Hy there. I'm working on a game where you play a vice cop in 80's Miami. This is the cop:

Ã,

Now, I can't do backgrounds because my style doesn't realy match the characters style, so I'm looking for someone to work on the backgrounds for me. Can anyone help me?

This isn't the forum to ask for people to make art for you...

however why don't you post a background and we'll offer help as to how you can unify the styles?

Ok here is the cop's room:

Ã,

Now, what can I do to unify the styles?

Okay, I am far from a pro at drawing but there are some obvious problems with the BG. First of all, I think every thing looks out of perportion. The cabinet is way too small, the door is way too big, and the table is not the right size compared to the cabinet or the door. Also, I think your sprite is much more detailed while the bg is lacking detail. Also you have a lot of shading in your sprite and like no shading in the room. So you would have a problem blending the two right there...... Just some pretty obvious observations.....

And what is that black and grey thing supposed to be?

For some reason, I assumed that it was the door......

Keep the room that size, and just make everything else bigger... the door should only be a few foot away from the ceiling and the wardrobe would probably be about the same height as that... and the bed would probably be about the same length as those and then you should be able to get an idea of the size of the table and its various items from there.

As long as there is room for the sprite to move around then theres nothing wrong with filling up the spaces.

Dualnames

Well, although it is in a wronf forum if you are interested in making backgrounds PM me.
Worked on Strangeland, Primordia, Hob's Barrow, The Cat Lady, Mage's Initiation, Until I Have You, Downfall, Hunie Pop, and every game in the Wadjet Eye Games catalogue (porting)

Da_Elf

the other thing i would do withthat room is more along the lines of composition, you should cut off the top half of that room. with the proportions im seeing there i can imagine the character size and honestly the top half is just wasted pixels. you could have a side scroller room with the resulting rectangle image

Chicky

simple answer my friend, change resolution.

here's your bg (640x400 looking empty)

and here's the same bg, rearranged and in a different resolution (320x240)

See how it looks a lot more interesting and busy, all i did was change the resolution and add some foreground objects.

*edit, seems my version is a little over 240 in height but you can still see my point.

Big Nerd

I completely re-done the bg and here is the result.

Ã,

I am really happy with the resultÃ,  but I now its not perfect, so, how can I improve it now?

Neil Dnuma

It's a clear improvement, but like Chicky said, you should really look into reducing the resolution for your game. There are too many big empty spaces.

Some quick ideas:

There are plenty of threads on simple, one-point perspective use, read some of those ;) I halfway fixed the bed and right nightstand. The sofa should be bigger, but this perspective-cheat is acceptable if you don't want to scale the character too much.
Added some quick shading. This is the evening/nighttime version, but how should I know what time it is. Maybe some windows would be a good addition.
Try working with less saturated colors. Much better on the eye.

Also, don't forget. if this is to be used in a game dont forget that pick-uppable objects can't be part of the background, becasue they have to be able to disappear when your character picks them up.

Looks very nice! I agree, make the resolution smaller and take away the extra space.

Works better with the second version, but still too boring, too lined up.  Make the tv/couch deal not be aligned with the room.   Maybe make a half circle couch instead, and have it off slightly to the side.  Looks like a crappy apartment to me :p  And I know, that in crappy apartments, the floors never look that nice!

I dunno, good look with it though!
