Title: Gah, damn cotage not being like I want it to
Post by: Haddas on Sun 08/05/2005 01:33:42
I think the title explains it all. The darn cottage is messing with my flow. I've tried re-drawing it multiple times, although to no success. If only that was the only problem. I want the clouds to look good, yet minimalistic, and I want the grass to be detailed, yet not. Many more overall improvements and suggestions needed...

It's pretty nice, in my opinion.
The clouds could use some more shading.
Maybe add some shading to the tree to suggest the shape of some leaves.

Also, the cottage creates some sort of inconsistency, as the roof/door/window colour is quite saturated, as opposed to the rest of the picture.

I agree with Al_Ninio that the hut colors are off. You could try using lighter colors for the walls and less saturated colors for the wood. The other problem in my opinion is the perspective. I tried creating a quick-and-dirty mockup of the correct perspective and marked the colliding perspective lines in your original picture. I don't know if it helps, but take a look:

My perspective drawing is not entirely correct (I din't actually use vanishing points, just approximated them), but you get the picture.  ;)   Try to change the perspecitve on the door, the windows and the patio roof, that will help a lot.

Hope this helps.

Looks pretty good for a rough blocking out of the scene.  does it look like a finished bg?  no

That would actually depend on the theme of the game it's being used for.  It looks like it would fit in nicely with something cartoony.

i'm actually trying out different styles. I don't have the patince to make a full game, unless it has really bad graphics. I am, however making a game with totally different graphics. If you search for topics I've started in the critics lounge, you'll see none of the graphis look the same. It's all totally different... In my opinion. I see a style Ilike and try to imitate it, or I just try to make something of my own. Never ever completed a game though.
