead of just getting the zip, geocities doesn't seem to like it if people just download files without going to the page and not seeing their adds, capitalist b.... hey! hey! booohuh huh huh haaaa
I checked the intro out, it looks great, I will definately play it. One question though, is there supposed to be music? I dont hear any.
There's no music in the game unfortunately. I was hoping someone woul help me out here ::)
Trapezoid might write music for you. He's good, very good. If you haven't listened to "Don't be like the Sun" at: http://www.agsforums.com/yabb/index.php?board=1;action=display;threadid=3587
Do so now! It's great!
Maybe... I'm not as dependable as M0Ds though. I could probably write a few new songs... Also consider using some songs from my MIDI30 library: http://www.agsforums.com/yabb/index.php?board=3;action=display;threadid=1721;start=0
Also, some music directly from LucasArts games would be cool. http://highland.mixnmojo.com
Some of the music from some LucasArts games would be cool. I love the Monkey Island 2 midi's. How does copyright work with those things? I know i've already used the Indy character, but could take him out given a day or two of animation. It's not like i'm trying to make money off the game though.
That highland link is really cool, i'll listen to those midis to inspire me to work on my game more.
I'm getting the other midi's now, if i want to use any of them, what do i do, just put them in and credit you in the credits?
Yep, also if there are some parts you can't find an appropriate song for, I could make one for you.
As for copyright issues, don't worry about it. There have been several games that have used LucasArts music, heck, play Night of the Hermit for a full blast copyright infringement. LucasArts shut down a couple of MI fan games right before EMI came out, but I believe that's it, so don't worry about it. ;D
I remember this game a while back...I'll be downloading it as soon as I can. I recommend everyone else do the same, because from what I remember, this was very well done.

Hi! I LOVE this game. It's really fun... But I'm stuck!

I got the towel out of the laundry shoot, but I don't know what to do next. I've clicked on everything!!
I managed to solve the batteries part myself. Only..

I think he wouldnt take the battery out till I used the remote on the TV, which was why I didnt get it at first. Did you scrip it like that?
I'm on part 3 now.. car keys!

Spoiler
What were you looking for the towel for in the first place?? You gotta dry the wet floor downstairs with it so you can go down.
I love the dialogs in the game - funny!
Ok, I must have missed something.....
Spoiler
I didn't know the floor downstairs was wet... I definately missed something somewhere! Is there a walkthrough for this game yet, because I'm really not sure what questions to ask!
It should be obvious the floor is wet the first time you go downstairs. If it isn't going down a couple more times will make it more clear, the more you do it, the more outline you can get of what you have to get to get past the stairs bit.
There's no walkthrough yet, i think there's enough clues in there without it. Am i wrong??
If no-ones completed it in like a month i guess i'll put a walkthrough out, but i don't want people to just take the easy way, and use a walkthrough, they'll miss half the work i put into the game
This game looks really cool, I just started it, Ive got to stage 2, I don't need any hints yet, but we'll see
Ditto.
OK.. so I'm retarded and I couldn't get him to go downstairs... I must not have been clicking in the right spot.... ANYWAY..... I'm stuck again :-)
Spoiler
Ok, I got the torch and put the batteries in it. I opened the garbage on the side of the house. I've talked to everybody..... and now I'm just wandering around... What next??
Spoiler
You have to get Catherine off the phone so you can ring the Treasure Hunter Hotline and enter Andrew in the competition.
For starters you want to get rid of Max, blocking under the house. (because if there's something stopping you getting under there you should want to get under there)
If you use the pocket knife on the garbage bag in the bin and try to get the bone (3 times) you can use it on max to get rid of him.
Damn, I finally got stuck, I probably just need a clear head tomorrow but I'll ask for one hint.
Spoiler
I can't find the scrubbing brush, Alistair told me it should be somewhere I think a scrubbing brush could be, and couldn't get it earlier. I've looked everywhere with the mouse. I can't go in toilet or laundry, it's not in the boys rooms, I cant go in sisters room or parents,it's not in attick, can't go in bathroom cause I need the brush, can't go under house, not under my bed, not outside, Thought it might be in garage but not there, not in fridge or freezer or cupbords or sink, not in mailbox or near car or in bushes, I can't jump the fence, not in lounge room or downstairs near front door, not in bin or recycling, not on the clothes line or the drain pipe, I've been looking for an hour and I'm stuck
Which part are you in? I reached the beginning of part 3 and havent started that yet. Cos I dont think I needed to find that item till this point in the game.
Where do I find the torch?
Spoiler
Alistar has it.
And I am stuck in the same place where Timosty is.
I am playing as Alistair and all I have in my inventory is the remote control, the penknife and the batteries. So where do I find the torch?
Yeah. Then I don't really remember.
Spoiler
Maybe in the garage
Thanks, I found the torch.
I'm stuck in the same place as Timosity and Barcik! HELP!!! :-)
I was right, I just had to sleep on it, I figured it out almost straight away today.
Spoiler
You have to use the bathroom cleaner on something
That's a hard but clever puzzle
There's also a bug
Spoiler
You can keep asking your mum for money, and she keeps giving it to you, It shouldn't be a problem though, just letting you know
Okay, now that I have the torch I've been to the cellar and the attic. What do I do next? I have a remote, torch, penknife, hook w/stick and duct tape. How do I get Catherine off the phone? Or is there something else I have to do first??
Spoiler
where does the phone cord lead to
Thanks, didn't see the phone cord the first time I was there. Finally got Catherine off the phone.
Spoiler
as for the brush, i've spent even longer trying to find the keys, thinking logically, if I lost my keys they would either be somewhere in my room, hidden in the couch, in my pocket, or locked in the car, anyone found them?
I found the brush but can't get Catherine out of the shower. I think I need access to the attic again but I don't have anything to reach the hook. Anyone help me out?
Spoiler
The key is where the laundry is hanging. A little mind game with the towels and you'll find them...

Just finished the game. Had lots of fun playing it. thanks CMonkey. Looking forward to the next part.
I finished it finally, with just 1 hint from Barcik, and I really thought I'd tried that, That's what happens when you use a screwed up GUI system like Lucasarts, That is the biggest flaw compared to the simple point and click from Sierra, Having to click 2 or three times just to do 1 simple thing. (mainly the fact you have to move the mouse to the look, open close etc, atleast with the sierra gui you can right click to change.
has anyone thought to use a Lucasarts gui that also includes right click to switch between states, only a logical step)
No offence though, the game is great and well thought out, the puzzles are deffinately challenging, and it kept me wanting to play.
Looking forward to the next part
Edit: btw, I don't think you need any extra help with graphics, the style is great for the game already, maybe just get someone to help with music.
and I played right to the end of credits, what's the password for?
I'll say this once again:
The original LEC verbbar gui support rightclicking. Every object and character had a default verb attached to it that would be highlighted if you held the mouse over them and used if your right clicked. This made it possible to simply rightclick on a character and a door to talk to and open respectively. Also, unlike Sierra games, you hardly ever need to look at anything because of the automatic object description in the verb bar.
Not that the ags lec gui has all that, but I was defending the original one which Timosity was bashing :). Personally I prefer the verb clicking of the verb bar to the endless rightclicking of the Sierra games.
Oh, and great game :). Loved the demo when it was released. Sorry for going OT.

GREAT! Really really good! I enjoyed it a lot! And it's just a demo! I'm waiting to see the full thing!
I'd like to compliment your:
1) Art skils. A lot of detail yai!
2) Designing. Ok puzzles, very good jokes. Made me laugh loudly a couple of times.
3) Scripting. Great use of scripting.
Rock on!
Hey all,
Thanks for all your comments, they've been really encouraging.
Sorry i wasn't able to help with some of the earlier questions, i haven't checked the forum in a little bit, but i'm glad it has been finished.
The password i put in was really just to keep people thinking, you might note that the end of the game was done very late at night, and i went a little nuts.
The GUI system was a big part of the game for me, and also a big headache as there were more options than the typical Sierra style interface. It may be a good idea to switch to that in the next game, but i want to keep the style consistent so will stick with the LEC GUI. I did try to make the GUI more user friendly by letting users use the keyboard to select options, and using the mouse wheel to scroll through (if you read the readme file you would have found this out). I was also debating setting up keys to scroll through the options (e.g. pressing space would scroll through). I also tossed up the idea of letting users configure keys and store them in a config file, but all these things take time unfortunately, and i wanted to get the game out.
I do like the idea of highlighting a 'right-clickable' option when the user moves the mouse over an object or hotspot (such as 'open' for a closed door, and 'talk to' for a character). But it's quite a lot of work, and i haven't figured out a way to do it elegantly with the scripting language. If anyone has done this, or have any ideas how, i would like to know.
Also, i know i could do the graphics myself, but it just means that the it will be some time before the next part comes out. Each background takes about 3 days to complete. 1 to design the initial look on paper, 1 to take it off the page and onto the screen, and 1 to add hotspots, walkable areas, interactivity, and scripting. And that's on a very good week. Also each character takes about a week to do properly, though i am getting quicker at it due to experience now. Scripting takes the longest amount of time though, and that's where i would like to concentrate, because that's where i can put the most personality into the game. I'm still going to try and enlist some arty people if i can.
I definitely need music though i know. I got some good midis off Trapezoid, and am also thinking about pinching some lucas arts music, i did want the music to be as original as possible.
All from me now, thanks again guys.

It would be nice to have the layout of the keys be the same as that of the verbs on the screen, ie
qwe
asd
=
open look at get
close talk to use
in addition to other keys, then no one could complain about scrolling through the verbs
ps
great game!!11!
Don't worry about me CMonkey, I was paying out the GUI in the heat of the moment, cause I needed a hint to finish the game, although I did ask for the hint, I asked for another aswell but luckily no one figured it out, so I got to do it myself.
As for the readme file, I rarely read them, so that's just my fault.
This is not a demo is it? The continuation of the game should be JAPNCA2.
Yeah that's right, it's not a demo. Originally it was going to be a demo, but it's bigger than most completed games, so i thought i'd make it part 1.
QuoteIt would be nice to have the layout of the keys be the same as that of the verbs on the screen, ie

Yeah, i originally was going to do it like that, but the small few i got to test the game said it was couldn't get it, and so i changed it to be more logical (e.g. 'o' activates 'open). I could change it for the next one, but i do want to keep it consistent. If the engine allowed command line options i could put a switch in there to allow use of that config.
But most people probably don't want to have to worry about those things when playing these games.
If i was going to do another adventure i would probably use the sierra style interface, because:
1. It's a lot less work
2. People seem to prefer it.
3. AGS seems better designed to support it.
I do like the LEC style inventory though. Maybe i could put it at the bottom of the screen, and have a sierra style GUI for general interaction. Just wanted to be different i guess.

you could use both at the same time, since neither would interfere with the other...
I loved the game - a perfect example of how a game should be made. Plus I loved the way you used the same rooms and characters for 3 chapters, thus reducing the work - many more people should follow this to make longer games with less artwork (of course their was still a large amount of arkwork). The puzzles were quite good too, pretty interesting and logical.
What I didnt like -
The main character was clikable - this made it irritating lots of time when I had to move him just to be able to open a door behind him or some such.
The interface - we all know we have to open a door and talk to a person and pick up a bone, so why have all these verbs (even the sierra ones)? Why not just have left click to act as needed for the object and right click to look? That works best in my opinion and prevents unnecessary tedium. In my game I have used that kind of interface, except the cursor changes depending on if its a character to mouth, if its a walkable area to steps and if its an object to pick. That is sort of what you want to change the right click verb. Here's my global script in repeatedly exec so you can see how it works (its a bit messy but you should get the idea) -
string hotspotname;
GetLocationName(mouse.x,mouse.y,hotspotname); // Get the name of what's under the cursor
if (GetCursorMode()==4) {} // if inventory item as cursor do nothing
else if (IsGUIOn(3)==1) SetCursorMode(1); // if on inventory window change to pointer
else if ((GetWalkableAreaAt(mouse.x,mouse.y) == 0) && (StrComp(hotspotname,"")==0) && (GetCursorMode()!=3)) SetCursorMode(3);
else if ((StrComp(hotspotname,"")==0) && (GetCursorMode()!=0) && (GetWalkableAreaAt(mouse.x,mouse.y) != 0))
SetCursorMode(0); // if blank ( or hotspot with no name )
else {
if ((GetLocationType(mouse.x,mouse.y)==2) && (GetCursorMode()!=2)) SetCursorMode(2); // if character then talk cursor
else if ((GetLocationType(mouse.x,mouse.y)==1) || (GetLocationType(mouse.x,mouse.y)==3)) SetCursorMode(1); // Change to CHANGED cursor
//else if (GetCursorMode()!=0) SetCursorMode(0); // change back to cursor
}
I finished the game last night... great job! I really liked it. It was one of the best I've played.
I don't know how valued my opinion will be, being as I'm not a game creator... I just play 'em, but I thought I'd put my two-cents in...
What I liked: I love the graphics. Some of the best I've seen with AGS. The dialgue was hillairious! And it had a fun plot.
What I didn't like: Like somebody else said, it was kind of annoying to have to move the character out of the way to click on stuff. And a personal preference
Spoiler
I don't really like puzzles where you have to click on something more than once... like with going under the house and picking up the bone. I tend to click on something once, and if it doesn't work, I move on... but that's just me. Other people probably like that!
Anyway, overall I really enjoyed your game, and I'm looking forward to the next one!
I know, making the main character clickable was probably a bad idea. It's just that when i was first creating the game i thought it would be cool if the character was able to talk to themselves. I'll probably take it out in the next games.
I thought about making my interface like that Neole, kind of like "Simon the Sourcer". But I think you lose a little of the fun of the game if you just get right down to business. I know it's more work, but i like having a lot of options. Also there is the case where you want to have more than one interaction with an object, hotspot or character. If there was a situation where you could either talk to a character or push them out a window it wouldn't be possible. Having more options gives more freedom. I'm not saying any one way is right though. I look forward to playing your game and see how your interface feels.

Wow Pestilence, i didn't think anyone would find that. I've found, that that bug doesn't happen all the time, i was trying to track down the source of it. I can't get it to happen consistently, and because you don't need it to complete the game, i left it in. I may go back and look at it, but if it causes trouble, just leave it.
Again i must say, i really appreciate all the feedback, and all the people enjoying the game. I've really gotta start the second part.

I have a habit of talking to inanimate objects and I liked getting a result other than "I don't think it will respond". I wanted to know what happened when I got the answer right, but then it yelled at me and threw me out, as if I were it's spouse and I had cheated on it.
Just finished your game, mate. Two thumbs up.
I especially like your puzzles. They're harder than average, I think, but that makes the game more fun.
The art also has quite a unique sort of style.
Looking forward to the sequel.
I didn't sleep from your game :). I really really like it.. only my PC is on my bedroom, and i have the nasty habit to "just solve one puzzle" before i go to sleep. and 3 AM is a nasty time for a student :P

Hey, haven't been able to download the game but I want bad.
I read you want help with music... I am a composer so if you want, maybe I could help. (Course I'd have to actually see the game before I wrote any music for it.)
EDIT: Okay, I got the game and it's great. Let me know if you want me to submit some music ideas to you.

use the low resolution (320x200) and the game wont crash!!! i had the same problem too. Error message said something like word too long to fit on the screen.
compliments to the developpers of the game. i enjoyed playing it... you should add a note for people to use the low res. otherwise : good work !!Ã, ;D
:-[my computer doesnt support 320x200 resolution...
Play it windowed then.
This game was fun. thanks. Was a little dissapointed, didn't turn out as people went on about it. But it is still a very good game.
I do have to say that this was a Great point and click. Very humorous in spots. Especially the ending. made me think of my own car. lmao
Wow. Bumping after two years... usually, that's Cyrus' job, isn't it?
this game is so great it should be bumped EVERY two years!
shame JAPNCA was never made :(
