This one I made today after a slight wave of inspiration... Ii is supposed to represent an old man with a pain in his back, well not maybe that much pain,Ã,  leaning to a stick.
I'm rather content with him, but the hemline of his robe keeps bugging me... something could probably be done better?!?!?

hmm... well, this one might not turn up into my game later on, but all practise is good practise :) (hope the links will work)

Paper Carnival

he looks good, but you just gotta take care of the outlines.

Tuomas

ehm, do you mean the details should stand out more? Well that came to my mind also, would naturally help animating the fellow:) thanks for the showing pictures by the way... ones a noob, always a noob ;D

As you see, I tried to use the diameter on the side by deviding the physicality of the character into 8 pieces as a human naturally is. only that this guys bearing is a bit down... As hmmm... the stick wasn't supposed to be all black, forgot to add the greyish right side...

Paper Carnival

I meant something like this:

I edited the outlines a little bit. You might not like some of the edit, but you do have to get rid of that pixel sticking out with no reason :)

I think he looks just fine, but if you want to improve him then maybe add details on his face and change the beard.

And now you mention it, maybe the details could stand out a bit more

Also if you want to display pics, use this:
[*img]image_url_here[/img] without the asterisk
or
[*img width=999 height=999]image_url_here[/img] without the asterisk, to display the picture on a different size

edit: why is it that when I save to png from paint, the colors become a bit darker? ??? Thankfully, in this case I think it looks better :P

Tuomas

I did a few changes. Made him a bit more noticable, tried to make the a bit more diversity on the beard, and added depth to his expression. (or tried)

I'm a bit troubled by the beard still... it's hard to draw hair with so big pixels you know ;)

Here's a Sprite Jam entry by big brother, maybe it helps:

Lionheart

how does big  brother make sprites so life like, and detailed!

wow!

Tuomas

Came to my mind as a flash that I could use my own beard as a model, but there's a one problem: it's mostly still just white fur and dark hair here and there:D

But I get the point in big brothers pic. He's got a bit bigger res than I, but I think  I could manege up to something more convincing

Tuomas

Ah, so here! I took the liberty to be a bit plagiative, in limits of course:D Can't beat him with this, but it surely looks better to me now, what do you think. Oh, and along with the beard, I also edited the robe too, it has now A LOT of different shades of brown:P

an honest opinion please:D

Lionheart

Hmm is he supposed to have a mouth, or is it supposed to be cartoon like?

other then that i think it looks good..

Although the nose reminds me of one of the Seven Dwarfs, and the stick is hard to see unless you stare at it for a while, maybe give the stick more detail?

Tuomas

THe stick... ok, thanks... got some really good advice here... and yes, it is supposed to be like one of the dwarwes:D the mouth is inside/ behind the beard, so it is not to be seen anyhow... This was supposed to be something in the between, mostly cartoonlike yes...

IMO, the problem with the stick, as it stands, is that...well, if you hadn't mentioned it was a stick, I would have thought it was just the seam of his robe.

I think maybe extending the stick another pixel or two downward would set it off better as a separate object from the robe.Ã,  (It should logically be in front of his feet and the hem of the robe anyway.)

That is what I thought. I think you should make the stick a bit longer, and have him with his hands on top of the stick, leaning on it, rather than holding it from the middle part.
Here is an idea. It's not the same thing, I had made it earlier on, but it illustrates what I am talking about. It might even look nice if you leaned your old guy's hands AND head on the stick:

I made an edit, but somehow it was ruined...Clean up the jagged pixels and shading and your version should be fine.

Tuomas

Well now there ought to be no doubt it's a stick... and as he's no longer leaning, I fixed up his bearing...

ProgZmax, by jagged pixels you mean...?

There are blocky sections of the sprite on the arms that look jagged.
