Backbacon Games Proudly Presents
DARKNESS AND DENIM

Canada. 1992.
A mythological monster has begun to terrorize the residents of an ancient forest. In desperation, they turn to a stranger for help. Can he defeat the monster? Will he find enough spare change to afford gas for his truck? Will he ever change his mullet for a more modern hairstyle?

Download and find out!

Made for MAGS, October 2022. Theme: Modern-day Mythology.
Thanks to kconan for playtesting.  :cheesy:

ThreeOhFour

Finally an accurate and faithfully researched Canada 1992 simulator. Smell the smells, hear the sounds, see the sights, and most of all be delighted that Ponch is still using AGS 2.60 to make games. Glad to see you still making games buddy, and I enjoyed it!  :cheesy:

Ponch

Thanks, Ben. I've heard that there's some kind of AGS build made after 2.72, but I'm pretty sure it's just a fad (like the iPhone or Twitter). Sooner or later, everyone will wise up and come back to the last true version to be touched by CJ himself. In fact, I think I'll go post about that on my trusty MySpace page. Heck, I might even blog about it on my LiveJournal.

Thanks for playing!

kconan

  I had a blast playtesting Ponch's latest!

Be transported back in time to folksy, early 1990s Canada and take on a mythological monster of mythological proportions.

Thanks. Clearly, I'm well on my way to becoming the next ThreeOhFour.  :=

lorenzo

It looks awesome!
All I know about Canada I learned from 2034 A.C., so I can't wait to be enlightened again!

Ponch

Thanks, Lorenzo.

Now that the competition is over, I can divulge a secret. This is directly connected to 2034 AC. The main character in this game is Paige's grandfather.

It's a prequel!

2034 AC lore is getting deep!

Just played the game, I loved it! Really funny dialogues and situations, as expected from your games. I just wished it were a bit longer because I was really enjoying it.

I felt that the main character's walking speed was a bit slow, but we also get to enjoy the minimalist walking animation this way, so it's all good ;)

Also, you managed to get quite a lot of licensed music for the game :P

Anyway, very funny game, definitely recommended!

Creamy

Long time since I had my last Prairie Ponch. Just as good as I remember.

Walking too slow? Zap Rowsdower doesn't "walk," sir... he struts!  :=

The licensed music wasn't cheap!   But I had to use a cover version of The Theme From The Littlest Hobo. You wouldn't believe how much the Canadian Broadcasting Company charges for the original. But I made that animation of the dog playing the guitar, so I had to get some version of the song in the game.

Also, the game originally had another room and two more puzzles planned, but they had to get the axe. I just ran out of time. That's the curse of MAGS. But, hey, I actually finished my MAGS game for a change. That so rarely happens.

Thanks! It's always nice to finish a game.

Lastly, I just noticed that an earlier tie-in game of mine, 2034 A.C. II is suddenly on the "most popular this week" list, just behind this game. Thanks, AGS community.

Now I'm finally ready to take my Canadian history test.

Great game Ponch, I really enjoyed it! It deserves more than a MAGS win by default.

Ponch

Thanks, OneDollar. Hopefully, this game will be that crucial piece of the puzzle on your journey to becoming a Canadian citizen.  :cheesy:

Thanks also for leaving a comment on the game's page. I can only hope you voted too. Goodness knows if just a few more people would leave a vote, it might earn a player rating.

But I first need to play it through! On my first two goes, I've barely finished all the joke feedback in the first room when trying all nine verbs and every item with everything...I never knew I would get the opportunity to Outwit The Jukebox. Thanks for filling this gaping hole in my experience!

heltenjon

Okay, I played it to the end accidentally, then went back and did all the other stuff before going for the ending again. Then I educated myself about Bruce J. Mitchell, Zap Rowsdower (which I chose as my name totally by coincidence) and MST3K to understand how the game fit the theme (which it did).

The game is hilarious, from the dog, via the oilers fan to the hobo and the initial setting. Great fun!

Don't worry, I gave you votes too. I know all about not earning player ratings

Ponch

Thanks, heltenjon! I'm glad I was able to spread the gospel of Rowsdower.  :=

Thanks, OneDollar. My day is just a little brighter now.  :cheesy:

Frodo

This looks brilliant.  Need to play it.  Love the art.
Great work, Ponch.

Can I punch the wooden pole?

Ponch

Sadly, the wooden pole is un-punchable. One good hit from our hero would send it toppling over, and then you'd never be able to complete the sinister and devious "use can of gasoline on gas-powered generator" puzzle.
