Title: A couple of sketches (HUGE images)
Post by: Akatosh on Tue 22/07/2008 17:17:44
Following some ancient advice by InCreator (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?action=profile;u=820), I've tried to make a few sketches in Flash, using only (well... mainly) the freehand pencil.

A redo of the splash screen of Cheerful Science's intro.

The characters from the same game.

Uh... yeah... I got nothing.

So... any comments? Worth continuing this way, or is it back to MSPaint?

I like it, it's much smoother than the paint-style, so my advice is: go on with it.

Just try to improve the outlines, so there's no sudden "bump" or corner in it.

I've always liked your style before, but I think you may have made it better! I'd like to see you use the flash version at least in one game.

Nice bubbly hands for the evil german fella.

I know with your style, you usually don't put bubble hands on your characters.. but YOU SHOULD! :P hehe

I think you totally got it!

It's just like I imagined when I suggested flash.
(let's use "hello, i'm a newbie" smiley here:  ;D)

Nice!
No way back now!

Paint style had it's own advantages, to be honest. I suggest to either keep sprites small - so they look cute, or start lea(r)ning towards second (skin) shade.

EDIT: Also, mouths rock. Use mouths. Draw mouths. The weirder, the funnier.
"Worms!"-style hands are pretty cool too.

Oh no!

I'm seeing coming a new wave of Akatosh easygraphic games!!! xD

No, the style seems improved, but is need to be how fit this in a 680x640 resolution as much... 'cause in 320x240 the outlines could be very Biig.

Mmm, have you thinked to use the floating hands in the walkcycle, as many flash games? It could be cool

Correction, 640x480 and 320x200.

BTW, how do these images count as huge? Does most of the people here run there computere solution at 640x480?

I kid though. haha Looks great Akatosh. Too bad there is no vector engine within AGS. It'd be great to be able to create a totally flexible game using vector game assets outside of flash. :D Vector is the future!

Misspelling :P

Of course I was talking 'bout use flash made graphics (with this free hand tool) to make characters to AGS.... Why I say that in 320x240 there is no much space to fuzzy outlines...

Alright... first of all, thanks for the replies and the encouragement, everybody. You've made an inept artist very happy.  ;)
Now, for the detail...

The small bumps and changing sizes are sort of intentional (I used the freehand tool for a reason, mind you!) but I'll see about the corners.

Thanks! Chances are I will.  :)

First of all, whee, I got something right!  ;)

The sprites themselves haven't really changed in size, apart from the full-screen cutscene thingmabobs, so don't worry. I'll see what I can do about hands, mouths, and shading.

More bubbly hands it is, then.

Akatosh.EasyGraphicsâ,,¢, please.  ;)

Anyway. Don't worry, I've been using 640x400 (or 640x480) since I my first AGS game, and I'm not planning to change it. As stated before, I'll look into using the bubbly hands, but I'm not quite sure where to put them in the walkcycle.

Thanks for the encouragement, and yeah, vector graphics are pretty goddamn awesome. About the images... well, they're not exactly small, and I've suffered massive brain damage during the years I was stuck with 56K, which means I'm always overestimating loading times now.  :P

Again, thanks for the kind (and quick!) replies and the encouragement. It's definitly Flash from now on.   :)

I shall miss the good old MS Paint graphics, but who am I to stand in the way of artistic development?

Anyway, I can always just go play Me Go Store! again.

Hooray, so cute! I really want to see those two make it into a game.
