This animation isnt turning out right. Its a top view of a bat flying.

I need suggestions or repaints to make it look more like its flying.

Eggie

Well. the wings look more like the're retracting than flapping.
I know it's hard in low res. But try a little perspective to show the wings re going up and down.

Moox

The games other artwork is entirely vertical so i cant use prespective in it really

Darth Mandarb

I didn't think yours was all that bad ...

But I did a little tweak:

My attempt (500%):

and the frames, if you want 'em
I know what you're thinking ... Don't think that.

Moox

I never thought about curling the wings, thank you both.

This is what I just came up with, I am thinking about changing the 3rd frame a bit

I'm not 100% sure ... but I think the body should stay stationary in relation to the wings' movements.

Although, your newest attempt looks a lot like those bats you'd see in 1950's campy horror movies with the 'herky-jerky' motion like that.Ã,  It really gives a 'batty' impression :)

I can almost see the strings ....

Ashen

I think there would be a bit of movement to the body (e.g. when the wings start to pull back), but a lot less than there is now. However, I think it'd be difficult to include it, and make it look smooth, in a sprite this size. It probably wouldn't be needed in-game, if the character is going to be moving about anyway.
Also, the way it bobs at the moment makes it look more like a front view than a top view, to me at least. Looking good, though, is it for that RPG you were working on a while ago?

Andail

Darth, how un-scientific of you! In order for the body to stay stationary, its mass would have to be infinite!

Seriously though; there is still too little movement in the wings. As far as I know, a pair of wings move up and down, I'd say their tips almost touch eachother in the "bottom" of their movement.

I don't know if you're trying to preserve the height of the sprite or something, or why you all persist in giving the bat such a subtle, almost non-existing flapping.

Gosh, I'm harsh today :)

Moox

I dont want to take up to much space with the animation, as I want the character within attacking distance

Removed the diamond in frame 3

Better version of above:

Evil

The wing movement look something more like this shitty ASCII frame drawing.

Why don't people read the posts? Argh.

TOP view. You explained about the front view.

Anyway, HUGE improvement. I really like the new version.

Andail

hehe, I made the same mistake as Evil.

Well anyway, there could still be some more motion to the animation.
I made this very quick attempt:

It's not based on your original sprite, but I just wanted to illustrate my point

i think one of the problems here is that theres simply too many frames. Bats beat their wings quickly which means you cant really see the transition from up to down on the wings.

Andail

My animation has a delay, so that you could easier see the frames. It's actually much faster without the delay.
Ah well, it's not like a fantastic animation either way, but I think it still defines the actual movement in the wings.
