Title: An attempt at tracing...
Post by: Rincewind on Tue 01/07/2003 11:02:30
Ok, I haven't really tried to do any tracing over photos before, but I sat down a couple of days ago and started doing this:

Now, I'm fairly pleased, but I need some tips - What could be improved? Shading, etc... And yes, I want her to have that skin colour... Hehe...
(Any comments regarding her similarities to Synthetiques alien I deny completely... ;D)

Any comments are welcome...

I love this style of art ... I did a LOT of tracing a few years back when I got my first Wacom tablet.  If I could remember the link ...

The only suggestion I would make (and this is 'cause it's what I did) was the I avoided doing more than two colors in one area.  Which you've done everywhere but with the hair shine ... you've got two colors blending into the black.  It jumped right out at me.  So my suggestion would be to either minimize the hair sheen to 1 color, or use 1 more level of shading on the rest of the pic.

This is just my thought ... but what do I know???   ;D

i don't think there's anything at all wrong with the shading, it gives it a minimalist look, which is nice, the only thing i'm not really keen on are that white kinda grey shiny bit in her hair, it's looks as if there's more colours there than there is on the rest of the pic, the nose is kinda strange too, and the right eye looks as if she's been drawn as her eyelashes are falling off, all at the same time...
besides that it's a pretty fantastic image!

Darth-Mandarb:
Hey, I'm glad you like the style. I know that the shine on the hair looks odd, but I had no real idea on how to convert the look of it from the photo to the picture.
Basically I should just reduce the colours, right?
(Or I could make another layer of shading on the rest of the picture, as you said. I'll see what turns out the best.) Thank you very much for commenting!

Boyd:
Ok - What's wrong with the nose? Too big? Disoriented?
The eyelashes was also a pain to do - Can't seem to get them right. They look terribly blurred in the original.
And thanks for commenting!

I was thinking something like this:
(please forgive the crudity ... I did this in like 2 minutes!!)

Just using one color to do the shine would fit in with the rest of the style (which I totally dig)

Hope that helps  8)

Okeydokey - Changed the hair and her eyes. Looks a bit better, I think.

Thanks, both of you! ;D
Never heard of Jet Set Radio, though. Something worth checking out?

Great, that. Very.

But the nose does, in my opinion, look strange. The reason is probably the complete lack of shading around it. If anything in a face casts a shadow, it's usually the nose. And you'd need lights all around her to make it this shadowless. Shade the nose and it'll look great.

Greater, I mean.

Some shading on the side of her head (above and around the ear) would also do good... the hair would probably affect the lightning more than it does here.

Hey, thanks for the useful tips! I'll try and see if my shading will improve it... ;D

Slamgrinder:
Heh, cool. Is it an old game or pretty recent?

No, I didn't think that you drew the picture, I just thought it was nice. ;D
Yeah, I'd love to see them - PM me.

Neole:
Thanks! Glad you think so.

And, to enhance your surfing even more, here's a new update on the picture. Not sure if there's much improvement, but at least it's something...

Here's I with some constructive criticisim. :P

Shading is still pretty strange, I think. The area between the nose and the mouth is (well, in a normal human face) not straight; there's some sort of horizontal 'fold', which would cause the shadows to fall differently. Also, somewhere between the mouth and the chin there usually is a horizontal shadow-shape... which isn't there.

But ignore these pointers. It's pointless to try and calculate how shadows should fall when there's a real world to look at--get a mirror and a lamp and position yourself like in the picture. Then look. You'll see where the shadows are. (Slightly easier if you kind of 'blur' your eyes... by squinting, or such.) This picture would in my opinion be best with very little shadows, but those which are there should be effective.

Enough critique, though; all in all, this is a great picture. :)

Hey, thanks for the tips - Shading is hard when using pen and paper, and doing it with a mouse on a computer isn't making it easier...
But I appreciate you taking the time to try and help me! Thanks a lot!
