That was great, I really enjoyed it extensively. A really great game which had great visuals, great immersion and a really interesting story. I just finished with one of the bad endings and can't wait to get the good one (or see the others). I'll post in the hints-thread soon.

So, congratulations, the game was really pretty much perfect except for maybe minor spelling mistakes. One of the best ones I've played. :D

You have a rare talent for game making, I've never replayed an AGS game before this one, I think I got all the endings, the -30 one, the best one, and one with 60% of trust, I may be missing a couple yet =D

Thanks Bernie, please keep making more games  ;D.

60% for me too! Seems like that's what everyone gets! You saying that can go higher? I do feel like deliberately going through the game again, but being an asshole instead!

EDIT: Oh, is this not on the AGS games section? I was going to give my feedback there.

Okay then! Apart from the measuring device, a kind of puzzle I despise in any game, this is an excellent title! I don't know why you doubted yourself! I had high expectations, and you exceeded them! Graphics and animation spot on. Music, although not yours, goes well with it (I like the music in the first section, and the terminator sounding music later on). A few minor issues with the dialogue, but only on a technical level, I enjoyed their conversations!

This goes in my top ten fave AGS games!

i got 70% trust, and i'm pretty sure i got the best ending.  ;D great game bernie. the depth-pipe-puzzle went over my head.  ;D
you should add it to the game page.   ;)

Okay, added the game to the AGS games page:

Thanks for the feedback!

ikari: I think you got most of the endings covered. :) Let's go through them....
Spoiler
Once you get to play as Matt, you can get either the worst ending or the best one. If Matt doesn't handcuff Clyde to the lantern and you lack the newspaper articles or if have lower than 50% trust, you get the indifferent ending. If you have -30 trust and enter the reactor's control room before fixing the reactor, you get the half-bad one.

I'll offically release it at my site now, too. Thanks! :D

Currently playing ... and it's WOW! ^^ The interface is perfect, the ideas really good. Keep it on!

Hi Bernie,

I noticed this game when it was in development earlier this year.  I was excited by the concept and by the obvious high quality of the screenshots you put up, and was very eager to play it.  I just got through it last night and I have to say it was even better than I was expecting!

The graphics and animation were superb - very atmospheric in the style of games like BASS, and the atmosphere was helped by the excellent, tense music.  The interface was easy to use and helped game play flow along.

Best of all was the tight plotting and the very innovative concept of having to gain the CO's trust!  You had reservations about the game's length - personally, I prefer a game to be shorter but tightly plotted, rather than huge with lots of padding and unnecessary puzzle-solving all over the place.  And the constant challenge to keep the CO on your side added to the tension and the drama, especially since it directly affected character development and the outcome of the story!

I have only two nags.  The first was with one of the puzzles, one which I'm sure you've heard a lot about ...

Spoiler

... the level measuring device!  Even though you did go out of your way to provide a diagram and in-game hints, this puzzle was very frustrating for a few reasons.  Firstly, it was perhaps too complex - there was an awful lot of information to take in all at once and a lot of it was quite technical.  Secondly, even with the diagram you provided, it was hard to visualise the 3D X-Y-Z axis when fiddling with those 2D sliders.  Thirdly, it wasn't entirely clear what was meant by the "deepest point" of the pipe - I thought that referred to the exact centre of the pipe, but apparently it referred also to the lowest point on the Y-axis within the pipe (which is confusing because "Z" is depth and "Y" is height).

My second nag is that the right-mouse-click used to skip through speech faster was not kept constant.  During actual gameplay it didn't work, and during cutscenes it skipped through the cutscene altogether.  Because I'm a fast reader, I often found myself accidentally skipping through important scenes and having to restore to a saved game to watch the scene properly.

Anyway, those are just two minor nags in what was an exceptionally excellent game!  You mustn't undersell yourself - you are clearly very talented and able to produce high quality stuff!  It was a pleasure to play the game.

If you ever need any help with English, just let me know, man. Native speaker, student of English Language, I think I've got the credentials, and definitely the willingness to help :)

I'll try the game out once I'm back home - can't play it at work, where I currently happen to be  >:(

Took me a few tries, but I finally got the good ending. Very cool!

One of the best AGS games in my opinion. Very original and atmospheric.

Marion

Just finished it. Very, very good game ! Looks very professionnal.
Very good work, congratulations ! :)
Unfortunately I had the bad ending.

I believe I said all along that I was sure that this game would be of the highest quality!!! Thank you Bernie for making my words true......

Bernie, this game is excellent! I enjoyed every bit of it. And everything fit well, (most important) the story, sound and graphics.

Bernie

Sheepisher: Thanks for the feedback! You're right, the level measuring device puzzle *is* mean. :D About the right-click: You can also do away with the text using the left button, so I thought it would be alright.

voh: ProgZmax already edited the dialogs. The updated version is now downloadable. Thanks for the offer, still! :D

Something's still slightly weird with the dialog update as some of ProgZmax' lines refuse to show up. I'm trying to resolve this at the moment.

Marion, sthomannch, nihilyst & thewalrus: Thanks for the kind words! :D

thewalrus

No, thank YOU, Bernie! For the great game!!! I hope all this positive feedback has assured you that this game is awesome and that you did the right thing by releasing it. (I'm not sure why you ever had any doubts) I hope to see more games by you in the future!!!

The offer wasn't just for this game, so if you ever need help before a release or something, for someone to go over your dialogue, I'm available :)

Anyway, downloading now. Got some nice games I'm about to try out (5 new AGS games! Whoo! Wonder how many will end up in the quality games folder ;))

edit: And the verdict is in!

This is your best work yet. It's dark, but in a good way. It's... I don't know how to say it, but it's as close to Beneath a Steel Sky as any game's ever gotten, and that just so happens to be one of my most favourite games ever. Be proud of it, Bernie, you've made a classic :)

I usually stick to comedy games, and prefer comedy over mystery allmost everytime - but when reading the AG announcement, the thought of a game  with a trust meter really got me interested ... I had yet to play a game with multiple endings determined by the way you treated your sidekick.

I was on the edge of my seat all the way through, I so loved the story .. allthough personally I would have liked it to last a little longer, it was so good. But what are you gonna do, this was great, can't complain on a little factor like that when the entire game rocked!

I laughed, I didn't cry .. but I was worried when I though my character was going to die when the oxygen meter kept beeping, I was frustrated with the laser measuing thing - but oh what a great sence of accomplishment when that sodding light finally stopped blinking  ;D

I hear you like making humor games .. I like playing them, so if you can incorporate some of the suspence and trill of this game combined with some of the humor of the other adventure game you made you've got a winner!

Thanks man ... I expressed my joy of the game in the email, but this makes it official  ;)

I finished this game last night. Nice work! I got the neutral ending and now I'm trying to figure out how to get the good ending. I wish you would have included a soundtrack listing besides "various places on the Internet." I'd like to see what some of the tracks were.

I'll put myself in the minority here and say that I liked the puzzle with the level-measuring device. It was tricky enough to make me think about it, and the solution was completely logical. I was a little confused about where to calibrate it, but once I figured it out it made sense. I think part of the problem might have been with your english?
Spoiler
Instead of saying the "deepest point" in the pipe, it might have been better to say the "bottom" of the pipe. Also, it might have helped if the water at the top of the pipe was little less dense (say .995 or something) than the bottom of the pipe (say 1.002). That might help the player zero in on the correct point. At first I was trying to calibrate across the diameter of the pipe, and I was a bit confused when I got a density of 1.002 and the device still wasn't working.

Anyway, congratulations on a really excellent game. I hope to see more in the future!

Edit: just finished the happy ending!

It's not very happy, is it! Galivan was better off in prison!

It was definitely worth going back to unlock it. Well done!

Thanks again for a great game!

Very rarely am I glad I played a game.  Most of the time I will enjoy a game while playing it, but afterwards I realize it wouldn't matter to me if I didn't spend that time on the game (or, I would have preferred if I didn't spend my time on that game).  This game is one of those rare games I am glad I have played.  Good job.

Bernie

voh: Thanks, I'll keep that in mind!

Are you certain you got the GOOD good ending? ;) If Clyde died, there's a chance you my have missed something.

I know that some of the music is from flashback. I have a folder full of random MOD files, so it's hard to tell where they're from sometimes.

Jaws:

It'll totally depend on the game. Such a thing wouldn't fit all stories or settings, I think. ;)

Thanks for playing my game!

Just don't be so unsure about one of your games in the future - you did something different this time, and it worked out extremely well. One thing you should try to avoid doing is to create something and then keep it from the world because you're afraid there's something wrong with it - there's always going to be people who enjoy it :)
